On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the series holds an approval rating of 83% based on 6 reviews with an average rating of 5.9/10. [9]

In a positive review, IGN's David Jagneaux wrote, "It's not the best video game adaptation ever...but it's a good debut that has room for growth with (hopefully) future seasons." [10] Writing for The A.V. Club , Sam Barsanti called the series, "a fun, if forgettable video game adaptation." [11] The Escapist's Jesse Lab responded more negatively, lamenting it as "a heartbreaking disappointment." [12]

There is also a hentai OVA series based on it, as well as some other media including audio CDs, novels and comic books. He spends his childhood far from civilization until he meets a teen girl named Bulma, who encourages him to join her quest in exploring the world in search of the seven orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered. Along his journey, Goku makes several other friends, becomes a family man, discovers his alien heritage, and battles a wide variety of villains, many of whom also seek the Dragon Balls.
