In 2017, deputies of the Slovak National Council voted to extend the term of governors from 4 years to 5 years, and change from a 2-round election to only 1 round. [2]
The turnout was around 30%, biggest in the history of Slovak regional elections.

The Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, later known as the People's Party – Movement for a Democratic Slovakia, was a populist political party in Slovakia. The party is commonly considered as having been authoritarian and illiberal.
Marian Kotleba is a Slovak politician and leader of the far-right, neo-Nazi political party Kotlebists – People's Party Our Slovakia.
Parliamentary elections were held in Slovakia on 5 March 2016 to elect the 150 members of the National Council. The ruling left-wing populist Direction – Social Democracy (SMER–SD) party remained the strongest party, but lost its majority. The Slovak Democratic and Christian Union – Democratic Party (SDKÚ-DS), which led the government between 2000–06 and 2010–12, was defeated heavily, failing to cross the electoral threshold and losing its representation in the National Council. The centre-right Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) also failed to cross the threshold for the first time since 1990, whilst the far-right nationalist Kotleba – People's Party Our Slovakia (ĽSNS) entered parliament for the first time.

Jaroslav Baška is a Slovak politician. Baška has served as a member of the National Council in the Direction – Slovak Social Democracy caucus since 2002. In addition, he has been the governor of Trenčín Region since 2013. In 2008-2010, he served as the Minister of Defense.
Vladimír Ledecký, M.Sc. is a Slovak politician, member of the National Council of the Slovak Republic and former state secretary at the Ministry of Investments, Regional Development and Informatization of the Slovak Republic. He was a member of the presidency of the ZA ĽUDÍ party, where he acted as a guarantor for regional development. From 1998 to 2020 he was the mayor of Spišský Hrhov, from 2005 to 2022 he also served as a deputy of the Prešov self-governing region. He is currently a member of the SaS parliamentary club.

Milan Majerský is a Slovak politician. He has served as the Governor of the Prešov Region since 2017, the chairman of the Christian Democratic Movement since 2020 and a Member of the National Council of Slovakia since 2023. He previously served as mayor of Levoča from 2014 to 2017.
Martina Holečková is a Slovak politician. Since 2023 she has served as a Member of the National Council of Slovakia.
