Flux is the fourth studio album by American singer-songwriter Poppy. It was released on September 24, 2021, through Sumerian Records. The album was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen and features a more organic sound in comparison to her previous album, I Disagree . The album received positive reviews.
During an interview with Spin , Poppy said that she wanted the songwriting to be the focal point of the album as opposed to "the rollercoaster of emotions that I Disagree was." [1] The album was produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen who had previously worked with artists such as Paramore, M83 and St. Vincent, among others. [1] [2] On June 30, 2021, Poppy released the lead single for the new album titled, "Her". [3] The title track was released as the second single for the album. [4] On August 25, 2021, Poppy released the third single from the album titled "So Mean" and released it with an accompanying music video. [5] The album was released on September 24, 2021. [6]
Flux has been described as alternative rock, [7] [8] [9] grunge, [10] [11] pop-punk, [10] [11] dream pop, [11] [12] shoegaze, [11] and punk rock. [13] AllMusic and Flood Magazine both called the album a rock record." [7] [14] Flood Magazine also called the album grunge-pop. [7] According to Clash, "Flux sees Poppy continue to embrace her love of punk, rock and heavy metal but still keeps that day-dreaming pop element to it that some of her previous works have." [10] According to Spin , the album "[draws] on stoner-metal ('Lessen the Damage'), pop-punk ('So Mean'), new wave ('Hysteria') and shoegaze-y dream-pop ('As Strange as It Seems') in satisfying bursts." [1] The title track utilizes some electronic elements. [13] The album marks a departure from the metal sound of her previous album and is considered to be less aggressive. However, the album still features some screaming from Poppy. [15] The album also features a more organic sound in comparison to her previous album. According to Poppy during an interview with Spin, "for all of us to be in the room together, Justin wanted to make a live record. And he mentioned at the very beginning of it — his exact words were, 'I've never been this little prepared to start an album', which made me very excited." [1] To make the album sound more organic, Poppy and her band recorded it together live to tape. [16]

Flux received critical acclaim. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album has an average score of 80 out of 100, based on eight reviews. [18]
Neil Z. Yeung of AllMusic considered the album to be a "step forward for Poppy's songwriting" and called the album "[her most] authentic and earnest work." [14] Writing for Beats Per Minute , John Wohlmacher stated "Flux is the most direct and unfiltered of Pereira's projects so far. Where her...pop records have explored viral aspects of cultural cosplay, and I Disagree saw her playfully weave medleys that presented nu-metal crossovers with Japanese city pop and 60s psychedelia...Flux manages to highlight to the forgotten influence women had on rock and pop in the 90s..." [19] Shannon Garner of Clash praised the album's musical content and throwback to old sounds stating it is "a scintillating blend of 90s alt-rock and daring 2k21 elements". [10] Emma Swann of DIY praised the album and called it "a great rock album." [20]
Writing for Exclaim! , Rhys Juergensen stated, "[Poppy's] constant need for change — for flux — is, ironically, the very thing that gives her consistency. With this album, Poppy very clearly says that her new niche is to not have a niche. [21] Rhian Daly of The Forty-Five was positive towards the album and stated, "with sonic sugar rushes and eardrum assaults, Poppy's fourth album is the sound of her finding her feet through a big creative shift." [24] Kerrang! 's James Hickie stated that "Poppy triumphs on her deepest and most artistic album to date, Flux". [22] Red Dziri of The Line of Best Fit stated, "her latest album proves that there's simply no boxing her in – despite all the attempts by previous collaborators to keep her contained." [12]
Writing for NME , El Hunt described the album as "determined, fun-filled and perception-defying alt-rock". [8] Brad Sanders writing for Pitchfork stated, "Poppy’s albums have increasingly offered revealing glimpses of the woman behind the mask. Flux is her most unguarded work yet, and it's the closest we've come yet to meeting the real Poppy." [11] Paul Brown of Wall of Sound stated, "[this album proves] Poppy has well and truly earned her spot amongst the greats of the alternative scene." [23]

