Gottesman Libraries

The Gottesman Libraries is located in Russell Hall at Teachers College, Columbia University at 525 West 120th Street, and is the sole library of Teachers College graduate school. It is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive research libraries in education, and the scope of its collections reflect the historic commitment to advanced study in education, psychology, and the health professions in their local, national, and international dimensions. [1] Its standard opening hours are Monday through Thursday 8 am to 11 pm, Friday 8 am to 7 pm, Saturday 12 pm to 7 pm, and Sunday 12 pm to 11 pm. [2] The library provides numerous services in support of the learning, teaching, and research needs of its members and affiliated members, including online and in-person support; chat or real-time transmission of text messages; course readings integrated with the library services platform and College's learning management system; sponsored events; exhibits and displays; instructional offerings and research consultations; the Library Blog; and live musical performances. Automated acquisitions, interlibrary loan, printing, scanning, kiosks and monitors; and room booking services are available. Historical collections focus on pedagogical research, curriculum and children's literature, and institutional history and are integrated into EDUCAT+, the library's online catalog, powered by Primo VE. In 2001 the library received a $6.5 million gift from Professor Ruth Gottesman, to establish 'the Library of the Future'. [4] A dedication ceremony was held on November 4, 2004. [5] Previously the library of Teachers College was known as Milbank Memorial Library, named after Thomas Milbank and dedicated as such in 1982. [6] Before moving to Russell Hall in 1924, where it occupied four floors and the tower, it was located at 9 University Place, and known as the Bryson Library, named after Mrs. Peter M. Bryson. [6]

Galleries

The Gottesman Libraries features two art galleries; The Kasser Exhibition Space [7] in the entrance of the first floor, and the Offit Family Gallery, [8] [9] on the third floor, located past the large reading room. In addition to these spaces, there is an exhibit area on the second floor, known for its congenial, collaborative setting, and the library has hosted art and exhibits in additional locations, including the Everett Cafe, also situated close to the entrance.

Smith Learning Theater

The Smith Learning Theater is housed on the 4th floor of the Gottesman Libraries, and it is under the direction of the Digital Futures Institute to facilitate ambitious teaching and learning opportunities. The Smith Learning Theater was made possible by an $8 million gift from George and Camilla Smith, which allowed for the renovation of the 4th floor of the Gottesman Libraries, in order to create an "experimental and demonstration space" for Teachers College students and faculty. [10] Architect firm Shepley Bulfinch, having executed prior renovations at the Gottesman Libraries, were responsible for the design, [11] allowing research into new ways of teaching. [12]

It is one of the oldest architecture firms in continuous practice in the United States, and was recognized by the American Institute of Architects with its highest honor, the AIA Architecture Firm Award, in 1973.

The Peninsula campus of Monash University is Monash's third-largest campus, with close to 4000 students and almost 300 staff. The campus is located at the "Gateway to the Mornington Peninsula", in the Bayside suburb of Frankston. It continues to specialise in its historical strengths of health and early childhood education. Monash teaching in primary education, nursing and physiotherapy are all based at Peninsula Campus. The campus offers programs from undergraduate through to PhD level. Susan Harriet Fuhrman is an American education policy scholar and served from 2006 as the first female president of Teachers College, Columbia University. Fuhrman earned her doctorate in Political Science and Education from Columbia University. She became very engaged in issues of educational equity and emerged as an authority on school reform. Fuhrman is known for her early and ongoing critical analysis of the standards movement and for her efforts to foster research that provides a scientific basis for effective teaching.

Teachers College Record is a monthly peer-reviewed academic journal of education that was established in 1900. It is published by EdLab at Teachers College, Columbia University. The journal also "pre-publishes" papers online, and curates special online issues with the aim of building a weekly audience by utilizing online technologies in order to increase relevancy and reduce publication lag.

The library system of Tufts University supports all academic departments comprising the university, located in Greater Boston in the U.S. state of Massachusetts. The main library is Tisch Library, which holds about 2.5 million volumes, with other holdings dispersed at subject libraries.

Erica Nicole Walker is an American mathematician and the Clifford Brewster Upton Professor of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, Columbia University, where she also serves as the Chairperson of the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology and as the Director of the Institute for Urban and Minority Education. Walker’s research focuses on the "social and cultural factors as well as educational policies and practices that facilitate mathematics engagement, learning and performance, especially for underserved students".

Teachers College Reading and Writing Project was founded and directed by Lucy Calkins, The Robinson Professor of Children's Literature at Teachers College, Columbia University. Its mission was to help young people become avid and skilled readers, writers, and inquirers through research, curriculum development, and in-school professional development. TCRWP developed methods and tools for the teaching of reading and writing through research, curriculum development published through Heinemann, and professional development with teachers and school leaders. TCRWP supported the Reading Workshop and Writers Workshop approaches through its Units of Study curriculum. The project involved thousands of schools and teachers in New York and around the country in an ongoing, multi-faceted in-service community of practitioners engaged in the application and continual refinement of approaches to helping children become effective writers and readers.

The Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine, located in Houston, Texas, is the graduate medical school of the University of Houston. The school enrolled its first class of 30 students in 2020.

Angela Marie Calabrese Barton is an American professor of teacher education. She is a Full professor at the University of Michigan and co-founder of Green Energy Technology (GET) City program.
