This list presents the present and future strategic programs of the Brazilian Armed Forces that was based on the documents of the National Defense Strategy of 2008, and subsequent versions of the Defense White Paper that outline the major defense programs in Brazil from 2008 until 2040. [1]

Brazilian Army

Strategic Program of the Army Armored Forces

The program is coordinated by the Army High Command and is responsible for the modernization of the armored forces with a budget estimated at US$5.3 billion and 2,096 armored vehicles of different types planned. The following vehicles are set to be incorporated by 2040: [2]

UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters

In July 2024, the MoD authorized the purchase of 12 additional UH-60Ms, in a US$451 million plan. [10]

Brazilian Navy

In 2008, the presidents of Brazil and France, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Nicolas Sarkozy, signed a strategic partnership of US$10 billion to the construction of four conventionally-powered submarines, and the support for the development of the first Brazilian nuclear submarine Álvaro Alberto, in a program called Submarine Development Program. As of 2024, of the five units ordered, three was delivered. [11] [12] [13]

Tamandaré-class frigates

In 2020, the Brazilian government and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems signed a 2 billion contract for four frigates with the first unit delivered in 2024. A second batch of four more units was revealed by the Navy in 2024. [14] [15]

NPa-500MB

The NPa-500MB are a new class of offshore patrol vessels. Eigth units are planned with three in the mine countermeasures version. [16]

Brazilian Air Force

JAS 39 Gripen fighters

In 2014, 36 units were ordered in a US$5.4 billion plan. As of 2024, eight units was already delivered. [17] [18] [19]

KC-390 Millennium transport aircraft

In 2019, 19 units were ordered, as of 2024 six was delivered. [20] [21]

AMX replacement

The process of selection for a light attack jet to replace the older AMX is in course with the coordination of the MoD. As of July 2024, the air force evaluated the purchase of 24 General Dynamics F-16s from the US stocks, possibly Block 40/42, and the new Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master Block 20. Joint Staff of the Armed Forces

In 2008, the Brazilian government announced the purchase of 50 H225M units as part of a US$1 billion order to the armed forces. As of 2024, several units are in operation within the three branches, and continue to be incorporated to its services. [27] [28] [29]

Medium and High Altitude Air Defense Artillery System

The process of selection for a new longer and medium range surface-to-air missile system that will be joint operated by the three branches of the armed forces in conjunction with the CINDACTA system and other radars in operation is in course with the coordination of the Joint Staff of the Armed Forces. Two request for quotes was already launched by the Brazilian Army on the market in November 2023 and February 2024. [30]

The Brazilian Air Force is the air branch of the Brazilian Armed Forces and one of the three national uniformed services. The FAB was formed when the Army and Navy air branches were merged into a single military force initially called "National Air Forces" in 1941. Both air branches transferred their equipments, installations and personnel to the new force.

The Brazilian Army is the branch of the Brazilian Armed Forces responsible, externally, for defending the country in eminently terrestrial operations and, internally, for guaranteeing law, order and the constitutional branches, subordinating itself, in the Federal Government's structure, to the Ministry of Defense, alongside the Brazilian Navy and Air Force. The Military Police and Military Firefighters Corps are legally designated as reserve and auxiliary forces to the army. Its operational arm is called Land Force. It is the largest army in South America and the largest branch of the Armed Forces of Brazil.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Iveco LMV</span> Italian infantry mobility vehicle

The Iveco LMV is a 4WD tactical vehicle developed by Iveco, and in service with several countries. After its adoption by the Italian Army as the Veicolo-Tattico-Leggero-Multiruolo (VTLM) Lince, it won the Future Command and Liaison Vehicle (FCLV) competition of the British Army as the Panther, but the fleet was put up for sale in 2018.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">MSS-1.2</span> Brazilian anti-tank guided missile

The MSS 1.2 AC is a Brazilian anti-tank guided missile (ATGM). Operated by infantry or vehicles, the system consists of a reloadable launch tube, laser-guided missile and firing unit, as well as a simulator and testing equipment. It was developed out of Oto Melara's “Missile Anti-Carro della Fanteria”, which was rejected by the Italian Army. Brazilian involvement began in 1986 and it has since then been tested and redesigned by the Brazilian Army's research institutes and a series of Brazilian companies.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">VBTP-MR Guarani</span> Amphibious wheeled Armoured personnel carrier

The VBTP-MR Guarani is a 6×6 armoured personnel carrier developed by Iveco and the Brazilian Army as part of its "Urutu-III" modernization program aimed to replace all EE-11 Urutu by 2015. The 8×8 version of the VBTP-MR is the base of Iveco's Superav armoured personnel carrier. Other Brazilian companies also participated in the program, such as IMBEL (Communications), Elbit (Armaments), Usiminas and Villares.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Intervention Brigade (Portugal)</span> Military unit

The Intervention Brigade or BrigInt is an infantry brigade in service with the Portuguese Army. It was created in 2006 from the Light Intervention Brigade, which was itself the heir of the former Special Forces Brigade.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Joint Staff of the Armed Forces</span>

The Chief of the Joint General Staff of the Armed Forces is the professional head of the Brazilian Armed Forces, who is responsible for the centralizes the coordination and control of the three branches: Army, Navy and Air Force. The position was created through the Complementary Law No. 136 of 25 August 2010, and is guided by Ordinance No. 1429.

<i>Tamandaré</i>-class frigate Brazilian frigate class

The Tamandaré class is a class of stealth frigates operated by the Brazilian Navy, based on the MEKO family of warships. The project was developed by the Águas Azuis consortium, composed of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and Embraer Defense & Security.

Brazilian frigate <i>Liberal</i> Niterói-class Frigates

F Liberal (F-43) is a Niterói-class frigate of the Brazilian Navy. She was the fourth ship of her class ordered by the Brazilian Navy, on 20 September 1970. Liberal was launched on 7 February 1977, and was commissioned on 18 November 1978.

Anápolis Air Force Base – ALA2 is a base of the Brazilian Air Force, located in Anápolis, Brazil.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aerospace Operations Command</span> Brazilian space command

The Aerospace Operations Command is a joint command of the Brazilian Armed Forces in charge of planning, coordinating and conducting the employment of aerospace assets. Although part of the Brazilian Air Force's structure, it includes personnel from the Brazilian Army and Navy. COMAE is the central body in the Brazilian Aerospace Defense System and as such, it is directly responsible for the aerospace defense of Brazilian territory and may control Air Force, Army and Navy units.

The Link-BR2 is a Brazilian military datalink developed by the Brazilian Air Force and the defence company AEL Sistemas. The system entered in operation in December 2020, and was conceived in the early-2010s, by the necessity of Armed Forces of a communication system to the exchange of information between all military of the country.

Saab Sensores e Serviços Brasil is a Brazilian defence electronic manufacturer which has operated since 2020 as a subsidiary company of the Saab AB. Previously established in 2004 as Atmos Sistemas S.A to provide electronic equipment and weather radars, it was bought entirely by the Swedish multinational to manufacture and sell electronic products and avionics for the aerospace industry, and to supply the parts and maintenance needs of the Saab JAS 39 Gripen aircraft of the Brazilian Air Force.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Brazilian cavalry</span> Military unit

The Brazilian cavalry is one of the branches that make up the Brazilian Army. It operates in armored vehicles and, like the infantry, has the role of directly confronting the enemy, but with distinct missions such as reconnaissance and vanguard. It is organized into regiments and squadrons, which are equivalent to the infantry's battalions and companies. Its main types are tank, mechanized, armored and guard. Its troops serve in vehicle crews or as fusiliers on board, who can also fight on foot.
