2 States is the soundtrack to the 2014 film of the same name directed by Abhishek Varman based on Chetan Bhagat's novel 2 States: The Story of My Marriage . Starring Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, the film produced by Dharma Productions and Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment. The film's soundtrack consisted of seven songs composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, who had recurringly composed for Dharma Productions' films, and had lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. Varman wanted the trio to score the film in the first place in order to create a romantic album that "has soul and young energy" and have a longer shelf-life. [1]

Contents

The soundtrack was released by T-Series on 16 March 2014 to generally positive reviews from critics. Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy won Filmfare and IIFA awards for his work in the film, while the album itself received accolades in several ceremonies. The song "Mast Magan" enjoyed widespread commercial success, with other tracks being declared as chartbusters.

Release

2 States' soundtrack was preceded by three singles, that were released along with the music videos accompanying. The track "Offo" was sung by Aditi Singh Sharma and Amitabh Bhattacharya, was the first to be released on 7 March 2014. [2] [3] The second song "Locha-E-Ulfat" was released on 13 March, [4] [5] and the third song "Mast Magan" was released on 15 March, while its music video was released later. [6] [7] In an interview with Bollywood Hungama , the leading lady of the film Alia Bhatt stated that the song is one of her personal favorites from the film. [8] The soundtrack was released through digital platforms on 16 March 2014. [9] Post-release, the tracks "Iski Uski" and "Chandaaniya" were released on 3 and 9 April. [10] [11]

Reception

Vipin Nair of Music Aloud gave 7.5 out of 10 stars calling it "not as brilliant as Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s last few soundtracks, but still one of the better works they have produced for Dharma Productions." [12] In her 3-star review, Purva Khole of Bollywood Life wrote "Though this album isn’t one of the best ones by Shankar Ehsaan Loy, it is a relief to see the trio back in action". [13] Aishwarya of Koimoi rated 3.5 out of 5 saying "If the past few releases did not stand up to your expectations in Hindi Film music, this is worth the try to bring a fanatic’s faith back on. For once, the entire album can be judged without selective prejudice." [14]

Joginder Tuteja of Rediff.com wrote "Last year, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy had done quite well with Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. With the score of 2 States, they make a re-entry into the Karan-Sajid camp. Amitabh Bhattacharya has written some interesting lyrics. With aggressive promotion and its inherent good quality, the music of 2 States should do well." [15] In a mixed review, Sankhayan Ghosh of The Indian Express rated two-and-a-half out of five saying "While this (Hulla) and Locha-e-Ulfat will sit atop any favourite list this year, the remaining songs of 2 States have their moments but still fall short of the composers’ talent." [16] Rajiv Vijayakar of Bollywood Hungama said that "Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's score is unusual and fresh in many aspects". [17] Bryan Durham of The Times of India rated 4 out of 5 saying "With three tracks on the Top 20 chart and quite a few songs that are sure to find place in your personal playlists, SEL’s music has found its winning groove." Zangoora – The Gypsy Prince is the first Bollywood musical. It was premiered on 23 September 2010 at Nautanki Mahal of Kingdom of Dreams, Gurgaon. It has a cast of 110 members with Hussain Kuwajerwala, Gauahar Khan, Kashmira Irani and Sadanand Patil playing lead, supported by Arjun Fauzdar; besides crew of 250 people. The film has seven songs and two remixes composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy with lyrics by Javed Akhtar. The album marks the second collaboration of the trio with Zoya Akhtar, and eighth with Excel Entertainment. The music was released on 17 June 2011 by T-Series.

The song is composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, while the lyrics are penned by Javed Akhtar. It was sung by noted Pakistani vocalist, Shafqat Amanat Ali along with Caralisa Monteiro who also penned the phrase "love will find a way..." in the song.

Raazi (transl. Agreement/Secretive) is a 2018 Indian Hindi-language spy thriller film directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Vineet Jain, Karan Johar, Hiroo Yash Johar and Apoorva Mehta under the banners of Junglee Pictures and Dharma Productions. It stars Alia Bhatt in the lead role and features Vicky Kaushal, Rajit Kapur, Shishir Sharma, and Jaideep Ahlawat in supporting roles. The film is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka's 2008 novel Calling Sehmat, a true account of an Indian Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) agent who, upon her father's request, is married into a family of military officers in Pakistan to relay information to India, prior to the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language fantasy action-adventure film written and directed by Ayan Mukerji, dialogues written by Hussain Dalal and produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Hiroo Yash Johar, Namit Malhotra and Mukerji – under Dharma Productions, Starlight Pictures and Prime Focus in association with Star Studios, along with Ranbir Kapoor and Marijke DeSouza. Mirzya is the soundtrack album to the 2016 film of the same name directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra from a story written by Gulzar, loosely inspired on the Punjabi folklore of Mirza Sahiban. The film's music is composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy collaborating with Mehra after Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) and composed nine songs for the film, and six short songs based on the folklore has been composed by singer Daler Mehndi; all of them were written by Gulzar. The soundtrack accompanied all the 15 tracks that influenced a variety of genres such as electronic dance, jazz, blues, folk, retro, classical and Sufi music.

Zehnaseeb (transl. Luck) is a romantic Hindi-language song from the 2014 film Hasee Toh Phasee. The track is composed by Vishal-Shekhar, with lyrics written by Amitabh Bhattacharya. The song has been sung by Chinmayi Sripaada and Shekhar Ravjiani. The music video of the song featured actors Parineeti Chopra and Sidharth Malhotra.
