The 2012 Caerphilly Council election took place on 3 May 2012 to elect members of Caerphilly County Borough Council in Wales. [1] This was on the same day as other United Kingdom local elections.

Caerphilly County Borough Council

Caerphilly County Borough Council is the governing body for Caerphilly, one of the Principal Areas of Wales.

Election results

The Labour Party won control of the council from Plaid Cymru, after gaining an additional 18 seats. [2] Among the notable Plaid Cymru defeated councillors were the current mayor, Vera Jenkins (Crumlin ward) and Ron Davies, the ex-Labour Secretary of State for Wales (Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen ward). [2]

The Labour Party is a centre-left political party in the United Kingdom which has been described as an alliance of social democrats, democratic socialists and trade unionists. The party's platform emphasises greater state intervention, social justice and strengthening workers' rights.

Plaid Cymru is a social-democratic political party in Wales advocating Welsh independence from the United Kingdom within the European Union.

Ron Davies (Welsh politician) British politician

Ronald Davies is a Welsh politician, former Secretary of State for Wales, former Member of Parliament and former member of the Welsh Assembly. He describes himself as a politician belonging to the "traditional left" who had "spent his life looking for a socialist progressive party". He was a member of the Labour Party until 2004, then joining Forward Wales. He was an Independent from 2009 to 2010 before joining Plaid Cymru in that year.

2016 National Assembly for Wales election

The National Assembly for Wales election 2016 was held on Thursday 5 May 2016, to elect members of the National Assembly for Wales (AMs). It was the fifth election for the National Assembly, the third election taken under the rules of the Government of Wales Act 2006 and the first since the Wales Act 2014.

The fifth election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to Labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed, but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council.
