Sir Christopher George Nugee (born 23 January 1959 in London), officially styled Lord Justice Nugee, is a British lawyer who has served as a Lord Justice of Appeal of England and Wales [1] since 2020. [2]

Education

Of Huguenot descent and the second son of Edward Nugee QC TD , [3] he was educated at Radley College before going up to Corpus Christi College, Oxford, graduating as BA (proceeding MA) and winning the Eldon Scholarship. [4] He later pursued legal studies at City University (Dip Law). [5]

Nugee was called to the Bar at Inner Temple in 1983, taking silk in 1998, then elected a Bencher of the Inn in 2003. He then served as a High Court Judge from 2013 until 2020, assigned to the Chancery Division. [6] Appointed a Knight Bachelor in 2014, [7] [8] he was promoted Lord Justice of Appeal in October 2020 [9] being sworn of the Privy Council. [10]

Family

In 1991, Nugee married Emily Thornberry, a senior Labour party politician formerly serving as Shadow Attorney-General. [11] They have three children, and live in Islington, the north London constituency which his wife represents as Member of Parliament.

He is the brother of John Nugee, Andrew Nugee, and Lt Gen Richard Nugee. [3]

There are various levels of judiciary in England and Wales—different types of courts have different styles of judges. They also form a strict hierarchy of importance, in line with the order of the courts in which they sit, so that judges of the Court of Appeal of England and Wales are given more weight than district judges sitting in county courts and magistrates' courts.
