Bonehill is a large village [1] in the Lichfield District in Staffordshire, England. It is close to the village of Mile Oak and town of Fazeley, where it forms part of the civil parish of Fazeley. Bonehill is split north-south and lapping the boundary of the Tamworth borough. The village is separated from the town centre by the Fazeley-Two Gates-Wilnecote Bypass of the A5 road. Although, a large industrial and residential part of it is adjoins the Bitterscote suburb of Tamworth at Ventura Park and the nearby village of Hopwas at Dunstall Lane. [2]
Bonehill was historically a township of the town of Fazeley and has strong ties to the Peel family. [3] The village's name is likely derived from the Old English name, "Bula's Hill", or "Hill of the Bullock". [4] The village grew alongside Mile Oak and Fazeley during the Industrial Revolution and the opening of the Birmingham and Fazeley Canal. As well as its proximity to Watling Street.
Bonehill House was located near the northern end of Drayton Manor, it was once the seat of Mrs. Peel, the sister of Edmund Peel. Edmund died a few months just after the death of his brother, Robert in November 1850. [5] Following the first and second world wars, the house served as offices for a company called "Brightside". [6] However, the company later moved out of the house and the house has since been converted into a private residence. The house was given Grade II listed status by Historic England in February 1963. [7]
Bonehill Farmhouse is located on Bonehill Road, it is a farmhouse which has since been converted into a villa for hire and short term stays. [8] It is a Grade II listed building, given it by Historic England in October 1987. [9] The farm has also been redeveloped for use by industrial and retail outlets. Some of these include:
*The Forest Restaurant [10] - A restaurant.
*Florascape Garden Centre [11] - A garden centre.
*Grangewood Fencing Supplies - Tamworth Depot [12] - A fence supplies company with multiple depots.
*Anker Storage [13] - a self storage facility.
Bonehill Mill is located on Lichfield Street, between Fazeley town centre and Mile Oak village centre. It is was tied originally into the 19th-century industrial boom. The mill was left abandoned following closure and was given Grade II listed status by Historic England in July 1990. However, a fishery called "Bonehill Mill Fishery" continues to operate behind the mill. [14]
In 2023, the old mill site was redeveloped for housing, while retaining the listed parts of it. [15] [16] Work on the housing redevelopment has since been completed. [17]
The fishery has three lakes that span an area of over 28 acres and offer all-year round fishing and also act as a venue too. [18]
Bonehill is today mostly a mix of industrial, retail and residential, with no through roads in the old village except "The Green", that runs from Watling Street in Mile Oak, to "Plantation Lane" also in Mile Oak. However, the northern portion near Bitterscote is made up of "Ventura Park", a multi-split retail park and multiple industrial zones. [19] Some notable shops and companys include:
* Sainsbury's superstore. [20]
* Sytner Group Mini car dealership, also includes a mobility scheme. [23]
*Johnsons Volkswagen Tamworth. [24]
Bonehill is served by a regular bus service, operated by Arriva named "Sapphire" (Route 110). [26] The nearest railway station is Wilnecote in nearby Wilnecote.
