Afro Nation is an annual three-day music festival organised by global entertainment company The Malachite Group (TMG) [1] , founded in 2019 to unite the African diaspora in a celebration of dance, food, fashion, music [2] . The festival focuses on showcasing African and international artists across genres such as Afrobeats, Amapiano, RnB, Hip hop, Dancehall, and more. [3] [4] As well as the annual Portugal edition, Afro Nation has also since taken place in Ghana [5] , Puerto Rico [6] , Miami [7] and Detroit [8] .

Afro Nation as a festival and global cultural movement has evolved into a platform designed to amplify the voices of African artists worldwide. With past headliners like Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Megan Thee Stallion, 50 Cent, Chris Brown and Nicki Minaj, the festival has been bridging African music with the global stage. [9]

Since 2019 the flagship Portugal festival has doubled in size, attracting 40,000 people from 140 countries worldwide, with 90% of festival goers travelling to the event from abroad. [10]

The festival was nominated in the Best Overseas Festival category at the 2019 UK Festival Awards. [11] In 2020, Billboard Magazine named Afro Nation as one of The Gatekeepers of the Nigerian music industry. [12]

History

On 1 August 2019, Afro Nation (also marketed as Afro Nation Portugal) was established as a four-day annual music festival in Portimão, Portugal. Billed as the first festival to celebrate the African Diaspora, the event drew approximately 20,000 attendees daily and featured live music from Nigeria, Ghana, Tanzania, Jamaica, the UK and the US. It was created to promote African music genres and provide a platform for artists across the diaspora. [13]

On 13 December 2019, Afro Nation released its compilation mixtape curated by MOVES Recordings, titled Afro Nation, Vol. 1. [14] The album features guest appearance from SMADE, Ice Prince, Slim Kofi, Lighter Tod, Joey B, Kuami Eugene, Medikal, Eddie Kadi, Bisa Kdei, Adekunle Gold, Oxlade, Reekado Banks, Eugy, Br3nya, and Terry Apala. [11]

In 2020, the planned second editions of both Afro Nation Portugal [15] and Afro Nation Ghana were postponed to 1 July 2022, [16] and 29 December 2022 [17] , due to COVID-19.

On 26 September 2021, Afro Nation and Official Charts Company founded the official weekly UK Afrobeats Chart Show on BBC Radio 1Xtra, [18] with host Eddie Kadi. [19]

Expansion and Developments (2022–2024)

In 2022 Afro Nation Portugal introduced a new main stage, which was also transported to Accra for Afro Nation Ghana [20] . The 2022 Portugal edition also saw the introduction of a second stage named Piano People [21] , dedicated to Amapiano, reflecting the increasing prominence of the South African electronic music genre globally. [22]

In 2022 the Piano People brand expanded to standalone events in the UK, taking place at a variety of venues such as Ministry of Sound, Printworks [23] and also launched the first Amapiano stage at the Notting Hill Carnival [24] .

Afro Nation Portugal 2023’s attendance figures were reported to have doubled since 2019, now attracting 40,000 people from 140 countries worldwide [25] [26] . That year the festival had a direct impact of €114 million to the local economy. [27] On 10 March 2024 the festival released a short film documentary titled ‘Afro Nation: A Movement’ shot during the 2023 edition of the Portugal festival [28] , and in October 2024 the film was shown during Amsterdam Dance Event. [29]

In November 2023 Piano People hosted its largest Amapiano event at London's 15,000 capacity [30] club Drumsheds [31] , before launching one-day open-air festivals at New York's Central Park on 27 July 2024 [32] and London’s Southwark Park [33] on 23 August 2024.

Afro Nation Portugal 2024 was headlined by Nigerian artist Asake, who brought out UK rapper Central Cee as a surprise guest for their debut live performance of the track ‘Wave’. [34] The 2024 edition of Afro Nation Portugal was sponsored by brands including Hennessy, Havana Club, Jägermeister and Converse.Performances from the Piano People stage were streamed by Beatport, and DBN Gogo's live set from Afro Nation featured in DJ Mag's Top Mixes of 2024. Fifth Anniversary (2025)

Afro Nation Portugal is set to return for its fifth edition on 9 July 2025, with Burna Boy, Tems, Amaarae, Uncle Waffles, DBN Gogo and more announced to perform over three days on Praia da Rocha beach. [36] [37]

Portugal's audience and headliners

Despite its export to other countries, Afro Nation main venue keeps on being at Portugal. Both audience and highly safe environment have maintained Portugal's summer festival as Afro Nation main venue in terms of investment associated with increasing growth of audience and line up quality as festival records [38] shows.

