Arthur Bonnell Schirmer Jr. was the fifty-ninth mayor of Charleston,South Carolina,completing the final four months of J. Palmer Gaillard,after Gaillard's resignation. He did not run for election for a full term.
Schirmer was born on February 24,1933,and died on July 17,2008;he is buried at Magnolia Cemetery.
Schirmer was sworn in on August 19,1975. [1] Although Schirmer served for only four months,he did not want to be thought of as a mere interim mayor,once saying,"When my accomplishments are considered,people will realize that I have been anything but an interim mayor." During his brief tenure,he directed the city to begin sharing its pools with the school district and also began planning for the sale of the municipal airport. His mayorship ended on December 15,1975,with the inauguration of Joseph P. Riley Jr. At that time,he returned to his job running paving and landscaping companies and operating a limestone quarry. [2]
Schirmer was raised in downtown Charleston on Bull Street,but during his time in office,he lived in West Ashley,making him one of the few mayors of Charleston to have lived there. A set of tennis courts at Bees Landing Recreation Center is named in his honor. [2]
Marion Square is greenspace in downtown Charleston,South Carolina,spanning six and one half acres. The square was established as a parade ground for the state arsenal under construction on the north side of the square. It is best known as the former Citadel Green because The Citadel occupied the arsenal from 1843 until 1922,when the Citadel moved to the city's west side. Marion Square was named in honor of Francis Marion.

Between January and May 2019,Caslen was senior counsel to the president and interim chief financial officer at the University of Central Florida. On July 19,2019,the Board of Trustees of the University of South Carolina elected him as the school's 29th president,a position he assumed on August 1,2019. Caslen also served as HigherEchelon's Special Advisor on Executive Leadership and Character Development. He resigned as President at South Carolina on May 12,2021.
John Palmer Gaillard Jr. was an American politician who was mayor of Charleston,South Carolina from 1959 to 1975. The Gaillard Center is named after him. During his tenure,Gaillard significantly expanded the size of Charleston by annexing nearby neighborhoods.
William McG. Morrison was the fifty-seventh mayor of Charleston,South Carolina,serving between two terms between 1947 and 1959. He was the first person elected to three terms as mayor of Charleston as a result of his win in June 1955. He lost his fourth bid by 455 votes to J. Palmer Gaillard,Jr. on June 9,1959.

John Frederick Ficken Jr. (1843–1925) was the forty-eighth mayor of Charleston,South Carolina,completing one term from 1891 to 1895. Ficken was born on June 16,1843,in Charleston to Prussian immigrants John Frederick Ficken Sr.,and Rebecca (Beversen) Ficken. He enrolled in the College of Charleston,but he joined the Confederate military at the outbreak of the Civil War. Ficken was given leave from active duty to complete his college education;he received an A.B. degree in 1864 and rejoined active duty. After the war ended,he began practicing law in Charleston and travelled to Germany for a year in 1869 to study civil law at the University of Berlin. From 1877 to December 1891,when he assumed the mayorship of Charleston,Ficken served in the South Carolina statehouse as a representative. He did not stand for re-election in 1891. During his tenure as mayor,Ficken lived at 74 Rutledge Ave. In 1902,he became president of the South Carolina Loan &Trust Co.
