The 1949 South American Championship was the 21st edition of the Copa América, the main national team football competition in South America. It was held in, and won by, Brazil. Paraguay finished as runner-up while Argentina withdrew from the tournament.

Hosted and organized by Chilean club Colo Colo with the aid of then president of CONMEBOL Luis Valenzuela, it was played between February 11 and March 17. Brazil's Vasco da Gama won the competition after earning the most points in the round-robin tournament.

The 2007 South American Championships in Athletics were held at the Estádio Ícaro de Castro Mello in São Paulo, Brazil from 7 June to 9 June 2007. A total of 44 events were contested, of which 22 were by male and 22 by female athletes. Continuing in their traditional dominant role, the hosts Brazil easily topped both the medal and points tables, having won 28 gold medals and 61 medals in total. The next best team was Colombia who had a haul of seven golds and 26 overall, while Argentina took third with 13 medals of which 4 were gold.

Unofficial South American Championships in Athletics were held on 19–26 April 1953, at Chile's national stadium, Estadio Nacional in the capital, Santiago.