Challenges

In 2020, Afro Nation Portugal was set to begin operating as a three-day annual event. However, the second edition was postponed to 1 July 2022, [16] due to the outbreak of COVID-19. [41] The festival faced backlash from customers after initially not issuing refunds and instead having to retain tickets for the postponed event. [42] In December 2020, the Ghanaian edition of the festival was also cancelled due to the COVID-19 outbreak. [43]

In 2022, the festival in Puerto Rico was shadowed with the cancellation of Burna Boy, Tems, Koffee and Beenie Man in the leadup to the festival. [44] The same year, the festival was stopped in Ghana during the course of its second day, due to safety concerns. [45] On 9 June 2023, the organisers of the festival announced Afro Nation Nigeria, a new series of the festival to be held in Lagos. [46] On 31 October 2023, the Nigerian edition of the festival was cancelled. [47]

Cultural impact

Since 2019, Afro Nation has been promoting African music and artists and changing the narrative around Africa, whilst promoting unity, inclusivity and environmental sustainability. [48] [49]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Wizkid</span> Nigerian singer and songwriter (born 1990)

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, is a Nigerian singer and songwriter. Born in the Ojuelegba suburb of Surulere, Lagos, Wizkid is a voice in the emerging Afrobeats movement. His music is a blend of Afrobeats, afropop, R&B, afrobeat, reggae, dancehall, and pop. He began recording music at the age of 11 and released a collaborative album with the Glorious Five, a group he and a couple of his church friends formed. In 2009, Wizkid signed a record deal with Banky W's Empire Mates Entertainment (E.M.E). He rose to the limelight after releasing "Holla at Your Boy", the lead single from his debut studio album, Superstar (2011), which also spawned the singles "Tease Me/Bad Guys" and "Don't Dull".

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Burna Boy</span> Nigerian singer-songwriter (born 1991)

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu , known professionally as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, performer and record producer. He gained recognition in 2012 after releasing "Like to Party", the lead single from his debut studio album L.I.F.E (2013). In 2017, Burna Boy signed a record deal with Atlantic Records and its parent company Warner Music Group. His third studio album Outside, which also serves as his major label debut, was released in 2018.

Oluseye Desmond Sodamola, professionally known as Spinall, is a Nigerian disc jockey, record producer, and songwriter. He has released six studio albums and collaborated with artists that have included Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Asake, Joeboy among others. He has won numerous awards for his work, including All Africa Music Awards and The Beatz Awards. He is also the first Nigerian disc jockey to play at festivals such as Coachella, SXSW, and Glastonbury.

Divine Ikubor, popularly known as Rema, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper. He gained recognition with his 2019 song "Dumebi". That same year, he signed with D'Prince's record label, Jonzing World. He achieved international recognition with his 2022 single "Calm Down", which spawned a remix with American singer Selena Gomez that peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100. The song also led Billboard Afrobeats Songs chart for a record-setting 58 weeks.

Afrobeats, not to be confused with Afrobeat or Afroswing, is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrobeats is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Nigeria and Ghana. Genres such as hiplife, jùjú music, highlife, azonto music, and naija beats, among others, were amalgamated under the "Afrobeats" umbrella.

Samuel Onwubiko, known by his stage name Limoblaze is a Nigerian gospel singer-songwriter and rapper. He is well known for the hit song "Jireh " with Lecrae and Happi, a reworking of "Jireh" by Elevation Worship and Maverick City Music; the song made it to the Billboard U.S. Afrobeats Songs of 2022, Official Charts No. 15, and won several other nominations including The Headies and The Stellar Awards.

Victony Nigerian singer and rapper

Anthony Ebuka Victor, known professionally as Victony, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper. He was born in Ojo, Lagos, he hails from the Orsu local government area of Imo State. He was influenced while growing up by artists such as Davido, Wizkid, Mi, and Falz. Victony began his musical journey in 2016 as a rapper on soundcloud, releasing freestyles and mixes. Lekan Osifeso Jnr., popularly known as Lojay, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer. Timeless is the fourth studio album by Nigerian singer Davido. It was released on 31 March 2023, through Davido Music Worldwide, Columbia Records, and Sony Music Entertainment. Primarily an amapiano record, the album explores other musical styles such as Afrobeats, dancehall, ragga, konto, highlife, and Afropop. Timeless comprises 17 tracks and features collaborations with Skepta, Angelique Kidjo, Asake, Focalistic, and The Cavemen, among others. Timeless received generally positive reviews from music critics, who praised its production and considered it to be one of Davido's most accomplished albums yet. In July 2023, Davido embarked on the Timeless North American Tour to support the album.

To celebrate 20 years of promoting and supporting African and Afro-inspired music, Trace staged the 1st Trace Awards & Festival at the BK Arena in Kigali, Rwanda on 21 October 2023. "Amapiano" is a song by Nigerian musician Asake and Nigerian rapper Olamide. The song is a single from Asake's second studio album, Work of Art, and was produced by Nigerian producer Magicsticks. The music video, shot by Jyde Ajala, was released on 24 May 2023. The song was a surprise release and gained over 100,000 streams within less than 24 hours of its release and debuted at number one of the Spotify Top Songs Nigeria Daily Chart. The song was nominated for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy awards. It was one of the most streamed songs of 2023 on Audiomack, garnering 87.7 million streams on the platform. Former US president Barack Obama listed the song among his favorite music of 2023.

Emmanuel Mensah Agbeble, known by his brand name APM World Mag or simply APM World is a Ghanaian-American photographer, filmmaker and creative director based in New York City. He is the recipient of the 2023 Ernie Paniccioli Award for Best Photographer of the Year which was organized by the Black Music Action Coalition.

Afrobeats: The Backstory is a documentary series that delves into the rise and global influence of Afrobeats, a genre of music that originated in Nigeria. Directed by Nigerian filmmaker Ayo Shonaiya, the series premiered on Netflix on 29 June 2022, offering an in-depth look at the cultural, political, and social landscape that shaped the Afrobeats sound, as well as its growth.