Pop-punk is a rock music fusion genre that combines elements of punk rock with power pop or pop. It is defined by its fast-paced, energetic tempos, and emphasis on classic pop songcraft, as well as adolescent and anti-suburbia themes. It is distinguished from other punk-variant genres by drawing more heavily from 1960s bands such as the Beatles, the Kinks, and the Beach Boys. The genre has evolved throughout its history, absorbing elements from new wave, college rock, ska, hip hop, emo, boy band pop and even hardcore punk. It is sometimes considered interchangeable with power pop and skate punk.
Horror punk is a music genre that mixes punk rock and 1950s-influenced doo-wop and rockabilly sounds with morbid and violent imagery and lyrics which are often influenced by horror films and science fiction B-movies. The genre was pioneered by the Misfits in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Subsequent bands formed in the Misfits' wake like Mourning Noise, the Undead and Samhain, solidifying horror punk's first wave. In the late 1990s and early 2000s the genre gained attention through the reunion of the Misfits and success of groups like AFI, Son of Sam and the Murderdolls. This popularity continued to the modern day with Blitzkid, Calabrese and Creeper.
Creeper are an English rock band from Southampton. Formed in 2014, the group originally featured vocalist Will Gould, guitarists Ian Miles and Sina Nemati, bassist Sean Scott, and drummer Dan Bratton. The band independently released their self-titled debut EP in 2014, before signing with Roadrunner Records and issuing follow-up The Callous Heart the next year. At the end of 2015, Nemati was replaced by Oliver Burdett and touring keyboardist/second vocalist Hannah Greenwood became an official band member. A third EP, The Stranger, was released in 2016 and reached the UK Rock & Metal Albums Chart top ten.
Justin Meldal-Johnsen is an American musician, record producer, songwriter and musical director. He is best known for his work with artists such as Beck, Nine Inch Nails, M83, Air, and St. Vincent.
Sumerian Records is an American record label based in Los Angeles, Washington D.C., and London. The label was founded in 2006 by Ash Avildsen. They have signed artists such as Crosses, Poppy, Bad Omens, Animals As Leaders, and I See Stars. In early 2022, Sumerian acquired Behemoth Entertainment, a comic book and video game publisher, in order to increase their merchandise options and further expand the brand.
Sleeping with Sirens is an American rock band from Orlando, Florida, currently residing in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The band currently consists of Kellin Quinn, touring lead guitarist Tony Pizzuti, Nick Martin, Justin Hills and Matty Best. The band was formed in 2009 by members of For All We Know and Paddock Park. The group is currently signed to Sumerian Records and have released seven full-length albums and an acoustic EP.

Ice Nine Kills is an American heavy metal band from Boston, Massachusetts, who are signed to Fearless Records. Best known for its horror-inspired lyrics, Ice Nine Kills formed in its earliest incarnation in 2000 by high school friends Spencer Charnas and Jeremy Schwartz. Paramore is the fourth studio album by the American rock band Paramore. It was released on April 5, 2013, through Fueled by Ramen as a follow-up to Brand New Eyes (2009). After Laughter is the fifth studio album by the American rock band Paramore. It was released on May 12, 2017, through Fueled by Ramen, as a follow-up to their 2013 self-titled album. After Laughter was produced by guitarist Taylor York alongside previous collaborator Justin Meldal-Johnsen. I Disagree is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Poppy. it was released on January 10, 2020, as her first album with Sumerian Records following her departure from Mad Decent, as well as her final collaborative project with Titanic Sinclair before the end of their creative partnership in 2019.
Wake Up, Sunshine is the eighth studio album by American rock band All Time Low. It was released on April 3, 2020, and is their second release with Fueled by Ramen following Last Young Renegade in 2017. The album's fourth and final single "Monsters" is the highest-charting song of their career.
Tickets to My Downfall is the fifth studio album by American musician Machine Gun Kelly. It was released on September 25, 2020, by Bad Boy Records and Interscope Records. Complete Collapse is the seventh studio album by American rock band Sleeping with Sirens. It was released on October 14, 2022, by Sumerian Records. It serves as a follow-up to their sixth studio album, How It Feels to Be Lost (2019). It is their first album to feature drummer Matty Best of Tonight Alive who replaced longtime drummer Gabe Barham. It is also their final album to feature longtime guitarist Jack Fowler, who departed the band early before the album's release.
