The European Qualifiers for the 1984 Summer Olympics tournament took place in 4 groups between 23 March 1983 and 22 April 1984. Reigning champions Czechoslovakia, as well as France, East Germany, Soviet Union and Yugoslavia gained qualification to the Olympic tournament. Czechoslovakia was replaced by Italy, East Germany was replaced by Norway and Soviet Union was replaced by West Germany.
The South American Pre-Olympic tournament was held over a total of two rounds from 8 to 21 February 1984 in Ecuador, Brazil and Chile, and saw Brazil and Chile qualify.
The CONCACAF qualifying rounds and Pre-Olympic tournament was held from 16 January 1983 to 25 April 1984, and saw Canada and Costa Rica qualify.

The association football (soccer) tournament at the 1984 Summer Olympics started on July 29 and ended on August 11, taking place throughout the United States. It was the first Olympic football competition in which officially professional players were allowed. Until then, the amateur-only rule had heavily favored socialist countries from the Eastern Bloc whose players were professionals in all but name. However, as agreed with FIFA to preserve the primacy of the World Cup, the Olympic competition was restricted to players with no more than five "A" caps at tournament start, regardless of age.

The Portugal national under-23 football team represents Portugal in international football competitions in Olympic Games, as well as in under–23 football tournaments. The selection is limited to players under the age of 23, except three over-age players. The team is controlled by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF). In three participations, Portugal's highest place was fourth, in 1996. This team also competed in the now-defunct Under-23 European Championship. The first time Portugal participated in the Olympic Football Tournament, they fielded main team players since the International Olympic Committee rules allowed to do so back then and in the 1980s, the team was composed of semi-professional players. The FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship is an international volleyball competition contested by the senior men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), the sport's global governing body. The initial gap between championships was variable, but since 1962 they were held every four years. The tournament will be held biannually starting in 2025.
