Tantepudi George Cornelious (born 18 April 1961) [1] is the current Bishop - in - Krishna Godavari Diocese [3] of the Church of South India with the Bishop's Cathedra housed in CSI-St. Andrew's Cathedral in Machilipatnam. However, for administrative purposes, the Office of the Bishopric is located in Vijayawada [3] with its ecclesiastical jurisdiction encompassing the civil districts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Krishna, and Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

George Cornelious has the responsibility of overseeing a Church that comprises faithful who are spread across the Northern Circars of Andhra Pradesh, which owes its existence to then mission societies comprising the London Missionary Society and the Church Missionary Society which grounded their mission stations in Visakhapatnam and Machilipatnam, respectively, in the 19th century, [4] that since got unionized into the Church of South India in 1947. The geographical area also comprises the Roman Catholics, the other Protestants and a host of new and indigenous Churches and the Bishop also has the additional burden of fostering ecumenism.

Spiritual formation

After initial studies leading to sciences, George Cornelious discerned his avocation in the 1990s and chose to become a Priest and then Bishop, T. B. D. Prakasa Rao, CSI, became his Spiritual Confessor and guided his spiritual formation and sent him to the Protestant Regional Theologiate in Secunderabad which had been known for its scholarship in Biblical studies with past faculty of the 1970s that comprised Victor Premasagar, CSI, K. David, [5] CBCNC, Gaddala Solomon, STBC and Suppogu Joseph, STBC.

George Cornelious began his theological studies studying for a Bachelor of Divinity for the period 1990-1993 [2] as a ministerial candidate of the Krishna Godavari diocese and began his spiritual formation at the Protestant Regional Theologiate - the near-ecumenical Andhra Christian Theological College in Secunderabad, affiliated to India's first [6] University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) {a University under Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956} [7] with degree-granting authority validated by a Danish Charter and ratified by the Government of West Bengal.

Cornelious studied at the Seminary under Spiritual Formators comprising M. Victor Paul, AELC, Regunta Yesurathnam, CSI, G. T. Abraham, CSI and others. The Old Testament faculty comprised G. Babu Rao, [8] CBCNC and N. V. Luther Paul, AELC. [9] There were also international scholars available at the Seminary from Germany and Canada consisting Klaus Schäfer, [10] Dr. Theol. (Hamburg) and Ray Waldock, [11] Ph. D. (Montreal). [12]

After a three-year study period, George Cornelious was awarded a B. D. in the ensuing convocation of the Senate of Serampore College (University) by then Registrar, D. S. Satyaranjan, IPC.

Ordination and ministry

After spiritual formation in Secunderabad, then Bishop, T. B. D. Prakasa Rao, CSI, ordained George Cornelious as Deacon on 16 June 1998 after which he began his ministry in the Krishna Godavari Diocese and after a gap of one year, he was finally ordained as a Priest on 30 November 1999. [1]

Bishopric

In early 2018 when G. Dyvasirvadam relinquished [13] the Cathedra on attaining extended [14] superannuation, the Diocese was left Sede vacante following which the Church of South India Synod supervised elections to the Diocese and George Cornelious who was in the fray for the bishopric was elected and consecrated on 29 May 2018 [15] at CSI-St. Andrews's Cathedral, Machilipatnam by Moderator Thomas K Oommen, CSI the Principal Consecrator and V. Prasada Rao, CSI, Co-consecrator in the presence Bishops of the other diocese and a host of clergy comprising Daniel Sadananda, CSI, General Secretary of the Synod. [15]

Andhra Christian Theological College (ACTC) is a seminary in Telangana which was founded in 1964. Bishop T. B. D. Prakasa Rao was the fourth CSI-Bishop - in - Krishna-Godavari of the Protestant Church of South India who occupied the Cathedra placed at CSI-St. Paul's Cathedral, Vijayawada. The Bishopric of Prakasa Rao lasted for two decades from 1981 through 2001, one of the longest in the history of the Church of South India Society. Prakasa Rao led the bishopric of Krishna-Godavari that comprised the Christian missions established by the London Missionary Society (LMS) and the Church Missionary Society (CMS) which merged its South India Christian missions in India into the Church of South India Society which was inaugurated in 1947 at the CSI-St. George's Cathedral, Madras.

Ryder Devapriam was systematic theologian who taught during the 1960s and the 1970s at the Andhra Christian Theological College, a Protestant Regional Theologiate in Secunderabad, affiliated to the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University) {a University under Section 2 (f) of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956}with degree-granting authority validated by a Danish Charter and ratified by the Government of West Bengal.

