Bynum is located in eastern Hill County at 31°58′11″N97°0′14″W / 31.96972°N 97.00389°W (31.969782, –97.003852), [6] in Central Texas. Texas State Highway 171 runs through the east side of the town, leading northwest 8 miles (13 km) to Hillsboro, the county seat, and southeast 7 miles (11 km) to Malone.

As of the census [3] of 2000, there were 225 people, 78 households, and 58 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,540.6 inhabitants per square mile (594.8/km2). There were 85 housing units at an average density of 582.0 per square mile (224.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 88.00% White, 5.78% African American, 5.33% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.67% of the population.
There were 78 households, out of which 43.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.3% were married couples living together, 11.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% were non-families. 23.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.88 and the average family size was 3.44.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 32.0% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 28.0% from 25 to 44, 19.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The community of Bynum is served by the Bynum Independent School District and is home to the Bynum High School Bulldogs.
