Shehu Sani is a Nigerian senator,an author,playwright and a human rights activist. He is the President of the Civil Rights Congress of Nigeria - (CRCN). and the Chairman of Hand-in-Hand,Africa. He was a leading figure in the struggle for the restoration of democracy in Nigeria. He has been arrested and jailed by successive past military regimes in Nigeria. He was released from life imprisonment when democracy was restored in Nigeria in 1999. He contested and won the Kaduna Central Senatorial District on the platform of the All Progressive Congress on 28 March 2015.

The 2007 Sokoto State gubernatorial election occurred on April 14,2007. PDP candidate Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko won the election,defeating DPP Muhammed Dingyadi and 8 other candidates.
The 2012 Sokoto State gubernatorial election occurred on February 18,2012. PDP candidate Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko won the election,defeating ANPP Yusha'u Ahmed and 28 other candidates.
Kabiru Umar Abubakar Dikko predominantly known by his sobriquet Kabiru Sokoto is a convicted Nigerian terrorist and member of the Nigerian Islamic terrorist group,Boko Haram. He was born in Northern Nigeria which is predominantly occupied by the Hausa people and Fulani tribe. He was the mastermind of the Christmas Day bombing of the St Theresa Roman Catholic church on December 25,2011 in Madalla,Niger State which killed 37 Christians. Sokoto was arrested,fled custody the following day and was rearrested a month later. On December 21,2013,Sokoto was sentenced to life imprisonment. During his trial,the presiding judge said that Sokoto had shown no remorse for his actions.

Incumbent PDP Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri is eligible to run for re-election,but has not yet stated whether he will do so.

Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko representing Sokoto North,Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South and Abdullahi Ibrahim Gobir representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of All Progressives Congress. But the Court of Appeal Sokoto Division on 30 October 2019 sacked Shehu Abubakar Tambuwal representing Sokoto South on the platform of All Progressives Congress. Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party replaced the sacked senator.
The 2007 Nigerian Senate election in Sokoto State was held on April 21,2007,to elect members of the Nigerian Senate to represent Sokoto State. Umaru Dahiru representing Sokoto South,Ahmed Muhammad Maccido representing Sokoto North and Abubakar Umar Gada representing Sokoto East all won on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.
