Heptapterus is a genus of three-barbeled catfishes native to South America.
There are currently 12 recognized species in this genus: [1]
Astyanax is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. Some of these fish, like many of their relatives, are kept as aquarium pets and known collectively as tetras. With around 150 described species and new ones being described yearly, this genus is among the largest of the entire order; Hyphessobrycon also has more than 145 species and which one is larger at any one time depends on whether more species have been recently described in one or the other. The blind and colorless cave tetra of Mexico is a famous member of the genus, but its taxonomic position is disputed: Some recognize it as part of the Mexican tetra and this is supported by phylogenetic evidence, but others recognize the cave form as a separate species, A. jordani.
Mirande is a commune in the Gers department, Occitania, southwestern France.
Jenynsia is a genus of freshwater fishes in the family Anablepidae. Like Anableps species, they are onesided livebearers: some sources indicate that they only mate on one side, right-"handed" males with left-"handed" females and vice versa. However, other sources dispute this. These South American fish are viviparous.
Andromakhe is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Characidae of the order Characiformes.
Microglanis is a genus of fish in the family Pseudopimelodidae native to South America. This genus has the widest distribution within its family, with species ranging from the Guianas to Venezuela; western slope of the Andes in Ecuador and Peru to the Río de La Plata basin in Argentina. They occur eastward to the Orinoco and Amazon basins. It is also present in the eastern coastal rivers of Brazil.
Pimelodus is a genus of fish in the family Pimelodidae native to Central and South America.
Olyra is a genus of catfishes of the family Bagridae. This genus occurs throughout South Asia and western Indochina, from India to western Thailand.
Hisonotus is a genus of armored catfishes native to South America. Species of Hisonotus and Curculionichthys are the only representatives of the subfamily Otothyrinae having serrae on the posterior edge of the pectoral fin spine. These species are small fishes, generally found in small fast flowing streams, where they grasp to the branches and leaves of aquatic or subaquatic plants. The species of this genus mostly occur in Atlantic coastal streams of southern Brazil and the Paraguay-Paraná system of southern South America. They are also distributed in the Río de La Plata basin and coastal rivers of southeastern Brazil.
Bryconamericus is a genus of characins found in Central and South America.
Chrysobrycon is a genus of characins endemic to South America.
Gephyrocharax is a genus of characins found in South America, Trinidad in the Caribbean, and Panama.
Oligosarcus is a genus of characins from freshwater habitats in northern Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay, eastern Bolivia, and southern and central Brazil. They reach up to 31 cm (12 in) in length and are predators that mainly feed on smaller fish.
Steindachnerina is a genus of toothless characins from South America, with 24 currently described species:
Imparfinis is a genus of three-barbeled catfishes native to South America, with a single species in Central America.
Cnesterodon is a genus of poeciliids native to South America.
Astyanax abramis is a small freshwater fish from the inland rivers of South America. It is plentiful in almost the entire continent, with a habitat including the La Plata, upper Amazon, and Meta River basins. The body shape is subrhomboidal and laterally compressed, and the scales are largely silver, with a blue or green tint on the dorsal side.
Astyanax asuncionensis is a small species of freshwater fish described in 1972 from Asunción, the capital of Paraguay in South America. Its specific epithet is in reference to this. Currently, its range is known to encompass areas of not just Paraguay but also Argentina and Brazil. It is an adaptable, omnivorous species that easily lives in sympatry with various congeners.
Psalidodon is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Characidae of the order Characiformes. Some of these fish, like many of their relatives, are kept as aquarium pets and known collectively as tetras.
Makunaima is a genus of freshwater fish in the family Characidae of the order Characiformes.
Cnesterodon pirai, the Almeida toothcarp, is a species of poeciliid that is only know from its type locality, the arroyo Almeida, an affluent of the arroyo Cuñá-Pirú, in the Río Paraná basin, Aristóbulo del Valle, Misiones in Argentina.
