The Badminton Association of Malaysia or BAM (Malay: Persatuan Badminton Malaysia) is the governing body of badminton in Malaysia. The association was founded in 1964. Nevertheless, the history of Malaysian badminton starts much earlier. Already in 1934 an association was founded by the provinces Perak, Penang, Selangor, Johore and Singapore.

BAM is registered with the sports commissioner's office under the Sports Development Act 1997 of the laws of Malaysia. The association was founded in 1964 and has 15 states as their members. [2]

Use of tournament bans on players who resigned from BAM

Badminton Association of Malaysia, as the national association, is the sole authority to register Malaysian players into Badminton World Federation-sanctioned tournaments, of which made up majority of the international badminton tournaments. [3] On several occasions, BAM had refused to register players who have had left their fold.[ citation needed ]

In 2011, Tan Chun Seang was banned from Asian tournaments for two years after walking out from the national team. [4] [5] In 2019, Toh Ee Wei left BAM after a fallout with the association, and was barred from international tournaments as an independent player. [6] Toh had since returned to BAM in 2020. [7]

In September 2021, Goh Jin Wei resigned from the national team, citing health issues and explained that she "could never be able to fulfil the requirements and conditions of the national team". [8] Goh instead signed as an independent player with Kuala Lumpur Racquet Club on 6 January 2022. [9] On 19 January 2022, Lee Zii Jia decided to quit the team as he felt that he couldn't withstand the pressure to be on the national team. [3] [10] In response, BAM sanctioned both Lee and Goh by banning both players for participating in any international events for 2 years. [11] BAM deputy president Jahaberdeen Mohamed Yunoos said that the decision was made "to safeguard BAM's integrity as a national institution and custodian of the sport's national interest". [12] The decision has caused anger among national and international fans, denouncing BAM decision. [13] Danish badminton player and Olympic champion Viktor Axelsen condemn the sanctions as "crazy" and expressed solidarity with Lee and Goh. [14] The same condemnation also expressed by other international badminton players like Anders Antonsen, Hans-Kristian Vittinghus, and Gronya Somerville. [15] [16] Supporters of the decision argued that Lee's premature exit from the national team may trigger other players to do same, and potentially losing sponsorship income for BAM. [17] After a meeting between BAM and Lee on 25 January 2022, an agreement was reached with the ban to be lifted with terms yet to be disclosed. [18]

He also represented Malaysia competed at the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games and 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Lim Khim Wah is a Malaysian badminton player from Penang who plays in the doubles category. His men's doubles partner was Goh V Shem until late 2014. They two won their first Superseries title at the 2014 Malaysia Open. Together with Goh, Lim reached a career high as world number 11 in the men's doubles in May 2013. In 2015, Lim resigned from the Badminton Association of Malaysia. In 2022, Lim teamed up with Nur Mohd Azyriyn Ayub, they started their career in three back-to-back tournaments in India, with the India Open as the first tournament.

Heah Joo Seang was a Malayan politician, business leader, rubber magnate, philanthropist and especially a supporter of education. Malaysia, as it has since become, only existed after Joo Seang's death. Tan Chun Seang is a Malaysian badminton player specializing in men's singles. His best achievement was won the Grand Prix title at the 2013 Canada Open by beating Eric Pang in the final. He was banned from playing in Asian countries for two years by Badminton Association of Malaysia due to his decision to quit the national team. In 2018, Tan was suspended by the Badminton World Federation and banned from participate in fifteen years for playing tournaments over match fixing allegations.

Goh Jin Wei is a Malaysian badminton player. She won the 2015 and 2018 BWF World Junior Championships and the girls' singles title at the 2018 Youth Olympics. At senior level, she won the women's singles title at the 2017 SEA Games.

The 2016 Badminton Asia Junior Championships is the 19th edition of the Asia continental junior championships to crown the best U-19 badminton players across Asia. This tournament was held in Bangkok, Thailand, between 9 and 17 July 2016. The championships consists of mixed team and individual events. There were 19 countries with over 250 players participating in this edition.

Nur Izzuddin bin Mohd Rumsani is a Malaysian badminton player. He won the 2022 German Open in the men's doubles event partnered with Goh Sze Fei.

Lee Zii Jia is a Malaysian badminton player. He was the men's singles gold medalist at the 2019 SEA Games and won his first BWF Super 1000 title at the 2021 All England Open. Lee is the 2022 men's singles Asian champion, winning the title at the 2022 Badminton Asia Championships.

Kisona Selvaduray is a Malaysian badminton player. She was the bronze medalist at the 2013 Asian Youth Games in the women's singles category. She won her first senior international title at the Indonesia International Series tournament in the women's singles event. She also won gold medal twice in the Malaysia International Series tournament in 2017 and 2018. On top of that, she dominated the women's singles in 2019 SEA Games.

Pearly Tan Koong Le is a Malaysian badminton player who entered the national team in 2013. She was the gold medalists in the women's doubles and mixed team event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. In the junior event, she won the girls' doubles silver at the 2018 Asian and World Junior Championships.
