Cirquella is an extinct genus from a well-known class of fossil marine arthropods, the trilobites. It lived during the Atdabanian stage, [2] in the former continent Laurentia. [3]

Description

Only the thin and lightly calcified headshields (or cephalon) of Cirquella have ever been found. It is very flat, almost oval in outline, the length about 85% of the width. The central area of the cephalon (or glabella) is moderately tapered forward. The furrows dividing the glabella are only weakly developed. The back of the eye ridge is opposite the first lobe (L1) of the glabella in front of the band (or occipital ring) at the back of the glabella. [3] In Cirquella espinata there is no genal spine but a slight angularity of margin opposite first lobe in front of the occipital ring. In Cirquella nummularia the rim of the cephalon is entirely rounded. [4]

Distribution

C. nummularia is known from the earliest half of the Lower Nevadella Zone, in the Dogtooth Mountains, British Columbia, Canada, and in Nevada.
C. espinata lived at the same time in the Southern Canadian Rocky Mountains. [4]
C. nelsoni is reported from the Fallotaspis-Judomia Faunule, Fallotaspis Biozone, Campito Formation, Inyo-White Mountains, Eastern California. [5]

Habitat

Cirquella species were probably marine bottom dwellers, like all Olenellina.

Redlichiida order of arthropods (fossil)

Redlichiida is an order of trilobites, a group of extinct marine arthropods. Species assigned to the order Redlichiida are among the first trilobites to appear in the fossil record, about halfway during the Lower Cambrian. Due to the difficulty to relate sediments in different areas, there remains some discussion, but among the earliest are Fallotaspis, and Lemdadella, both belonging to this order. The first representatives of the orders Corynexochida and Ptychopariida also appear very early on and may prove to be even earlier than any redlichiid species. In terms of anatomical comparison, the earliest redlichiid species are probably ancestral to all other trilobite orders and share many primitive characters. The last redlichiid trilobites died out before the end of the Middle Cambrian.

<i>Paradoxides</i> genus of trilobites

Paradoxides is a genus of large to very large trilobites found throughout the world during the Mid Cambrian period. One record-breaking specimen of Paradoxides davidis is 37 cm (15 in). It has a semicircular head, free cheeks each ending with a long, narrow, recurved spine, and sickle-shaped eyes, providing almost 360° view, but only in the horizontal plane. Its elongated trunk was composed of 19-21 segments and was adorned with longish, recurved lateral spines. Its pygidium was comparatively small. Paradoxides is a characteristic Middle Cambrian trilobite of the 'Atlantic' (Avalonian) fauna. Avalonian rocks were deposited near a small continent called Avalonia in the Paleozoic Iapetus Ocean. Avalonian beds are now in a narrow strip along the East Coast of North America, and in Europe.

<i>Analox</i>

Analox is an extinct genus of agnostid trilobite. It lived during the Botomian stage. It can easily be distinguished from other trilobites by the two furrows that extend forwards and sidewards from the front of the glabella.

<i>Archaeaspis</i> genus of trilobites (fossil)

Archaeaspis is an extinct genus of redlichiid trilobites. It lived during the late Atdabanian stage, which lasted from 521 to 515 million years ago during the early part of the Cambrian Period. The first specimens were first found in Siberia, where they were originally thought to have been endemic. Later, though, more specimen were found in the Inyo Mountains in Southern California. An Ediacarian proarticulatan was given the same name, Archaeaspis Ivantsov, 2001. This is however a junior homonym. The name Archaeaspis Repina in Khomentovskii and Repina, 1965, for the trilobite has priority. The new valid name for the proarticulate is Archaeaspinus Ivantsov, 2007.

Nevadella is an extinct genus of trilobites, fossil marine arthropods, with species of average size. It lived during the late Atdabanian stage, which lasted from 530 to 524 million years ago during the early part of the Cambrian Period.

<i>Yunnanocephalus</i> genus of trilobites

Yunnanocephalus is a genus of ptychopariid trilobite. It lived during the late Atdabanian and Botomian stages, in what are currently Antarctica, Australia and China. It was a "moderately common" member of the Chengjiang Fauna. Yunnanocephalus is the only genus currently assigned to the Yunnanocephalidae family.

Weeksina is a genus of trilobites, an extinct group of marine arthropods. It lived during the Dresbachian faunal stage of the late Cambrian Period which lasted from 501 to 490 million years ago. Its calcified dorsal exoskeleton has an inverted egg-shape. Characteristics of this trilobite are the backward directed spine on the 8th of 10 segment of the articulated middle part of the body, and the second pair of furrows from the back on the raised central part of the headshield called glabella, which curve from inward to fully backward, almost isolating a pair of lobes, just in front of the occipital ring, that is defined by a furrow that crosses the entire width of the glabella. Weeksina is known only from the Weeks Formation at North Canyon, House Range, Millard County, Utah.

Meteoraspis is an extinct genus of ptychopariid trilobites of the family Tricrepicephalidae. The various species lived from 501 to 490 million years ago during the Dresbachian faunal stage of the late Cambrian Period. Fossils of Meteoraspis are characteristic of Late Cambrian strata in North America, though they are found in Late Cambrian strata elsewhere in the world, such as M. nevensis from Victoria Land, Antarctica.

It can be easily distinguished from all other trilobites by the combination of the absence of dorsal sutures in the head shield like all Olenellina, and a distinctly bulbous frontal lobe (L4) of the raised axial area in the head called glabella. The species lived at the end of the Lower Cambrian.

Fallotaspidoidea superfamily of trilobites (fossil)

The ”Fallotaspidoidea” are a superfamily of trilobites, a group of extinct marine arthropods. It lived during the Lower Cambrian (Atdabanian) and species occurred on all paleocontinents except for the Gondwana heartland. A member of this group, Profallotaspis jakutensis, has long been the earliest known trilobite, but recently the redlichiid Lemdadella has been claimed as occurring even earlier.
