The 2023 Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team represented Rutgers University in the East Division of the Big Ten Conference during the 2023 NCAA Division I FBS football season. The Scarlet Knights were led by Greg Schiano in the fourth year of his second stint (15th overall season) as Rutgers' head coach. This was Rutgers first winning season since 2014.

Coaching changes

On October 9, 2022, offensive coordinator Sean Gleeson was fired in the middle of the 2022 season. [1] On January 7, 2023, Minnesota offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca was hired to replace Gleeson. [2] This is Ciarrocca's second stint at Rutgers, having served as a co-offensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010. [3] [4]

Andrew Aurich transitioned from running backs coach to tight ends coach. [5]

Flood was named the 29th head football coach of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights football team after Greg Schiano accepted the National Football League head coaching position for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is the first Rutgers football head coach to be promoted from assistant since the 1973 season. Flood is a graduate of Iona College and earned four varsity letters for the Gaels between 1989 and 1992.

John McNulty is an American football coach who currently serves as an analyst for Alabama. He is a former player and graduate of the Penn State University. McNulty returned to Rutgers, where he spent five seasons as an assistant coach and offensive coordinator from 2004 to 2008. The veteran coach also spent 15 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), coaching for six different teams.

This was the second season with Kyle Flood as the head coach, and last season before transitioning to playing in the Big Ten Conference. They finished the season 6–7, 3–5 in American Athletic play to finish in a tie for sixth place. They were invited to the Pinstripe Bowl where they were defeated by Notre Dame. Burns, the Scarlet Knights compiled a 9–3 record while competing as an independent. The team outscored its opponents 284 to 165 and finished the season with a 34–18 loss to Arizona State in the Garden State Bowl. The team's statistical leaders included Bob Hering with 1,193 passing yards, Glen Kehler with 883 rushing yards, and David Dorn with 535 receiving yards. It was the Scarlet Knights' first major bowl appearance.

They were led by fourth-year head coach Chris Ash. On September 29, 2019, Ash was fired after 313 seasons as head coach. He posted an overall record of 8–32 and 3–26 in Big Ten play. Nunzio Campanile was their interim head coach for the remainder of the season. They finished the season 2–10, 0–9 in Big Ten play to finish in last place in the East Division.

He also served as the interim head coach at Syracuse in 2023 following the firing of head coach Dino Babers, then remained on the Orange staff after Fran Brown was hired.

Kirk Ciarrocca is an American college football coach. He is the offensive coordinator at Rutgers University. He has previously served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota and Penn State University.
