James Onanefe Ibori is a Nigerian politician who was Governor of Delta State in Nigeria from 29 May 1999 to 29 May 2007. An ethnic Urhobo by descent,Ibori is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP). He is a leader in the Niger Delta region and a national figure in Nigeria. In 2012,Ibori was sentenced to 13 years in prison for money laundering.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is a Nigerian law enforcement and anti-graft agency that investigates financial crimes and unknown transactions such as advance fee fraud and money laundering. The EFCC was established in 2003,partially in response to pressure from the Financial Action Task Force on Money Laundering (FATF),which named Nigeria as one of 23 countries non-cooperative in the international community's efforts to fight money laundering. Some Nigerian described the war as "perfect" while others described it as "selective". However,the president has been criticized and accused of leading a selective war against corruption. Peter Onyeluka Nwaoboshi is a Nigerian politician who served as the senator representing Delta North senatorial district in the Nigerian Senate from 2015 to 2023. He was sacked shortly after being announced senator-elect during the 2019 general elections by a Federal High Court in Abuja,following allegations that he was not validly elected by his political party. The Appeal Court in Abuja however overturned the decision on 30 May 2019. The lead judge held that the Federal High Court that nullified his election had no jurisdiction over the case.

The 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections were held for state governors in 31 out of 36 Nigerian states. All but three elections were held on 18 March—concurrent with elections to every state house of assembly,three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections—while the Imo State,Kogi State,and Bayelsa State elections will be held on 11 November. The last regular gubernatorial elections for all states were in 2019. All states have a two term limit for Governors which makes 18 incumbent governors ineligible for re-election.
The 2023 Bauchi State gubernatorial election took place on 18 March 2023,to elect the Governor of Bauchi State,concurrent with elections to the Bauchi State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Bala Mohammed initially declined to run for re-election,instead running for president. However,after losing the PDP presidential primary in May 2022,Mohammed was renominated in a rerun primary. Mohammed was re-elected as governor by a 9% margin over first runner-up and APC nominee —former Chief of the Air Staff Sadique Abubakar.
