Alexander Melei Rose (born 17 November 1991) is a Samoan and American athlete, competing primarily in the discus throw and occasionally in the shot put and the hammer throw. [2] He represented Samoa at the 2016 Olympics, [3] and 2020 Summer Olympics, [4] as well as the Commonwealth Games and Pacific Games.

Life

Although born in the United States, Rose holds dual citizenship with Samoa, since his father was born there and emigrated to the US as a 19-year-old. [5] He threw for Central Michigan University. [1]

He represented Samoa in the 2013 World Championships in Athletics [6] and the 2015 World Championships in Athletics, [7] failing to qualify for the final on both occasions. He's had great success at the Oceania Athletics Championships, with eight gold medals and a silver in three different throwing events—Discus, Shot Put & Hammer Throw—over four different games from 2021 to 2017.

At the 2022 World Athletics Championships he made the final, coming 8th in the world. [8] Rose competed for Samoa at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham where he finished 4th with a best throw of 64.56 m, just 2 cm off third place. [9] [10]

His personal best in the discus was 66.91 metres (Claremont, California, 19 July 2019), until he improved his national record to 67.4 8m at the University of Arizona on 22 May 2021, and then, in 2023, Rose threw 70.39 m at the Oklahoma Throws Series on 16 April 2023, setting a new Oceania Area Record.

At the 2024 Olympics he became the first Pacific islander to make it to an Olympic track and field final. [11]

He won a bronze medal in the men's shot put at the Games, and won gold in the men's discus throw.

Vivian Peters-Chukwuemeka is a retired Nigerian shot putter and two-time Olympian. She won the gold medal in the shot put at the 2002 Commonwealth Games and has won three consecutive titles at the All-Africa Games from 1999 to 2007. She was the African Champion in the event in 2002, 2006 and 2008. She also competes in discus throw and hammer throw, but not on world level.

Sultana Frizell is a Canadian track and field athlete competing in the hammer throw. Frizell currently trains under the guidance of Derek Evely in Kamloops, British Columbia. She competed at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Frizell is the former Commonwealth Games champion in the hammer throw and Commonwealth Games record holder for the event as well.

Jackson Gill is a New Zealand track and field athlete who competes in the shot put. Gill throws with his right hand, using the spin technique. In 2012, he defended his title at the 2012 World Junior Championships.

Emanuele Tusitatino Taulol Fuamatu is a Samoan athlete. He competed for Samoa in shot put at the 2012 Summer Olympics where he did not advance to the final. Fuamatu competed for Australia at the 2005 IAAF World Youth Championships, 2006 IAAF World Junior Championships, and the 2008 IAAF World Junior Championships. Fuamatu was a recipient of the International Olympic Committee Solidarity Scholarship. He holds the current Male NSW Under 16, Under 18, Under 20, and Open Shot Put Records. Navjeet Kaur Dhillon is an Indian track and field athlete who competes as a Discus thrower. Her current world ranking in the Women's Discus Throw category is 46, and in the Women's Overall ranking is 4165. She was the bronze medalist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games, with her final throw of 57.43 m and became the second Indian to win a medal at the World Junior Championships in Athletics in 2014. She holds a personal best of 59.18 m, set in 2018 in Indian Grand Prix in February, 2018.

Nu'uausala Sialataua Maloata Tuilefano is an American Samoan shotputter, who has represented American Samoa at the Pacific Games and Samoa at the Commonwealth Games.

Obiageri Pamela Amaechi is a Nigerian discus thrower who won the discus event at the 2023 African Games and came third in the discus events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the 2022 African Championships in Athletics. She competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics, and has also competed for the Princeton Tigers in US college athletics.
