Lark Suite is an enterprise collaboration platform developed by ByteDance and first released to the public in 2019. [2] [3] [4] [5]

Lark and its China-only equivalent Feishu ("flying message") operate independently of one another and store user data separately (Lark in Singapore, Feishu in Beijing). [2]

History

Lark was developed by Lark Technologies Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of ByteDance, based in Singapore, [2] and was originally developed as an internal tool. [6]

In November 2018, Lark became ByteDance's internal communication and collaboration platform. [7]

In April 2019, Lark became available in overseas markets. [7]

In March 2020, ByteDance prepared to release a "Google-like suite of office collaboration tools" (referencing Google Workspace) focusing on cloud-based file management and document and spreadsheet editing. [2]

In April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lark made its service available for free across Southeast Asia. [5]

On January 18th 2025, Lark was banned in the United States, along with all other ByteDance apps, due to the implantation of the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, making it inaccessible to American citizens.

Files created and edited through the Google Docs suite are saved in Google Drive.

According to Reuters, Zhang maintains over 50 percent of ByteDance's voting rights. The surging global popularity of TikTok made Zhang the richest man in China in 2024.

In 2020, the United States government announced that it was considering banning the Chinese social media platform TikTok upon a request from then-president Donald Trump, who viewed the app as a national security threat. The result was that TikTok owner ByteDance—which initially planned on selling a small portion of TikTok to an American company—agreed to divest TikTok to prevent a ban in the United States and in other countries where restrictions are also being considered due to privacy concerns, which themselves are mostly related to its ownership by a firm based in China.

Wei-Ying Ma is known for his contributions to the field of computer science, including his academic achievements and leadership in technological innovation. He has authored over 300 papers and obtained 169 patents as of January 2024. He has served on the editorial boards of the ACM Transactions on Information System (TOIS) and the ACM/Springer Multimedia Systems Journal. He also served as a program co-chair of the International Conference on World Wide Web (WWW) 2008, a program co-chair of the Pacific Rim Conference on Multimedia (PCM) '07, and the general co-chair of the Asia Information Retrieval Symposium (AIRS) '08. He was the general co-chair of ACM Special Interest Group on Information Retrieval (SIGIR) 2011 and also a member of the International World Wide Web Conferences Steering Committee from 2010 through 2016. As Vice President and head of the AI lab at ByteDance, he led the development of AI-powered technologies integrated into platforms like Douyin, TikTok, and Jinri Toutiao, which impacted digital content creation and distribution. Ma currently holds the position of Huiyan Chair Professor at Tsinghua University and serves as the Chief Scientist at the Institute for AI Industry Research (AIR), a program he established alongside Dr. Ya-Qin Zhang in 2020.
