The 1979 edition of the Copa América soccer tournament was played between July 18 and December 12. This time, the continental champion would not go to the FIFA World Cup. It was not held in a particular country, all matches were played on a home and away basis. Defending champions Peru were given a bye into the semi-finals.

South American Championship of Champions

The South American Championship of Champions was a football competition played in Santiago, Chile in 1948 and the first continental-wide football tournament in South America. Hosted and organized by Chilean club Colo-Colo, with the aid of then Conmebol president Luis Valenzuela, it was played between February 11 and March 17. Vasco da Gama won the competition after earning the most points in the round-robin tournament.

The unofficial South American Championships in Athletics were held in the Chilean capital, Santiago, during April 1946. The event, entitled "II Campeonato Sudamericano Extraordinario Barón Pierre de Coubertin", was held in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games.

2010 South American Youth Championships in Athletics

The 20th South American Youth Championships in Athletics were held in Santiago, Chile at the Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos from October 9–10, 2010. A detailed report on the results was given.

The Uruguayan Clásico is the most important rivalry in Uruguayan football and one of the best on the American continent. It is contested between the two most popular football clubs in Uruguay, Club Nacional de Football and Club Atlético Peñarol, both based in Montevideo. As of 2018, the two teams have won 96 of the 115 Uruguayan Primera División titles, and many international tournaments, including a combined eight Copa Libertadores. The first meeting between the two teams was at the turn of the century in 1900, making it one of the oldest football rivalries outside Great Britain. CURCC won the first match 2–0.

The second stage of the 2013 Copa Libertadores de América was played from February 12 to April 18, 2013. A total of 32 teams competed in the second stage.

2007 South American Cross Country Championships

The 2007 South American Cross Country Championships took place on February 25, 2007. The races were held at the Centro de Treinamento da Marinha in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A detailed report of the event was given for the IAAF.

2015 South American U-15 Championship

The 2015 South American Under-15 Football Championship was the 7th edition of the South American Under-15 Football Championship, the biennial international youth football championship organised by the CONMEBOL for the men's under-15 national teams of South America. The tournament was held in the cities of Montería and Valledupar, Colombia between 21 November and 6 December 2015.

2017 South American U-17 Championship

The 2017 South American Under-17 Football Championship was the 17th edition of the South American Under-17 Football Championship, a football competition for the under-17 national teams in South America organized by CONMEBOL. It was held in Chile from 23 February to 19 March 2017.

2020 Copa Sudamericana

The 2020 Copa CONMEBOL Sudamericana is the 19th edition of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana, South America's secondary club football tournament organized by CONMEBOL.

The 2019 South American U-17 Championship was the 18th edition of the South American U-17 Championship, the biennial international youth football championship organised by CONMEBOL for the men's under-17 national teams of South America. It was held in Peru from 21 March to 14 April 2019.

The 1949 South American Championship Final was the final match to determine the South American Cup champion. It was held on May 11, 1949, in Estádio São Januário of Rio de Janeiro.

The 2019 South American Under-15 Football Championship was the 9th edition of the South American Under-15 Football Championship, the biennial international youth football championship organised by the CONMEBOL for the men's under-15 national teams of South America. The tournament was originally to be held in Bolivia between 23 November and 8 December 2019. However, on 8 November 2019, CONMEBOL announced the tournament would be moved to Paraguay due to the 2019 Bolivian protests.

The Cinema Rian was a theatre in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil founded by artist and former first lady of Brazil Nair de Tefé in November 1932. The theatre was located in a well-to-do area on the Avenida Atlântica, Copacabana, facing the Atlantic Ocean. The theatre was considered one of the best-known in Rio de Janeiro before its demolition in 1983.
