The 2023 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival or simply EYOF 2023, also known as Maribor 2023, was the 17th edition of the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival, held from 23 to 29 July 2023 in Maribor, Slovenia. The festival was originally supposed to take place in Koper, Slovenia. [4] In June 2021, Maribor was announced as the new host city after Koper withdrew its candidacy. [5]

Participating nations

48 countries and one independent athlete participated in the event. [8] [9] As a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Olympic Committees has taken a decision to not invite athletes from Russia and Belarus to the European Youth Summer Olympic Festival.

The stadium was originally the home of several other football teams based in Maribor, including Rapid and Branik. A prominent feature of the stadium is the main grandstand with a concrete arch, which is protected by the Institute for the Protection of Cultural Heritage of Slovenia as an architectural and historical landmark.

Rokometni klub Maribor Branik, commonly referred to as RK Maribor Branik or simply Branik, is a handball club from Maribor, Slovenia. As of the 2024–25 season, the club competes in the Slovenian Second Handball League, the third tier of Slovenian handball. They play their home games at Tabor Hall, a 3,261 capacity multi-purpose sports venue in Maribor. Between 2004 and 2010, the team was known as RK Klima Petek Maribor due to sponsorship reasons. Nogometni klub Maribor is a Slovenian professional association football club based in Maribor. It was founded in December 1960 by officials and players of NK Branik Maribor. The 2012–2013 Slovenian protests were a series of anti-establishment and anti-government protests. Protesters expressed disapproval with the country's ruling political elite, including Maribor mayor Franc Kangler, prime minister Janez Janša, and parliamentary opposition leader Zoran Janković.

The 2017–18 season was the 58th season in the history of Nogometni klub Maribor. It began on 1 June 2017 and concluded on 31 May 2018, with competitive matches played between July and May. It was the first season since 2007–08 in which Maribor did not win a single trophy during the season as the team lost the league title to Olimpija Ljubljana due to worse head-to-head record after finishing with the same number of points (80) in 36 rounds. Olimpija also eliminated Maribor in the quarter-finals of the Slovenian Cup. However, Maribor fared better in European competitions as the team reached the group stages of the UEFA Champions League for the third time in club's history.

The 2018–19 Slovenian Football Cup was the 28th edition of the football knockout competition in Slovenia. The winners of the cup earned a place in the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League first qualifying round. The tournament began on 14 August 2018 and ended on 30 May 2019 with the final.

The 2020–21 Slovenian PrvaLiga was the 30th edition of the Slovenian PrvaLiga since its establishment in 1991. The season began on 22 August 2020 and ended on 22 May 2021.

The Judo event at the 2023 European Youth Summer Olympic Festival was held at the Lukna Hall arena in Maribor, Slovenia, from 25 to 29 July 2023. An NOC could have been represented by up to 12 athletes, given that no more than 1 of them participates in any weight class. The final day of competition featured a mixed team event, won by team Turkey.
