Softball is a popular variation of baseball, the difference being that it is played with a larger ball on a smaller field and with only underhand pitches permitted. Softball is played competitively at club levels, the college level, and the professional level. The game was first created in 1887 in Chicago by George Hancock.
A comparison of the differences between baseball and softball can be made as softball is directly descended from baseball. An observer of one game would find the other very similar, but there are several important rule differences.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation Europe, known as WBSC Europe, was established on February 10, 2018, during a Congress of the Confederation of European Baseball and the European Softball Federation in Val d’Europe, France. the establishment of WBSC Europe followed the historic merger of the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB) and the European Softball Federation (ESF). As of September 2022, WBSC Europe counts 40 members for baseball and 39 for softball.

The National Softball League or NSL is a co-ed slowpitch softball league created for the 2009 British softball season (April–September). The league has run every season since then and grew to a two-division league in 2017. The inaugural season had 14 teams compete in three qualifying events, as well as the Premier Nationals.

The Coed Slowpitch European Championship is the main championship tournament between national coeducational slowpitch softball teams in Europe, governed by WBSC Europe. Prior to 2018 this tournament was governed by the European Softball Federation (ESF).
The ESF men's European Cup Club Championship is a championship tournament between national club champions for men's fastpitch softball teams in Europe, governed by the European Softball Federation. After the 2011 season, the ESF European Cup and the ESF Cup Winners Cup have merged to the new European Men's Super Cup Championship. The Super Cup is now the only European men's championship for club teams.
The European Cup Winners Cup Club Championship was a championship tournament between national club cup winners for men's softball teams in Europe, governed by the European Softball Federation. If a cup tournament was not held the tournament was also open for the runner up of the national championship. After the 2011 season, the ESF Cup Winners Cup merged with the ESF European Cup to form the European Men's Super Cup Championship. From 2012 the Super Cup is the only European championship for club teams.
16-inch softball is a variant of softball, but using a larger ball that gradually becomes softer the more the ball is hit, and played with no gloves or mitts on the fielders. It more closely resembles the original game as developed in Chicago in the 19th century by George Hancock, and today it remains most popular in Chicago, New Orleans, Atlanta, and Portland, Oregon. It also saw some popularity in Nashville, Tennessee, in the early 1980s.

Softball is played in Tasmania. The game was brought to the island during the late 1940s from Melbourne, Victoria. The sport would grow in popularity in Tasmania with 56 teams in 1976 to 216 in 1984. Men's softball is not popular in Tasmania. The first softball only facility was built in Tasmania in 1984.

The World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) is the world governing body for the sports of baseball, softball, and Baseball5. It was established in 2013 by the merger of the International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and International Softball Federation (ISF). Under the WBSC's organizational structure, the IBAF and ISF now serve as the confederation's baseball and softball divisions, respectively. Each division is governed by an executive committee, while the WBSC is governed by an executive board.
The Super 6 Baseball and Softball is a tournament between national baseball teams in Europe, governed by the Confederation of European Baseball (CEB), the European Softball Federation (ESF) and the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC). It was held for the first and only time from September 18 to 23, 2018 in Hoofddorp, Netherlands. It was organized by the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB), the City of Hoofddorp and the local baseball club Hoofddorp Pioniers. It was featured by the top 6 nations of the 2016 European Championship and ESF Women's Championship.
