Cosmopolites is a genus of true weevil in the Dryophthorinae subfamily [1] and tribe Sphenophorini. The type species and most economically important is the banana weevil Cosmopolites sordidus. [2] [3]
The genus contains at least five described species, including the following:
Borer may refer to:
Anthonomus is a genus of weevils. This genus includes major agricultural pests such as the boll weevil, strawberry blossom weevil, and pepper weevil, as well as promising biological pest control agents such as Anthonomus santacruzi.
Larinus is a genus of true weevils, comprising about 180 species, mostly in the Palaearctic region. Turkey appears to have a significant diversity of the group, with more than 50 species recorded in the Eastern part of the country.
Pissodes is a genus of weevils described by Ernst Friedrich Germar in 1817.
Otiorhynchus is a large genus of weevils in the family Curculionidae. Many species of the genus, particularly the black vine weevil and the strawberry root weevil, are important pests, both as larvae and as adults. Larvae feed on plant roots. Adults are flightless with fused elytra and feed at night on plant foliage. In many species of the genus at least some races are polyploid and parthenogenetic, while the rest of the races and species are diploid and bisexual. Otiorhynchus weevils, particularly O. scaber, have been a popular subject for studies of the evolution of parthenogenesis. The genus is native to the Palearctic region. However, sixteen species were inadvertently introduced to North America and have become widespread there.
Sitona is a large genus of weevils in the family Curculionidae native to the Nearctic and Palaearctic regions. Over 100 species have been described. Sitona is easily distinguished from related genera by flat, recumbent scales on the mandibles, by the absence of an oval scar on the mandibles, by short and broad rostrum with a deep, longitudinal, median groove, and by dense scales on the body.
Mandalotus is a genus of weevils in the family Curculionidae. The species are considered crop pests in Australia.
Rhynchophorus, or common name palm weevils, is a genus of beetles in the weevil family, Curculionidae. Palm weevils are major pests of various trees in the family Arecaceae throughout the tropics including: coconut, Areca catechu, species of the genus Phoenix, and Metroxylon sagu. Two species are invasive pests outside their native ranges, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus and Rhynchophorus palmarum.
A stemborer is any insect larva, or arthropod, that bores into plant stems. However the term most frequently refers among the Coleoptera to the larva of certain longhorn beetles such as Dorysthenes buqueti and those of the genus Oberea, and among the Lepidoptera to certain moths of the Crambidae, Castniidae, Gelechiidae, Nolidae, and Pyralidae families.
Plaesius javanus, the Jepson's beetle, is a species of clown beetles belonging to the family Histeridae.
Ceutorhynchus is a genus of true weevils in the tribe Ceutorhynchini. There are at least 400 described species in Ceutorhynchus.
Hypera is a genus of clover and alfalfa weevils in the beetle family Curculionidae. There are at least 280 described species in Hypera.
Atrichonotus is a genus of broad-nosed weevils in the beetle family Curculionidae. There are about nine described species in Atrichonotus.
Lepyrus is a genus of true weevils in the beetle family Curculionidae. There are more than 70 described species in Lepyrus.
Stenancylus is a genus of true weevils in the beetle family Curculionidae. There are about nine described species in Stenancylus.
Stenomimus is a genus of true weevils in the beetle family Curculionidae. There are more than 30 described species in Stenomimus.
Cosmopolites sordidus, commonly known as the banana root borer, banana borer, or banana weevil, is a species of weevil in the family Curculionidae. It is a pest of banana cultivation and has a cosmopolitan distribution, being found in all parts of the world in which bananas are grown. It is considered the most serious insect pest of bananas.
Polytus mellerborgi, commonly known as small banana weevil, is a species of weevil widely distributed in southeastern Polynesia through Melanesia, Micronesia, Indo-Malaya, south China, Burma, India, Sri Lanka, other islands of the Indian Ocean to Madagascar and as far as Mexico and Central America.
