An aviation accident is defined by the Convention on International Civil Aviation Annex 13 as an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft,which takes place from the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight until all such persons have disembarked,and in which (a) a person is fatally or seriously injured,(b) the aircraft sustains significant damage or structural failure,or (c) the aircraft goes missing or becomes completely inaccessible. Annex 13 defines an aviation incident as an occurrence,other than an accident,associated with the operation of an aircraft that affects or could affect the safety of operation.

On 22 October 2005,the aircraft nose-dived and crashed at high speed just a few minutes after take-off,killing all 117 people on board.
Sosoliso Airlines Flight 1145(SO1145/OSL1145) was a scheduled Nigerian domestic passenger flight from Nigeria's capital of Abuja (ABV) to Port Harcourt (PHC). At about 14:08 local time on 10 December 2005,Flight 1145 from Abuja crash-landed at Port Harcourt International Airport. The aircraft,a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32 with 110 people on board,slammed into the ground and burst into flames. Immediately after the crash,seven survivors were recovered and taken to hospitals,but only two people survived.

James Spriggs Payne Airport is an airport located 5 kilometres (3 mi) from downtown Monrovia,the capital of the Republic of Liberia in West Africa. The airfield is located within the busy and thickly settled Sinkor section of the city,and is therefore convenient to the business and political districts of the capital. Whereas Roberts International Airport is the primary aviation facility for the city and indeed the entire country,Spriggs-Payne has the only other paved runway in Liberia and once had the only other international commercial flights into and out of Liberia. The airport is named after James Spriggs Payne who was president of the Republic of Liberia in 1868–70 and again in 1876–78.
West African Airways Corporation,or WAAC for short,was an airline that operated from 1946 to 1958,jointly owned by the governments of Britain's four west African colonies,namely The Gambia,the Gold Coast,Nigeria,and Sierra Leone. The carrier was headquartered at the Airways House in Ikeja,Nigeria,and operated from its hub in Lagos Airport. It was dissolved on 30 September 1958,after all the shareholder countries but Nigeria set up their own national airlines following their independence. As the sole remaining major stockholder of the airline,the government of Nigeria continued to operate it as WAAC Nigeria,which was eventually renamed Nigeria Airways and became the flag carrier of the country.

Dana Air Flight 0992 was a scheduled Nigerian domestic passenger flight from Abuja to Lagos,Nigeria. On 3 June 2012,the McDonnell Douglas MD-83 aircraft serving the route suffered a dual-engine failure during its approach to Lagos. It failed to reach its intended destination and crashed onto buildings,killing all 153 people on board and six on the ground. With 159 deaths,it remains as the deadliest commercial airliner crash in Nigerian history since the Kano air disaster in 1973.
