Higher Education Commission cricket team is a departmental cricket team in Pakistan, that plays first-class cricket in the President's Trophy. The team is sponsored and owned by Higher Education Commission. [1] The team does not have any geographical base. [2] It is currently being captained by Mohammad Huraira.

History

The team was founded in 2003 to take part in the 2003 Inter Departmental Qualifying Tournament. [3] In May 2019, Pakistan's prime minister Imran Khan revamped the domestic cricket structure in Pakistan, excluding departmental teams in favour of regional sides, therefore ending the participation of the team. [4] The team was refounded in March 2023 after a revamp of the domestic structure. [5] [6] In December 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed that Higher Education Commission would be one of the teams to participate in the 2023–24 President's Trophy. [7] The team made their first-class debut on 22 December 2023, losing the match against Water and Power Development Authority. [8] This was the first time for Higher Education Commission to compete in a major domestic tournament in Pakistan. [9]

The history of cricket in Pakistan predates the creation of the country in 1947. The first international cricket match in what is now Pakistan today was held in Karachi on 22 November 1935 between Sindh and Australia. The match was seen by 5,000 Karachiites. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) cricket team is a first-class cricket side in Pakistan that plays in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Patron's Trophy, Pentangular Trophy and also competes in limited-overs cricket.

Pakistan Television cricket team is a first-class cricket team sponsored by the Pakistan Television Corporation. They began competing in Pakistan's first-class, List A and Twenty20 tournaments in the 2010–11 season.

Sui Southern Gas Company were a first-class cricket team, sponsored by Sui Southern Gas Company, who played in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in Pakistan from 2007–08 to 2009–10, and from 2014–15 to 2018–19. Mohammad Imran Khan is a Pakistani cricketer, born in Maidan valley of Lower Dir in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. He made his Test match debut for Pakistan against Australia in the United Arab Emirates on 22 October 2014. Imran has played domestically for Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Water and Power Development Authority, the National Bank of Pakistan, Zarai Taraqiati Bank, and the Peshawar Panthers.

The Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited cricket team, formerly known as Agriculture Development Bank of Pakistan cricket team, was a first-class cricket side in Pakistan. It was sponsored by the Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited. The 2019–20 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition that took place in Pakistan from 14 September to 31 December 2019. Habib Bank Limited were the defending champions. However, after the new domestic structure was announced by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), six newly formed regional teams played in the tournament.

The 2020–21 Pakistan Cup was a List A cricket competition that took place in Karachi, Pakistan from 8 January to 31 January 2021. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were the defending champions after they beat Baluchistan. However, after the new domestic structure announced by Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), six newly formed regional teams were formed.

The 2021–22 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition that took place in Pakistan from 20 October to 29 December 2021. In September 2021, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the fixtures for the tournament, with the full schedule being announced the following month. Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were the defending champions, after the final of the previous tournament finished in a tie.

The 2022–23 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition that took place in Pakistan from 27 September to 30 November 2022. In September 2022, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the fixtures for the tournament. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were the defending champions but did not qualify for the final.

The 2023–24 President's Trophy was a first-class domestic cricket competition played in Pakistan. The tournament was originally scheduled to be played from 16 December 2023 to 31 January 2024, however, the final was later rescheduled to begin on 6 February 2024. The final was rescheduled a second time to 9 February and moved from Karachi to Rawalpindi. It was played by seven departmental teams, across three venues in Karachi and one venue in Rawalpindi. In December 2023, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed the fixtures for the tournament. It marked the return of departmental cricket in Pakistan since the 2018–19 season. Although eight teams were originally scheduled to participate, Sui Southern Gas Company pulled out of the tournament.

Ghani Glass cricket team is a departmental cricket team in Pakistan, that plays first-class cricket in the President's Trophy. The team is sponsored by Ghani Glass and owned by Ghani Group of Companies. The team does not have any geographical base. It is currently being captained by Shan Masood.