G. T. Abraham was Bishop - in - Diocese of Nandyal of the Church of South India. He also taught Christian Ministry at the Andhra Christian Theological College. Hyderabad

<span class="mw-page-title-main">K. Reuben Mark</span>

The Right Reverend K. Reuben Mark is the present Bishop in Karimnagar and the sixth in succession and occupies the Cathedra of the Bishop placed in Karimnagar's CSI-Wesley Cathedral. Reuben Mark is currently a Council Member for the period 2015–2018 at the fully-ecumenical United Theological College, Bangalore. During the XXXVIth session of Church of South India Synod, Reuben Mark has been elected as Deputy Moderator for the triennium 2020-2023 succeeding V. Prasada Rao.

Bishop Babbili Prabhudass(died 1996) was the first elected Bishop - in - Karimnagar Diocese of the Church of South India which was ecclesiastically bifurcated from the Diocese of Dornakal of the Church of South India in early 1978. Prabhudass led the bishopric for a period of five years from 1978 through 1982.

V. Prasada Rao was the eighth Bishop - in - Dornakal Diocese of the Church of South India who was principally consecrated on 12 June 2012 by then Moderator, G. Devakadasham and co-consecrated by then Deputy Moderator, G. Dyvasirvadam of the Church of South India Synod at the CSI-Epiphany Cathedral, Dornakal. During the Synod of 2017, Prasada Rao also served as the Deputy Moderator of the Synod for the triennium 2017-2019.

Bishop B. D. Prasada Rao(born 13.8.1952) is Bishop Emeritus - in - Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India and past ex officio member of the Church of South India Synod for the period 2013-2019. He retired on attaining superannuation on 13 August 2019.

Dharmakkan Dhanaraj was an Indian Old Testament Scholar who taught at the Karnataka Theological College, Mangalore, a Seminary established in 1965 and affiliated to the nation's first University, the Senate of Serampore College (University).

G. D. V. Prasad is an Old Testament scholar and translator who was the Director of Translations at the Bible Society of India, Bangalore, from 1991 to 2010. Prasad is from the Diocese of Krishna-Godavari of the Church of South India.

A. C. Solomon Raj is the seventh successor of Frank Whittaker and eighth Bishop in Medak of the Protestant Church of South India Society and shepherds the Diocese from the Cathedra of the Bishop housed in the CSI-Medak Cathedral in Medak Town, Telangana, India. On 12 October 2016, the Church of South India Synod headquartered in Chennai, appointed Solomon Raj to assume the ecclesiastical Office of the Bishopric of Medak and was consecrated the next day on 13 October 2016 at the CSI-St. George's Cathedral, Chennai, ending four years of sede vacante in the Diocese of Medak which was without a bishop during the intervening period of 2012–2016.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Gaddala Solomon</span>

G. Solomon was an Old Testament Scholar and a Baptist Patriarch hailing from the Protestant Samavesam of Telugu Baptist Churches Society (an affiliate member of the Baptist World Alliance and the National Council of Churches in India) and led it as its President during the years 1978-1982 overseeing the spiritual affairs of the Church Society whose ecclesiastical jurisdiction comprises the three states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana with 873 Churches comprising nearly a million members per present statistics.

M. S. G. Lalitha Kumari a.k.a. Lalitha Krupa Rao was the eighth Principal of Eva Rose York Bible Training and Technical School for Women, Tuni. She held the term from 1993 through 2011. Lalitha was a theologically trained woman who also used to pastor a Church. With her ordination in 1992, she became the first Woman priest in the Protestant Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars.

Bishop P. I. Vara Prasad(born 8.10.1962) is a silver jubilee Priest and current Bishop - in - Rayalaseema Diocese of the Church of South India. Ever since his ordination as Deacon/Presbyter in 1993 by then Bishop L. V. Azariah, he began his career as a Priest in Churches within ecclesiastical jurisdiction of CSI-Diocese of Rayalaseema that comprise parts of civil states of Andhra Pradesh and Telugu-speaking parts of Tamil Nadu. Vara Prasad is well versed in conducting Mass, following Presbyterian, Congregational and Anglican rites.

Perapogu Joseph was a military chaplain in the Indian Army Corps of EME and a counselor who taught students in Serampore College, Serampore and Andhra Christian Theological College, Secunderabad.
