It was originally described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1787, who placed it in the genus Musca [3] [2] but is now the type species of the paraphyletic genus Drosophila . [4] Drosophila funebris is a member of the Immigrans-tripunctata radiation of the subgenus Drosophila . [5]
It is a cosmopolitan species. [6] It is an exotic species in New Zealand. [7] In Australia it is found in New South Wales, and Victoria. [6]
