HMS Urgent was an iron screw troopship of the Royal Navy. She served her later years as a storeship and depot ship based in Jamaica.
Urgent was originally constructed by C. J. Mare, of Blackwall, under the name Assaye. Also being constructed by Mare at this time was a near-sistership to Assaye, the Russian Sobraon. Assaye may have also been being built for Russian owners, as both ships were purchased by the Admiralty in 1854 to serve as auxiliaries in the Crimean War. Assaye was purchased under an Admiralty order dated 13 June 1854, and was launched on 2 April 1855. She completed fitting out for sea at Sheerness Dockyard on 29 September 1855, having by then cost a total of £89,936. She entered service as HMS Urgent, while her near-sister Sobraon was named HMS Perseverance.
On 21 October 1855, Urgent ran aground at Fort Ricasoli, Malta on a voyage from Plymouth, Devon. All 1,100 people on board were rescued. [2] Having departed from Spithead on 28 February 1857, Urgent sprang a leak in the Bay of Biscay on 3 March. She put in to A Coruña, Spain in a sinking condition. [3] On 1 November 1858, Urgent ran aground on the East Pole Sands, 6 nautical miles (11 km) east of the Nab Lightship whilst on a voyage from Corfu, United States of the Ionian Islands to Portsmouth. She was refloated with assistance from the Government tug Echo. [4] From March 1859 she was under the command of Henry William Hire for service in the East Indies and China, and on 20 August 1859 was on the Hai River. [5] From July 1864 she was under Samuel Hood Henderson. [5] In August 1864, she ran aground at St. Anns, Nova Scotia, British North America. She was later refloated and taken in to Quebec City, Province of Canada, British North America, where she arrived on 5 September. [6] Urgent was at Portsmouth in 1870. [5]
After service as a troopship, Urgent was moved to Jamaica and to serve as a depot ship, and was commissioned there in her new role on 21 July 1877. [7]
In 1880, her tender was the gunboat HMS Tyrian, which was also used as a tug. [8] From 1880 to 1885, her tender was the schooner HMS Sparrowhawk, which was surveying the area at the time. [9] From February 1878 until 1890 Urgent flew the broad pendant of the Hon. William John Ward, the son of Edward Southwell Ward, 3rd Viscount Bangor. In 1886 Urgent came under the command of Francis Mowbray Prattent, and between September 1889 and 1890 she flew the broad pendant of Rodney Maclaine Lloyd. [5] She finally flew the broad pendant of Daniel M K Riddel from March 1901. [5]
She was sold for scrapping to Butler & Co in June 1903, after the naval establishment was moved ashore. [7]
HMS Euryalus was a fourth-rate wooden-hulled screw frigate of the Royal Navy, with a 400-horsepower (300 kW) steam engine that could make over 12 knots. She was launched at Chatham in 1853, was 212 feet long, displaced 3,125 tons and had a complement of 515. At the time of the Bombardment of Kagoshima she carried 35 guns, not counting approximately 16 carronades. Seventeen of her guns were breech-loading Armstrong guns. She carried 230 tons of coal, and provisions for about three months, together with over 70 tons of shot and shell.
HMS Gorgon was a wooden steam paddle sloop of 6 guns, launched in 1837. In 1840 she took part in the bombardment of Acre, and in 1843 was part of the Royal Navy squadron stationed in the River Plate during the Uruguayan Civil War. She was converted to a troopship and in 1858 assisted Agamemnon in the laying of the first transatlantic telegraph cable. She was sold for breaking in 1864.

HMS Valeur was a 28-gun sixth-rate frigate of the Royal Navy, initially launched in 1754 as the Valeur for the French Navy, and classified by them as a corvette. The British captured her in 1759. In Royal Navy service she captured several merchant vessels and privateers before she was sold in 1764.
HMS Primrose was a Royal Navy Cruizer-class brig-sloop built by Thomas Nickells, at Fowey and launched in 1807.

HMS Firebrand was a wooden paddle vessel launched in 1831. She was rebuilt in 1843, renamed HMS Black Eagle and employed as an Admiralty steam yacht. She was broken up in 1876.
HMS Vulcan was an intended iron-hulled screw frigate of the British Royal Navy, ordered from Ditchburn & Mare, Blackwall, London on 4 March 1845, to the shipbuilder's design, and had her keel laid on 12 March 1846. Measuring 1,747 tons burthen she had 14 gunports, was fitted with fore, main and mizzen masts, a funnel, a stump bowsprit, and a figurehead depicting a male figure holding a hammer. Following a trial on a target representing the side of the ship, it was decided that iron vessels were unsuitable for war purposes and, on 23 April 1847, Vulcan was ordered to be completed as a transport, with capacity for 677 troops. She was launched on 27 January 1849, and eventually completed on 3 March 1851. Vulcan was sold in 1867 as the barque Jorawur.
HMS Grinder was a wooden 3-gun Dapper-class gunboat, launched on 7 March 1855. Although she served for nine years, her most active period was in her first year when she served in the Crimean War.
The French frigate Alcmène was an Armide-class frigate of a nominal 44 guns, launched in 1811. The British captured her on 1814. The Royal Navy named her HMS Dunira, and then renamed her HMS Immortalite but never commissioned her nor fitted her for sea. In March 1822 she became a receiving ship at Portsmouth. She was sold in January 1837.
Three, and possibly five, vessels of the Royal Navy have borne the name HMS Sultana, for a female sultan or wife of a sultan:
HMS Ems was a Dutch schuyt that the Royal Navy captured in 1809. She was the only vessel of her name to serve in the Royal Navy. No vessel by that name appears in Colledge & Barlow (2006).
HMS Poulette was the French privateer Foudroyant, built and launched at Bordeaux, France in 1798. The Royal Navy captured her in 1799. The British did not commission her until 1803. She was laid up in 1805 and finally sold in 1814.
HMS Recruit was a Clydebank three-funnel, 30-knot destroyer ordered by the Royal Navy under the 1895–1896 Naval Estimates. She was the fifth ship to carry this name since it was introduced in 1806 for an 18-gun brig-sloop, sold in 1822.
HMS Tyne was a Royal Navy store ship. Charles Mitchell of Low Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne built her as yard number 354, and launched her on 19 January 1878 as the merchant ship Mariotis for the Moss Steam Ship Company of Liverpool. The Admiralty bought her for the Royal Navy on 8 March 1878. She was completed in June 1878.
The French gun-vessel Eclair was one of 20 chasse-marées built in 1785 in southern Brittany for use as service craft in harbour construction at Cherbourg. In 1793 Martin or Jacques Fabien converted ten of them into chaloupes-canonnières (gun-vessels). One of these received the name Eclair. Sir Richard Strachan's squadron captured her in 1795 in Cartaret Bay, and the Royal Navy took her into service as HMS Eclair. She then sailed to the West Indies where she was probably out of service by 1801. In 1802 she was hulked under the name HMS Safety. She then served as a prison ship at Jamaica around 1808 to 1810. She may have been sold at Tortola in 1817/18, but in 1841 or so was brought back into service there as a receiving hulk. She was broken up in 1879.
HMS Janus was the Dutch fifth-rate Argo, built at the dockyard of the Amsterdam Admiralty, and launched in 1790. HMS Phoenix captured her on 12 May 1796. The British Royal Navy took her into service as HMS Janus. She was a receiving ship by 1798 and in Ordinary by 1807. The Navy sold her in 1811.
Several ships have served the Royal Navy under the name HMS Integrity.
HMS Berbice was the French privateer Berbice that the British Royal Navy captured in 1793 and took into service under her existing name. She ran aground three years later.
