Cheryl Pickering-Moore (born 1950) was one of the first two women to fly as a pilot for the Guyana Defence Force and a pioneer aviator in her native Guyana. In 2013, she was recognised in Guyana with a postage stamp issued with her likeness.
Cheryl Pickering was born on 14 December 1950 in Georgetown, Guyana to Pearl and Layard Pickering As the fifth of eight children in her family she grew up in the Kitty neighbourhood of Georgetown attending Comenius Moravian Primary School. She then continued her education at St. Joseph High School.
In 1968, after graduating from high school, Pickering became a student teacher at Malgre Tout Government School in Demerara. The following year, she transferred with the Ministry of Education to serve as a secretarial typist in the Faculty of Law at the University of Guyana.In 1973, Pickering joined the Guyana Defence Force as a personal assistant to the Commanding Officer, Ulric Pilgrim. The following year, she became a Second Lieutenant, one of the few women officers in the Women's Army Corps. In 1975, she served as one of the colour guard for the visit at the Timehri International Airport of the first female prime minister, Sirimavo Bandaranaike of Sri Lanka.
Pickering began attending social work classes at the University of Guyana where she heard that government scholarships, offered in conjunction with International Women's Year, were available for women to attend flight training school. She applied and was selected. along with Beverley Drake and ten men, to attend Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida.The curriculum included aerodynamics, aircraft performance and systems, flight planning, maintenance, meteorology and navigation, as well as Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) and Visual Flight Rules (VFR) training. She completed her training and earned her commercial pilot's licence, though upon returning to Guyana had to complete training to convert her licence to a local licence.
Upon completion of her training, Pickering was hired as one of the first two-woman pilots of the Guyana Defence Force, flying Britten-Norman Islanders in 1977.That same year, she married Stanley Moore and the young couple moved to the Campbellville neighbourhood of Georgetown. In the Air Corps, Pickering-Moore was promoted to serve as the Executive Officer of the corps and flew Avro, Bombardier Dash 8, Britten-Norman Islander, and Twin Otter planes to transport soldiers and supplies.
In 1980, Pickering-Moore was transferred to the government owned Guyana Airways, where she flew as a commercial pilot. Primarily her flights took her to local destinations, but periodically she flew to Barbados or Trinidad. In 1989, she left Guyana Airways and began flying with Leeward Islands Air Transport (LIAT) in Antigua.She obtained licensing to fly bigger planes, such as the Hawker Siddeley HS 748 and though based jointly in Antigua and Barbados, she routinely flew throughout the Eastern Caribbean, as well as to the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and to Venezuela.
In addition to flying, Pickering-Moore raised her five children and obtained a degree in Business Administration from the American InterContinental University. She retired from flying in 2013 and began working as a volunteer with women's and children's ministries in Barbados.In 2007, she was one of those honoured for International Women's Day celebrations of the 40th Anniversary Women's Army Corps. In 2013, Pickering-Moore and other pioneer aviators of Guyana were honoured with their likenesses being featured on postage stamps.
Jacqueline "Jackie" Cochran was an American pilot and business executive. She pioneered women's aviation as one of the most prominent racing pilots of her generation. She set numerous records and was the first woman to break the sound barrier on 18 May 1953. Cochran was the wartime head of the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) (1943–44), which employed about 1000 civilian American women in a non-combat role to ferry planes from factories to port cities.
LIAT (1974) Ltd, formerly known as Leeward Islands Air Transport Services and operating as LIAT, is a regional airline headquartered in Antigua and Barbuda that operated high-frequency inter-island scheduled services to 15 destinations in the Caribbean. The airline's main base was V.C. Bird International Airport, Antigua and Barbuda, with a secondary base at Grantley Adams International Airport, Barbados.

The Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) was a British civilian organisation set up during the Second World War and headquartered at White Waltham Airfield that ferried new, repaired and damaged military aircraft between factories, assembly plants, transatlantic delivery points, maintenance units (MUs), scrap yards, and active service squadrons and airfields, but not to naval aircraft carriers. It also flew service personnel on urgent duty from one place to another and performed some air ambulance work. Notably, some of its pilots were women, and from 1943 they received equal pay to their male co-workers, a first for the British government.
Wing Commander Linda Mary Corbould OAM is a retired officer of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), who was the first woman to command a RAAF flying squadron. She joined the RAAF in 1981, and became one of its first female pilots in the early 1990s. Corbould flew transport aircraft, including during the Iraq War in 2003, and commanded No. 36 Squadron from 2006 to 2008. She retired from the RAAF in 2011, but remains an officer in the Air Force Reserve.
Diana Barnato Walker MBE FRAeS was a pioneering English aviator. In World War II, she became one of the first women pilots of the Air Transport Auxiliary, flying 80 types of aircraft and delivering 260 Spitfires. In 1963, she became the first British woman to break the sound barrier, flying at Mach 1.6, which also represented a world air speed record for women.
Flight Lieutenant Michelle Jayne Goodman DFC is a retired Royal Air Force officer. She was the first woman to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), for her actions while serving in Iraq, and the first female officer to be awarded any British combat gallantry medal.

Caricom Airways, which stands for Caribbean Commuter Airways, was a regional airline from the Caribbean, with the headquarters of the company at Paramaribo, Suriname. From the down-town Zorg en Hoop Airport in Suriname, Caricom Airways mainly flew charter flights to various destinations in the interior of Suriname, the Caribbean and Northern Brazil.

Women have been flying powered aircraft since 1908; prior to 1970, however, most were restricted to working privately or in support roles in the aviation industry. Beverley Drake is a Guyanese pilot and aviation expert who is an administrator and accident investigation analyst with the United States National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). She was one of the first two woman pilots to work in the Guyana Defence Force, first woman commercial pilot of Guyana Airways, and was the first and only black woman to serve as a senior aviation accident investigator for the NTSB. She serves as the manager of the Federal Women's Program of the NTSB and program director of the Industry and Government Affairs division of the NTSB.
Tammie Jo Shults is a retired American commercial airline captain, author, and retired naval aviator. Known for being one of the first female fighter pilots to serve in the United States Navy, following active duty she became a pilot for Southwest Airlines. She retired from Southwest Airlines in 2020.
Asnath Mahap is a South African pilot. She has flown for United Nations Red Cross and World Food Programme in Central and West Africa. Recently, she was appointed as a spokesperson for Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day campaign.
Eleanor Wadsworth was a second world war pilot, who served as one of the RAF’s “Spitfire women”. Wadsworth was the oldest surviving pilot of the Air Transport Auxiliary (ATA) before her death in December 2020.
