iCarly is an American comedy television revival of the 2007 Nickelodeon series of the same name. The series stars Miranda Cosgrove, Jerry Trainor, Nathan Kress, Laci Mosley, and Jaidyn Triplett, with Cosgrove, Trainor and Kress reprising their roles from the original run. It premiered on Paramount+ on June 17, 2021, to positive reviews. The second season premiered on April 8, 2022, while the third season premiered on June 1, 2023. In October 2023, the series was cancelled after three seasons. [4]

Premise

Eight and a half years after the finale of the previous series, Carly Shay has returned to Seattle, where she shares an apartment with her roommate Harper. Carly's older brother Spencer has become a wealthy artist after accidentally creating a renowned sculpture. Following two divorces and a failed tech start-up, Freddie Benson has moved back to live with his mother, accompanied by his adopted 11-year-old stepdaughter Millicent. All main characters live in Bushwell Plaza, the apartment building where the original show was set. When Carly decides to relaunch her iCarly webshow, she receives mainstream attention with the help of Spencer, Freddie and her new friends.

After Spencer clears up the misunderstanding, Carly admits she is afraid of becoming committed in marriage because their mother abandoned them as young children. She also confides in Freddie about this, though says that dating him has made her reconsider her views on marriage. On the day of the wedding, Marissa and Lewbert decide at the last minute to go to Las Vegas and elope like they had originally planned. Carly and Freddie consider getting married in their place, but before anything can be discussed, Spencer and Carly are shocked to see their long-absent mother arrive at the venue, ending the season and the series on a cliffhanger.

Production

Development

Then-Nickelodeon executive Paula Kaplan contacted Cosgrove with a pitch for a new iCarly series, revolving around Carly and Spencer running a Hype House-like content house with a new generation of influencers taking influence from the iCarly web show. The demographic for the show was planned to be aimed towards kids, following in the same footsteps as other revivals and spin-offs like Disney Channel's Raven's Home and Girl Meets World . "I don't think that any of us would have been up for that [idea]," she says. "What excited me about doing iCarly again was getting to put the characters in situations that we couldn't show before." [16] Cosgrove contacted Jerry Trainor, Nathan Kress and Jennette McCurdy about the project. Kress and Trainor were on board with the project, however McCurdy declined. After multiple conversations with the returning cast, Cosgrove requested that the revival series be aimed towards the adults who grew up with it, which ViacomCBS and AwesomenessTV immediately agreed to, unlike the shelved Lizzie McGuire series being developed at Disney+. As the executive producer of the series, Cosgrove wanted to incorporate more mature topics and diversity into the series, as well as nostalgia. [16]

The series was announced in December 2020, with Jay Kogen and Ali Schouten serving as co-showrunners and executive producers. Cosgrove, Kress, and Trainor would reprise their roles from the original series. [17] [18] In February 2021, it was reported that Kogen left the project due to "creative differences" with Cosgrove, though he still retained a writing credit alongside Ali Schouten for the first episode, "iStart Over." [19] Later that month, McCurdy confirmed that she would not reprise her role of Sam Puckett for the revival, as a result of quitting acting and feeling embarrassed by her past career. [20] It was also revealed that the revival had been picked up for 13 episodes, with the pilot being directed by Phill Lewis, and written by Kogen and Schouten. In May, the premiere date was revealed to be June 17, 2021, with a teaser image also being revealed. [21] [6] On June 1, the first official trailer of the revival was released. [22] On July 15, the series was renewed for a second season. [23]

On July 27, 2022, the series was renewed for a third season, which premiered on June 1, 2023. [24] [25]

On October 4, 2023, the series was canceled after three seasons. [4]

Casting

In March 2021, it was reported that Laci Mosley had been cast as Harper, Carly's new roommate and best friend, and that Jaidyn Triplett had been cast as Millicent, Freddie's snarky and social media-obsessed step-daughter. [26] Since the announcement of her casting, Mosley has been the target of attacks from fans who saw her as a replacement for McCurdy's character from the original. In response, Franchesca Ramsey, one of the writers of the show, tweeted "Laci's character Harper isn't replacing Sam. No one could replace Jennette McCurdy or her incredible talent! But it's both racist as hell & completely unfair to decide that Laci hasn't earned her role especially since the show isn't even out yet!!" [27]

Filming

In March 2021, filming for the revival had officially begun. [26] Production on the first season ended on June 25, 2021. [28] Production on the second season began in October 2021 [29] [30] and ended on February 2, 2022. [31]

Possible series finale film

In May 2024, Cosgrove has stated that she wants to wrap up the entire series with a finale film, confirming it would be likely, saying, "I'm pretty sure it's gonna happen, so I'm excited, and I'd love to get to wrap up the story". [32] [33] A few months later, in November, Cosgrove vaguely revealed that a project is in the works. [34]

Release

The first three episodes were released on June 17, 2021, with subsequent episodes releasing weekly until August 26, 2021. [22] The first episode, albeit slightly shortened, aired on Nick at Nite on July 17, 2021. [35] The second season premiered on April 8, 2022. [36] [37] "iObject, Lewbert!" became the second episode overall to receive a linear airing, leading out of the 2022 Kids' Choice Awards on April 9 on Nickelodeon, as well as an airing on MTV on April 19, 2022. Reception

Critical response

Critics gave the first season positive reviews. On the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the first season holds a 100% approval rating with an average rating of 6.7/10, based on eight reviews. [38]

<i>iCarly</i> American teen sitcom (2007–2012)

iCarly is an American teen sitcom created by Dan Schneider, which originally aired on Nickelodeon from September 8, 2007, to November 23, 2012. The series tells the story of Carly Shay, a teenager who creates and hosts her own web show called iCarly with her best friends, Sam and Freddie in the apartment loft that she and her older brother, Spencer live in. As the web show quickly becomes an internet phenomenon, the characters are tasked with balancing their normal teenage lives with the wacky situations their newfound fame lands them in. By the fourth season, their school friend, Gibby also works with them on the web show.

