The county's largest city and a regional educational, medical and commercial center is Johnson City. Washington County is Tennessee's oldest county, having been established in 1777 when the state was still part of North Carolina. Washington County is part of the Johnson City, TN Metropolitan Statistical Area, which is a component of the Johnson City–Kingsport–Bristol, TN-VA Combined Statistical Area, commonly known as the "Tri-Cities" region.

Samuel Perry "Powhatan" Carter was a United States naval officer who served in the Union Army as a brigadier general of volunteers during the American Civil War and became a rear admiral in the postbellum United States Navy. He received a nomination for appointment to the grade of brevet major general on January 13, 1866, two days before he was mustered out of the volunteers, to rank from the omnibus date of March 13, 1865. The nomination was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 12, 1866. He was the first and thus far only United States officer to have been commissioned both a general officer and a Naval flag officer.

Clinch Mountain is a mountain ridge in the U.S. states of Tennessee and Virginia, lying in the ridge-and-valley section of the Appalachian Mountains. From its southern terminus at Kitts Point, which lies at the intersection of Knox, Union and Grainger counties near Blaine, Tennessee, it runs in a generally east-northeasterly direction to Garden Mountain near Burke's Garden, Virginia. The Bald Mountains are a mountain range rising along the border between Tennessee and North Carolina in the southeastern United States. They are part of the Blue Ridge Mountain Province of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The Bald Mountains stretch from the Pigeon River in the south to the Nolichucky River in the north, and comprise parts of Cocke County, Greene County, and Unicoi County in Tennessee and parts of Madison County and Yancey County in North Carolina. The Great Smoky Mountains border the range to the south, and the Unakas rise opposite the Nolichucky to the north. The range gets its name from the relatively frequent occurrence of grassy balds atop the more prominent summits.
Designated by the United States Congress in 1986, the Big Laurel Branch Wilderness is a 6,332-acre (26 km2) wilderness area within Carter County in the U.S. state of Tennessee. The area's elevation is 3,623 feet (1,104 m) above sea level.
The 1976 United States presidential election in Tennessee was held on November 2, 1976. The Democratic Party candidate, former Georgia governor Jimmy Carter won the state of Tennessee with 56% of the vote against Republican Party candidate, President Gerald Ford, carrying the state’s 10 electoral votes. This was the last time a Democratic presidential candidate won more than 50% of the vote in the Volunteer State, or carried the state by a double-digit margin.
