Ghani Glass cricket team is a departmental cricket team in Pakistan, that plays first-class cricket in the President's Trophy. The team is sponsored by Ghani Glass and owned by Ghani Group of Companies. [1] The team does not have any geographical base. [2] It is currently being captained by Shan Masood.

History

The team was founded in 2017 to take part in the Grade II of 2016–17 Patron's Trophy. [3] In May 2019, Pakistan's Prime Minister Imran Khan revamped the domestic cricket structure in Pakistan, excluding departmental teams in favour of regional sides, therefore ending the participation of the team. [4] The team was refounded in March 2023 after a revamp of the domestic structure. [5] [6] In December 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Ghani Glass would be one of the teams to participate in the 2023–24 President's Trophy. [7] The team made their first-class debut on 16 December 2023, drawing the match against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited. [8] This was the first time for Ghani Glass to compete in a first-class tournament in Pakistan. [9]

The history of cricket in Pakistan predates the creation of the country in 1947. The first international cricket match in what is now Pakistan today was held in Karachi on 22 November 1935 between Sindh and Australia. The match was seen by 5,000 Karachiites. Shan Masood Khan, also spelled as Shaan Masood, is a Pakistani international cricketer and the current captain of the Pakistan Test cricket team. He plays for, and is the captain of, Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Karachi Kings. He is a left-handed batsman and an occasional right-arm medium-fast bowler.

Imran Butt is a Pakistani cricketer who plays for Lahore Blues in domestic cricket. He made his debut for the Pakistan cricket team in January 2021. He also played for other Lahore cricket teams and Balochistan in Pakistan domestic cricket.

The 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition that took place in Pakistan from 14 September to 31 December 2019. Habib Bank Limited were the defending champions. However, after the new domestic structure was announced by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), six newly formed regional teams played in the tournament.

The 2020–21 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition that took place in Karachi, Pakistan, from 25 October 2020 to 5 January 2021. Central Punjab cricket team were the defending champions. Central Punjab started their title defence poorly, with no wins from their first five matches. Despite being bottom in the table at the half-way point of the tournament, they won four of the next five matches to finish second in the table, advancing to the final with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The 2023–24 President's Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition played in Pakistan. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played from 16 December 2023 to 31 January 2024, however, the final was later rescheduled to begin on 6 February 2024. The final was rescheduled a second time to 9 February and moved from Karachi to Rawalpindi. It was played by seven departmental teams, across three venues in Karachi and one venue in Rawalpindi. In December 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the fixtures for the tournament. It marked the return of departmental cricket in Pakistan since the 2018–19 season. Although eight teams were originally scheduled to participate, Sui Southern Gas Company pulled out of the tournament.

Higher Education Commission cricket team is a departmental cricket team in Pakistan, that plays first-class cricket in the President's Trophy. The team is sponsored and owned by Higher Education Commission. The team does not have any geographical base. It is currently being captained by Mohammad Huraira.
