CTERA Networks is a privately held enterprise software company headquartered in New York and Israel. The company has regional offices in the UK, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Australia. [4] As of 2021, the company is designated as the leading vendor in distributed cloud file storage by GigaOm. [5] [6]

CTERA has partnered with companies including Amazon Web Services, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, [7] IBM, [8] Hitachi Vantara and Cisco. [9] Clients include Deutsche Telekom, [10] Banco Santander, [11] Axa [12] and the United States Department of Defense. [13] [14] In October 2016 IBM became a CTERA reseller. IBM's Cloud Object Storage, integrated with the CTERA Enterprise File Services Platform, can be deployed on-premises, in the cloud or in a hybrid on-premises/cloud setup. [15]

History

CTERA was founded in 2008 by Liran Eshel and Zohar Kaufman. [16] [17]

As of 2018, CTERA has raised $100 million in funding from investors including Benchmark Capital, Venrock, Cisco Systems, Bessemer Venture Partners and Vintage Investment Partners. [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [17] [16] [25]

In June 2016, CTERA earned a contract to provide a private cloud file sharing solution to the United States Department of Defense. As part of the agreement, CTERA and DISA (Defense Information Systems Agency) co-developed a mutual authentication technology using government-issued smart cards for additional layers of protection beyond the standard enterprise integration with Microsoft Active Directory servers. In 2022, CTERA updated its Global File System, introducing enhanced capabilities for managing cloud storage, permanent data deletion, and other data protection features. The product was enhanced to includes new features such as cloud storage routing for more granular data management and control, as well as enterprise key management for cryptographic keys. [26]

Products

In 2009, CTERA released its first cloud storage gateway, the C200. The gateway combined the speed of local network storage with off-site cloud storage and backup technology. [27] [28] In 2010, CTERA released the C400 cloud storage gateway which added features for office server backup and recovery and collaboration capability for multiple users working on files stored in the cloud or on the gateway. In 2011, the C800 gateway was released with 24 TB of raw local storage. [29] [30] [31] In 2016, CTERA announced a virtual cloud storage gateway that can be deployed from VMware or KVM servers that enabled customers to use existing hardware. CTERA released updates to its cloud storage gateway portfolio in April 2016 focused on efficiency and storage capacity. [32] [33]

CTERA released Enterprise File Sync and Share (EFSS) in 2012, which enabled users to access, share and collaborate on files from any location by storing files either locally or on the cloud. [34] Also in 2012, CTERA launched a mobile app which made it possible to access files and backups on iOS and Android devices. [35] [36]

In December 2015, CTERA announced Cloud Server Data Protection, its storage-as-a-service server data protection software for enterprise CloudOps. [8] [37] Cloud Server Data Protection protects server data on a private or virtual private cloud using backup agents for Windows and Linux environments and object storage services through cloud platforms such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, IBM Cloud and OpenStack-based clouds. A remote, online, or managed backup service, sometimes marketed as cloud backup or backup-as-a-service, is a service that provides users with a system for the backup, storage, and recovery of computer files. Online backup providers are companies that provide this type of service to end users. Such backup services are considered a form of cloud computing.

Veritas Backup Exec is a data protection software product designed for customers with mixed physical and virtual environments, and who are moving to public cloud services. Supported platforms include VMware and Hyper-V virtualization, Windows and Linux operating systems, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Storage, among others. All management and configuration operations are performed with a single user interface. Backup Exec also provides integrated deduplication, replication, and disaster recovery capabilities and helps to manage multiple backup servers or multi-drive tape loaders.

Cloud storage is a model of computer data storage in which data, said to be on "the cloud", is stored remotely in logical pools and is accessible to users over a network, typically the Internet. The physical storage spans multiple servers, and the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a cloud computing provider. These cloud storage providers are responsible for keeping the data available and accessible, and the physical environment secured, protected, and running. People and organizations buy or lease storage capacity from the providers to store user, organization, or application data.

Nirvanix is an American-based provider of business phone systems, VoIP services, hosted PBX, SIP Trunks, and cloud storage services headquartered in San Diego, California, United States. The company offers a variety of business phone solutions for small, medium as well as enterprise businesses. It also has a strong presence in public, hybrid and private cloud storage services with usage-based pricing. Based on previous service companies founded in 1998, Nirvanix shut down in October 2013. In July 2021 Nirvanix re-entered the business with $12 million funding.

In computer storage, a global file system is a distributed file system that can be accessed from multiple locations, typically across a wide-area network, and provides concurrent access to a global namespace from all locations. In order for a file system to be considered global, it must allow for files to be created, modified, and deleted from any location. This access is typically provided by a cloud storage gateway at each edge location, which provides access using the NFS or SMB network file sharing protocols.

A cloud storage gateway is a hybrid cloud storage device, implemented in hardware or software, which resides at the customer premises and translates cloud storage APIs such as SOAP or REST to block-based storage protocols such as iSCSI or Fibre Channel or file-based interfaces such as NFS or SMB.

Converged storage is a storage architecture that combines storage and computing resources into a single entity. This can result in the development of platforms for server centric, storage centric or hybrid workloads where applications and data come together to improve application performance and delivery. The combination of storage and compute differs to the traditional IT model in which computation and storage take place in separate or siloed computer equipment. The traditional model requires discrete provisioning changes, such as upgrades and planned migrations, in the face of server load changes, which are increasingly dynamic with virtualization, where converged storage increases the supply of resources along with new VM demands in parallel.

Its software helps users access, manage, analyze, and store unstructured data using techniques in distributed data consolidation, artificial intelligence, and network load balancing.