Gerald William "Jerry" Trainor is an American actor and musician. He is best known for his roles as "Crazy" Steve in Drake & Josh and Spencer Shay in the teen sitcom iCarly and its revival series of the same name, winning three Kids' Choice Awards for his performances. He also did voice work in T.U.F.F. Puppy as Dudley Puppy, for which he received a Daytime Emmy Award nomination. Since 2004, Trainor has worked primarily on the Nickelodeon network. Outside of this, he has had recurring and guest roles on young adult-oriented shows on the Disney Channel and Netflix as well as in the more mature shows Crossing Jordan and 2 Broke Girls.

Nathan Karl Kress is an American actor and television director. Kress began his career at the age of three, notably appearing in several television commercials and providing the voices of Easy and Tough Pup in the comedy-drama film Babe: Pig in the City (1998). He resumed acting seven years later on the talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2005), and thereafter had regular appearances on several Nickelodeon productions, including Toplin on the sitcom Drake & Josh (2007). Kress rose to prominence for portraying Freddie Benson on the Nickelodeon sitcom iCarly (2007–2012), which earned him five Young Artist Award nominations. He reprised his role in the revival series of the same name (2021–2023). He also subsequently voiced Wedge Antilles in the Disney XD animated series Star Wars Rebels (2016–2017).

The first season of iCarly aired on Nickelodeon from September 8, 2007, to July 25, 2008. The season introduces Carly Shay, Sam Puckett, Freddie Benson, and Spencer Shay. This is notably the only season without a 1-hour special.

The second season of iCarly aired on Nickelodeon from September 27, 2008 to August 8, 2009. The season continues the stories of Carly Shay, Sam Puckett, and Freddie Benson as they produce their own web show called "iCarly." Jerry Trainor co-stars as Carly's big brother Spencer. This season is the first to have a major plot twist, as it sees Sam and Freddie sharing their first kiss, just to avoid the frustration of not having a first kiss. This is followed by them becoming somewhat closer. This season contained the special "iChristmas". The second season consisted of 45 episodes, with 25 of them airing as part of the second season before the remaining 20 were marketed as the third season. This season has specials "iGo to Japan", "iChristmas", "iKiss", "iReunite with Missy", "iMake Sam Girlier", "iDate a Bad Boy", and "iFight Shelby Marx"

iGo to Japan is a 2008 television film, serving as the fifth episode of the second season of Nickelodeon TV series iCarly. It premiered on November 8, 2008, on Nickelodeon, and November 21 on YTV. The television movie stars Miranda Cosgrove, Jennette McCurdy, Nathan Kress, Jerry Trainor, and Mary Scheer. The film was directed by Steve Hoefer. Production began in early 2008 and lasted 4 to 5 weeks.

The third season of iCarly aired on Nickelodeon from September 12, 2009, to June 26, 2010. iParty with Victorious is a 2011 television movie that acts as a crossover of the television series iCarly and Victorious. It premiered on Nickelodeon on June 11, 2011, and serves as the tenth episode and season finale of iCarly's fourth season.

The fourth season of iCarly began airing on Nickelodeon July 30, 2010, and ended on June 11, 2011. The season features Carly Shay, Sam Puckett and Freddie Benson as their own Web Show iCarly is becoming more popular worldwide. Jerry Trainor co-stars as Carly's big brother Spencer. Noah Munck joins the main cast this season as Gibby Gibson. The specials of the season include "iGot a Hot Room", "iSam's Mom", "iDo", "iStart a Fan War", "iOMG", and "iParty with Victorious".

The fifth season of iCarly began airing on Nickelodeon on August 13, 2011, and finished its run on January 21, 2012.

The sixth and final season of iCarly began airing on Nickelodeon on March 24, 2012. This season features Carly Shay, Sam Puckett and Freddie Benson, as their web show, iCarly, is becoming more popular worldwide. iCarly aired its 100th produced episode in this season, making it the first Nickelodeon live-action sitcom to reach that number. Nickelodeon shows like Drake & Josh, Zoey 101 and others usually lasted around 65 episodes. As of 2019, only Nickelodeon's sketch comedy series All That and Henry Danger had reached a similar number of episodes.

iGoodbye 13th episode of the 6th season of iCarly

"iGoodbye" is the series finale of the American television sitcom iCarly. The episode, which aired as an hour-long special on Nickelodeon on November 23, 2012, guest starred David Chisum as Colonel Steven Shay, Carly and Spencer's father.

Jaidyn Triplett is an American actress. She has acted on the series The Affair and iCarly and in the films All About the Money and The Beach Trip.
