Franz Tost (born 20 January 1956 in Trins, Austria) is a former racing driver and the former team principal of the Scuderia AlphaTauri Formula One team, a role he departed from at the end of the 2023 Formula One season.

Early life

Tost competed as a driver in Formula Ford and Formula Three, winning the Austrian Formula Ford Championship in 1983. However, he felt that he was not skilled enough to get to the top of motorsport, so he decided to study Sport Science and Management at the University of Innsbruck and the University of Vienna. This landed him a job as team manager at the Walter Lechner Racing School. In 1993, he joined forces with Willi Weber, which initially led him to run the WTS Formula Three team. There, he met a young Ralf Schumacher and was asked by Willi Weber to accompany him to Japan. [1]

Formula One career

In 2000 Ralf Schumacher joined the Williams Formula 1 team. Tost followed him, working for Williams' engine supplier BMW as Track Operations Manager until 1 January 2006.

In 2005 Tost was appointed as the team principal of Scuderia Toro Rosso which was the new name of former team Minardi after Red Bull acquired the team. Tost stated that he would aim for fifth place in the Constructors' Championship. He achieved his best results with the team in 2008, 2019 and 2021 landing in the sixth spot in each of these seasons. He retained the role of team principal when Toro Rosso were re-christened as AlphaTauri at the beginning of the 2020 season. [3] Tost was one of the longest serving Formula One team principals of all time. [4]

Tost is often described as hard-working and professional. He is straightforward and not shy of sharing his opinion. [5]

On 26 April 2023, it was announced that Tost would be departing from his role as Team Principal at the end of the 2023 season. [6] Tost had spent 18 years in the role.

Criticism

Following the 2007 European Grand Prix, at the Nürburgring in Germany, it was alleged that Tost assaulted driver Scott Speed over an incident on the track. After Tost later denied the incident, Speed went to the press describing the acrimonious situation at the team, stating that "after coming out and denying this stuff, it's just another very dishonest thing that Franz or Gerhard [Berger] have said in the media to damage me and Tonio (Vitantonio Liuzzi)". Speed also stated that he did not want to race for Tost and Berger again. [7]

Scuderia Toro RossoSpA, commonly known as Toro Rosso or by its abbreviation STR, was an Italian Formula One constructor. It was one of two Formula One constructors owned by Austrian conglomerate company Red Bull, the other being Red Bull Racing. Toro Rosso functioned as a junior team to Red Bull Racing, with the aim of developing the skills of promising drivers for the senior team. The constructor made its racing début in the 2006 season, moving to complete independence from its sister team in 2010. The team changed its name to Scuderia AlphaTauri in 2020 to promote parent company Red Bull's fashion label of the same name.

The Scuderia Toro Rosso STR1 was the car with which the Scuderia Toro Rosso team competed in the 2006 Formula One season. It was driven by Vitantonio Liuzzi, who had started four Grands Prix for the sister Red Bull Racing team in 2005, and Scott Speed, a débutant who was the first American driver to compete in F1 since Michael Andretti in 1993. The STR1 was the first car from the Faenza-based team to use Michelin tyres since the Minardi PS02. The STR1 was also the first Toro Rosso F1 car to feature the mandatory 7-speed gearbox configuration. The STR1 was also the last Formula One car to utilize the 3.0 L V10 engine configuration to date, but with 16,700 rpm rev limiter and 77mm air restrictor.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Toro Rosso STR2</span> Formula One racing car

The Toro Rosso STR2 is the car with which the Scuderia Toro Rosso team competed in the 2007 Formula One season. It was unveiled on 13 February 2007 at the Circuit de Catalunya. The car is, controversially, a variant of the Red Bull RB3 chassis. It was initially driven by Vitantonio Liuzzi and Scott Speed, until Speed was replaced by Sebastian Vettel at the Hungaroring for the remainder of the season. The car in a modified form was also used to compete in the first five races of the 2008 Formula One season. The modified car was driven by Sébastien Bourdais, four-consecutive-time Champ Car winner, and Vettel. The STR2 was the first-ever Toro Rosso F1 car to use the mandatory 90-degree Formula One V8 engine configuration but Toro Rosso opted for the 2006-spec Ferrari 056 instead of the 2007-spec because of the 1-year old Toro Rosso customer engine policy and as a cost-saving measure.

Graham Watson is a Formula One mechanic and team manager. He is currently the team manager at the Scuderia AlphaTauri Formula One team. Though born and raised in New Zealand, Watson is an Italian citizen.
