Bobby Johnson (born c. 1973) is an American football coach who is the offensive line coach for the Washington Commanders of the National Football League (NFL). Johnson played college football for the Miami Redhawks. Johnson has also previously served as an assistant coach for the New York Giants, Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, Oakland Raiders, Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Early life and playing career

Johnson was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, graduating from Akron Hoban High School in 1991, where he excelled in football as well as track and field. He committed to Miami (Ohio) to play college football, where he was a 3-year starter at offensive tackle. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in health appraisal and sports organization. [1]

Coaching career

College career

Johnson began his coaching career at Akron as a graduate assistant in 1995. He was promoted to defensive line coach in 1997. In 1999 he returned to his alma mater where he coached the tight ends until 2003. In 2004 he transitioned to offensive line coach. Johnson was hired in 2005 by Indiana, working as the team’s offensive line coach through the 2009 season. [2]

NFL career

Johnson’s first NFL coaching position was with the Buffalo Bills as the assistant offensive line coach from 2010-2011. In 2012, he worked as the Jacksonville Jaguars tight ends coach for one season. In 2013, he was hired as the Detroit Lions tight ends coach [3] and in 2014 [4] he was moved to the assistant offensive line coach position. In 2015, he joined the Oakland Raiders as tight ends coach. [5] [6] He spent three seasons in this role, but was not retained after head coach Jack Del Rio was fired after the 2017 season. In January 2018, Johnson was the head coach of the West team in the 2018 East–West Shrine Game. Following that, he was hired as the assistant offensive line coach for the Indianapolis Colts in 2018. Buffalo Bills

Between 2019 [8] and 2021 he was the offensive line coach for the Buffalo Bills. [9]

New York Giants

In 2022 he followed Brian Daboll to New York and became the Giants offensive line coach. [10] He was fired after the 2023 season, where the Giants offensive line gave up a league leading 85 sacks, the second most in NFL history. [11]

Washington Commanders

On February 15, 2024, Johnson was hired by the Washington Commanders as their offensive line coach under head coach Dan Quinn. [12]

He also served as defensive coordinator in the college ranks at the University of Central Florida, University of South Florida and University of Maine. Bresnahan also served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts of the NFL and the United States Naval Academy (Navy) and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the college ranks. Bresnahan also assisted in the Officiating Department of the NFL for 3 seasons. He is the son of Tom Bresnahan, a long time NFL assistant and Offensive Coordinator who coached 4 Super Bowls under Marv Levy (HOF-2001) with the Buffalo Bills.

Peter Henry Metzelaars is an American former football tight end who played for 16 seasons in the National Football League (NFL) with the Seattle Seahawks, the Buffalo Bills, the Carolina Panthers and the Detroit Lions. He played college football for the Wabash Little Giants and was selected by the Seahawks in the third round of the 1982 NFL draft.

A coaching tree is similar to a family tree except it shows the relationships of coaches instead of family members. There are several ways to define a relationship between two coaches. The most common way to make the distinction is if a coach worked as an assistant on a particular head coach's staff for at least a season then that coach can be counted as being a branch on the head coach's coaching tree. Coaching trees can also show philosophical influence from one head coach to an assistant.

Benjamin Lee McAdoo is an American football coach, currently serving as a senior offensive assistant of the New England Patriots in the National Football League (NFL). McAdoo was most notably the head coach of the New York Giants from 2016 to 2017, after serving as their offensive coordinator the previous two years under former head coach Tom Coughlin. He was fired from that position on December 4, 2017 following a 2–10 start, along with benching longtime starting quarterback Eli Manning. At the time of his termination, his 28 regular season games were the fewest by a Giants coach since 1930. Prior to working for the Patriots, McAdoo had also served as an assistant coach for several college football teams, as well as for the New Orleans Saints, the San Francisco 49ers, Green Bay Packers, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Carolina Panthers.

The 2014 Detroit Lions season was the franchise's 85th season in the National Football League (NFL), their 81st as the Detroit Lions and the first under a new coaching staff led by head coach Jim Caldwell. The Lions suffered the passing of long-time owner William Clay Ford Sr., who died on March 9, 2014, at the age of 88, and wore patches with his initials on their jerseys in his honor. After the Philadelphia Eagles lost to the Washington Redskins in Week 16, the Lions clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 2011. They lost to the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Game 24–20, ending their season. Jim O'Neil is an American football coach who currently is the defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions. Previously he was the defensive coordinator at Northwestern University and as assistant coach in the NFL for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders. He was a coach for numerous college football teams before that.
