A16 is an Italian restaurant in California. There are two locations: the original location in San Francisco and a second location in Oakland. The restaurant's cuisine focuses on the Italian region of Campania. In 2014, the restaurant was named to the Top 100 Restaurants in San Francisco list by Michael Bauer of the San Francisco Chronicle . [1]
The original A16 in San Francisco is located in the Marina District. The Oakland location is in the Rockridge neighborhood. [2] The San Francisco restaurant's dining room is long and narrow. In the middle of the restaurant is an open kitchen. [3] There is bar seating in the front and patio seating in the back. [4]
The Oakland location was designed by Cass Calder Smith of CCS Architecture. The space is described as "rustic-industrial". There entrance has large glass windows. The bar is made of thick marble. The exposed brick walls are an original component of the building architecture and wooden beams are visible on the ceiling. The ocean-themed artwork is by Kelly Tunstall. This location seats 85 and 125 including a private dining room. [5]
A16's menu focuses on the cuisine of Campania, Italy. [2] A16 is well known for its wood-fired pizza. Other dishes include braised octopus, fettuccine made with black pepper served with pig's trotters, sirloin steak and goat chop. Main courses come with a side dish of the diners choice, including cannellini beans or broccoli with calabrian chiles and colatura di alici. For dessert, the restaurant serves a chocolate tart with sea salt. [3] The menu offers many local ingredients from the San Francisco Bay Area, including coffee from Blue Bottle Coffee Company. [2] The San Francisco location offers three-course lunch meals for $20. During lunch time, the kitchen staff can be seen processing meat for dinner service, including pig, rabbit, goat, chicken, and duck. [6]
The wine list is maintained by owner and sommelier, Shelley Lindgren. It lists over 1,500 bottles of wine and focuses on Southern Italian wine. [5]
A16 was founded in February 2004 by Shelley Lindgren, a sommelier turned restaurateur, Victoria Libin, a tech lawyer, and Christophe Hille the founding chef. The restaurant is named after the Autostrada A16 in Italy. [2] Christophe Hille was the founding chef, followed by Nate Appleman. Christophe Hille earned three stars by the San Francisco Chronicle in the opening review. Nate Appleman was awarded the James Beard Foundation Award forRising Star Chef Award in 2009 and then quit A16 to move to New York. After he left, Liza Shaw became executive chef. A16 opened a restaurant in Tokyo Japan in 2009 in partnership with Giraud Restaurants Limited at the Marunouchi Park Building. The menu was tailored to be financially cost effective (i.e. they removed fennel from the menu due to how expensive it was at the time) and the kitchen staff had to modify their habits to meet the kitchen provided by Mitsubishi, which included a gas pizza oven instead of a wood oven. [7] In 2012, Christopher Thompson became Executive Chef. In 2013, Lindgren and Libin opened a second location in Oakland. [3] This second location has a full liquor license, unlike the original. [5] Thompson moved to the Rockridge location and left in 2014. That year, Rocky Maselli became executive chef at both locations. [8] Rocky Masselli left in 2017 and Nicolette Manescalchi became the chef. Victoria Libin left the restaurants in 2014 and Shelley Lindgren became the sole managing partner.
The restaurant is popular as a lunch spot for food and wine industry workers, including Robert Finigan, who frequented the restaurant prior to his death. [9]
In 2014, Zagat rated A16 a 24. [10] Michael Bauer of the San Francisco Chronicle has named A12 one of his favorite restaurants in San Francisco. In 2013 he gave it a three star review. [3] Bauer has listed A16 in his annual Top 100 Restaurants in San Francisco list seven times. [11] Over the years, Bauer has expressed concern about the quality of the original A16 suffering due to the opening of the new Oakland restaurant, and a frequent overturn of executive chefs. However, Bauer frequently reviews the restaurant and often states that the restaurant has not suffered despite these challenges and changes. [4] Bauer and Zagat both noted that A16 is a loud restaurant. Zagat described it as having an "off putting noise." [10]
The restaurant is well known for its wine list, which is maintained by owner Shelley Lindgren. The wine list was named one of the top three in the country by Lettie Teague in 2010. [12] It was also nominated for a James Beard Award. [5]
California-style pizza is a style of pizza that combines New York and Italian thin crust with toppings from the California cuisine cooking style. Its invention is generally attributed to chef Ed LaDou, and Chez Panisse, in Berkeley, California. Wolfgang Puck, after meeting LaDou, popularized the style of pizza in the rest of the country. It is served in many California cuisine restaurants. California Pizza Kitchen, Round Table Pizza, Extreme Pizza, and Sammy's Woodfired Pizza are four major pizza franchises associated with California-style pizza.
Original Joe's is a local chain of restaurants in the North Beach neighborhood of San Francisco and the Westlake neighborhood of Daly City. They serve a wide variety of foods, mostly Italian-American cuisine with some mainstream American favorites. Chris Cosentino is an American celebrity chef and reality television personality known as the winner of Top Chef Masters, a competitor on The Next Iron Chef and for his appearances on Iron Chef America. He is known for his haute cuisine offal dishes, and was chef-partner at Incanto in San Francisco. Forbes Traveler called Incanto "perhaps America's most adventurous nose-to-tail restaurant … On offer are lamb's necks, pig trotters and a five-course nose-to-tail tasting menu perhaps including venison kidneys and chocolate-blood panna cotta." Incanto closed on March 24, 2014. In December 2014, he opened Cockscomb, a restaurant centered around his updated interpretations of classic San Francisco dishes.
Tanya Holland is an American celebrity chef, restaurateur, podcast host, writer, and cookbook author. She is known as an expert of soul food. Holland is an alumna of Bravo TV's Top Chef, where she competed on the 15th season. She was the owner of Brown Sugar Kitchen in Oakland, California, which received national recognition and multiple Michelin Bib Gourmand awards.

Dopo and Adesso were a pair of restaurants in Oakland, California founded and run by chef Jon Smulewitz. Dopo was founded in 2003 and Adesso was spun off in February 2009 when the owners acquired additional nearby space. Both restaurants focused on charcuterie, with menus changing on a daily basis to take advantage of timely ingredients. They have been described by the New York Times as part of a new wave of innovative restaurants that have begun to improve Oakland's reputation for food, and have won extensive local acclaim, with both Dopo and Adesso being listed by the San Francisco Chronicle as one of the top hundred restaurants in the Bay Area in 2012.
Melissa Perello is an American chef, she is best known for holding a Michelin star at her restaurant Frances in San Francisco. She had previously won a star at restaurant Fifth Floor, and has won awards from both Chronicles and Food & Wine magazines.
Mama's on Washington Square is a family-owned restaurant located in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. Swan Oyster Depot is a seafood eatery and cultural landmark located in the Polk Gulch neighborhood of San Francisco, California. It opened there in 1903 and except for a brief hiatus and rebuilding period following the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, it has been running continuously in the same venue since that time. This makes it one of the longest continuous businesses and dining establishments in the United States. Swan's menu has remained largely unchanged throughout its history, and it has had exactly the same 18 wooden stools and marble counter that were installed for the post-earthquake reopening in 1912.
