The Global Baseball Games, billed as the Carnext Samurai Japan Series for sponsorship purposes, [1] are an international exhibition baseball series played between Samurai Japan and a team of European All-Stars. The series is typically played in Japan in the same year as the WBSC Premier12 tournament.

Contents

The first edition of the series was played in 2015, then known as the Global Baseball Match, and was the debut of Team Europe in international competition. [2] [3] The next edition was played in 2024, at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka. [4] In the second game, six Japanese pitchers combined to throw a perfect game. [5]

The winning team is awarded the World Baseball Classic Championship Trophy. It is one of the two main senior baseball tournaments sanctioned by the WBSC, alongside the WBSC Premier12, but is the only one to grant the winner the title of "world champion".

The Cuba national baseball team represents Cuba at regional and international levels. The team is made up from the most professional players from the Cuban national baseball system. The team tried but failed to qualify for the 2020 Olympics at the eight-team Americas Qualifying Event on May 31 through June 5, 2021.

Previous editions were sanctioned by the International Softball Federation, which governed the sport until its 2013 merger with the International Baseball Federation to create the WBSC. As the winners, the United States earned the right to compete at the 2020 Summer Olympics. It was the last world title awarded under the championship format before the WBSC implemented the new world cup 4 year cycle.
