Cichlidogyrus is a genus of monopisthocotylean monogeneans in the family Ancyrocephalidae. The type-species of the genus is Cichlidogyrus arthracanthus Paperna, 1960, by original designation. [1] All the species of the genus are parasites on the gills of fish, namely African Cichlidae, Nandidae and Cyprinodontidae. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
Species of Cichlidogyrus are parasitic in many cichlid species in the Lake Tanganyika; a recent study (2016) has shown that species which are parasite on deep-water fish show reduced parasite-host specificity in comparison to species from littoral waters, probably an adaptation to low host availability. [9]
According to Antoine Pariselle and Louis Euzet, 71 species of Cichlidogyrus were known in 2009 [3] - new species have been described since. Nikol Kmentová, Milan Gelnar, Stephan Koblmüller and Maarten P.M. Vanhove estimated that the number of species was more than 100 in 2016 [10] and Chahrazed Rahmouni, Maarten P. M. Vanhove and Andrea Šimková listed 111 species in 2017. [11]
Species of Cichlidogyrus have been introduced in various parts of the world, as alien species, where their hosts, particularly tilapia, have been introduced. [12]
Among many species, a few examples:
The Oklahoma salamander is a salamander in the family Plethodontidae, endemic to the United States. The species was first described by George A. Moore and R. Chester Hughes in 1939. Its natural habitats are temperate forests, rivers, and freshwater springs. It is threatened by habitat loss.
The spotfin goby cichlid is an African species of cichlid endemic to Lake Tanganyika where it is only known from the northern end of the lake. They live amongst pebbles in the surf-zone. This species can reach a length of 7 centimetres (2.8 in) TL. This species can also be found in the aquarium trade. Although presently considered the only species in the genus, another undescribed species is known from the Lukuga River.
Louis Euzet was a French parasitologist.
Lamellodiscus is a genus of monopisthocotylean monogeneans in the family Diplectanidae; all species of Lamellodiscus are small worms, parasitic on the gills of teleost fish.
Cichlidogyrus gillesi is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It is known to infect Tilapia species, particularly Tilapia guineensis, and was first found in Cameroon. It can be differentiated from its cogenerates by a large and trapezoid heel of the penis, as well as having an S-shaped and wrinkle-walled vagina. It was named in honor of Dr. André Gilles of Aix-Marseille University.
Scutogyrus vanhovei is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It is known to Tilapia species, particularly Tilapia mariae, and was first found in Cameroon. It can be differentiated from its cogenerates by the presence of a distinct swollen portion of its penis.
Cichlidogyrus vandekerkhovei is a species of monopisthocotylean monogeneans in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It was first found infecting the gills of Ophthalmotilapia ventralis in Lake Tanganyika. It can be differentiated from its cogenerates by the unusual length of its dorsal transverse bar auricles.
Cichlidogyrus makasai is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It was first found infecting the gills of Ophthalmotilapia ventralis in Lake Tanganyika. It can be differentiated from its cogenerates by the unusual length of its dorsal transverse bar auricles.
Cichlidogyrus sturmbaueri is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It was first found infecting the gills of Ophthalmotilapia ventralis in Lake Tanganyika. It can be differentiated from its cogenerates by the unique shape of the accessory piece of its male genitalia.
Cichlidogyrus centesimus is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It was first found infecting the gills of Ophthalmotilapia ventralis in Lake Tanganyika. It can be differentiated from its cogenerates by possessing a spirally coiled thickening at the end of its penis, the accessory piece in the genital apparatus being nonexistent, and a particular uncinuli configuration in its haptor. Its specific epithet is derived from the Latin centesimus, meaning "hundredth", due to the fact that it was the 100th species described by Antoine Pariselle.
Cichlidogyrus philander is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean, in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It is ectoparasitic on the gills of the fish Pseudocrenilabrus philander.
Ancyrocephalidae is a family of monogenean flatworms. The family is considered as a "temporary name" in WorMS but includes a large number of genera and species.
Delane C. Kritsky is an American parasitologist who specialised on the Monogenea, a class of parasitic flatworms which are important ectoparasites of fishes. His research was mainly in the fields of taxonomy, faunistics, and phylogeny of the Monogenea.
Jean-Lou Justine, French parasitologist and zoologist, is a professor at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, France, and a specialist of fish parasites and invasive land planarians.
Cichlidogyrus attenboroughi is a species of monopisthocotylean monogeneans in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It is a parasite of the gills of the fish Benthochromis horii in Lake Tanganyika.

Cichlidogyrus kmentovae is a species of monopisthocotylean monogenean in the family Ancyrocephalidae. It is a parasite of the gills of the fish Hemichromis stellifer of the lower Basin of River Congo.
Enterogyrus is a genus of monogeneans belonging to the family Ancyrocephalidae.
Scutogyrus is a genus of flatworms belonging to the family Ancyrocephalidae.
