Carl is an unincorporated community in Travis County, in the U.S. state of Texas. [1] It is located within the Greater Austin metropolitan area.
Thirty people were reportedly living there in 1886. The next year, a post office was established there with William T. Hart as the postmaster. The community had 250 residents, a steam gristmill, a cotton gin, four churches, a hotel, and a general store by the early 1890s but around 1900, the settlement started to deteriorate. In 1902, the post office was shut down, and mail was instead delivered to Buda in Hays County. In the 1940s, the location was identified on county route maps by a church and a few dispersed dwellings. In 1990, Carl was still referred to as a community. [2]
Carl is located 12 mi (19 km) south of Austin and 2 mi (3.2 km) north of Creedmoor in southern Travis County. [2]
Carl had its own school in the early 1890s and the 1940s. [2] Today the community is served by the Del Valle Independent School District. Schools that serve the community are Creedmoor Elementary School, John P. Ojeda Junior High School, and Del Valle High School.
Travis County is located in south central Texas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 1,290,188. It is the fifth-most populous county in Texas. Its county seat and most populous city is Austin, the capital of Texas. The county was established in 1840 and is named in honor of William Barret Travis, the commander of the Republic of Texas forces at the Battle of the Alamo. Travis County is part of the Austin–Round Rock–Georgetown Metropolitan Statistical Area. It is located along the Balcones Fault, the boundary between the Edwards Plateau to the west and the Blackland Prairie to the east.
