Florian Zeller is a French novelist, playwright, theatre director, screenwriter, and film director. He won the Prix Interallié for his 2004 novel The Fascination of Evil and several awards for his plays. He wrote and directed his first film, 2020's The Father, based on his play of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman. The film received six nominations at the 93rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture, with Zeller co-winning Best Adapted Screenplay. Nomadland is a 2020 American drama film written, produced, edited and directed by Chloé Zhao. Based on the 2017 nonfiction book Nomadland: Surviving America in the Twenty-First Century by Jessica Bruder, it stars Frances McDormand as a widow who leaves to travel around the United States in her van as a nomad. David Strathairn also stars in a supporting role. A number of real-life nomads appear as fictionalized versions of themselves, including Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells.

The film stars Viola Davis, Chadwick Boseman, Glynn Turman, Colman Domingo, and Michael Potts. Inspired by the career of Ma Rainey, an influential blues singer and the title character, the film dramatizes a turbulent recording session in 1920s Chicago.

Kemp Powers is an American filmmaker and playwright. He is best known for his work on the play One Night in Miami, the 2020 film adaptation of the same name, and Soul. His screenplay for One Night in Miami... earned him a Best Adapted Screenplay nomination at the 93rd Academy Awards in April 2021. His work on Soul meant that Powers became the first African-American to co-direct a Disney animated feature.

<i>Collective</i> (2019 film) 2019 film

Collective is a 2019 Romanian documentary film directed, written, produced and edited by Alexander Nanau. The film centers on the 2016 public health scandal following the Colectiv nightclub fire. The film follows dual stories of investigative journalists at the Romanian newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor uncovering public healthcare corruption and maladministration, and the government's response to the crisis at the Ministry of Health.

The 21st Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards honoured the films selected by the Vancouver Film Critics Circle as the best of 2020. Although usually presented in December of the same year for which the awards are presented, these awards were delayed to the winter of 2021, due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and the associated complications in film production and distribution.
