ISNA Canada is a non-profit Muslim religious organization in Canada. It offers a variety of programs and services to the Canadian Muslim community at large, and is associated with the Islamic Society of North America, which is based in the United States. The organization has three centres, located in Mississauga, Toronto, and Yellowknife.
ISNA Canada states that its goal is to help Muslims put their faith into action by offering a variety of volunteer, educational and leadership opportunities. [1] Some of these opportunities include: a monthly food bank that serves 600 families per month; programs that engage youth in community service, such as Walk the Talk; weekend Islamic and Arabic schools; Quran classes; and kids camps. [2] [3]
Some of the other services that ISNA Canada provides to support Muslims include marriage services, funeral services, Islamic psychotherapy and mental health counselling, halal certification, and Islamic bookstores. [4]
ISNA Canada responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by developing four distinct programs and services: the ISNA Canada Foodbank, the frontline workers' meal program, relief kits, and drive-thru Ramadan meals.
In mid-March, ISNA Canada initiated the creation of the Canadian Muslim Response Network with over 40 organization and distributed 1420 hygiene kits, 1527 food kits and 3810 fruits and vegetables to those most vulnerable during the pandemic, such as seniors, single mothers of young children, immuno-compromised individuals, and people with disabilities. On March 21, 2020 ISNA Canada collaborated with local restaurants to provide free meals to healthcare frontline workers. [6] The program started with restaurants in the Halton and Peel regions but eventually reached Toronto, Waterloo, and Windsor. [6] After a month's time, the program was extended to provide meals to essential workers, including police officers, paramedics, and shelters. [6] The program ran for two months and served over 8000 meals. [6]
An audit of ISNA Canada in 2011 found that only a quarter of the funds donated to the organisation went to help the poor; charity donations were misdirected to private businesses. [7]
On September 21, 2013, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) revoked the charitable tax-exempt status of the ISNA Development Foundation, [8] a charity that operated out of ISNA Canada's headquarters. [9] ISNA Canada was not affected by the move. [10]
On September 12, 2018, the CRA suspended ISNA Canada for one year and ordered the charity to pay a penalty of CA$550,000 after determining that "the society’s resources may have, directly or indirectly, been used to support the political efforts of Jamaat-e-Islami and/or its armed wing Hizbul Mujahideen." [11] [12] Hizbul Mujahideen, which emerged as a pro-Pakistan militant faction in the Kashmir insurgency around 1989, is designated as a terrorist organization by Canada, the United States, the European Union, and India.
The United States–based Islamic Society of North America noted association with ISNA Canada but emphasized its complete separation of governance, accounting, and auditing. [13]
Islam is the second-largest religion in Canada practised by approximately 5% of the population. Canadian Muslims are one of the most ethnically diverse religious groups across the country. Muslims have lived in Canada since 1871 and the first mosque was established in 1938. Most Canadian Muslims are Sunni, while a significant minority are Shia.

The CRA collects taxes, administers tax law and policy, and delivers benefit programs and tax credits. It is supported entirely by Foundation grants and donations and by 2012, 90% of its donors were Canadian. By 2007, the Foundation employed about seventy-five staff members.

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) is a non-profit Muslim religious organization based in the United States and serving North America. It provides a number of programs and services to North America's Muslim communities and broader societies. ISNA holds an annual convention that is generally regarded as the largest regulated gathering of Muslims in the United States. It is headquartered in Plainfield, Indiana. The organization has been subject to various controversies throughout its existence.

The organization was established in 2000 to focus on combatting Islamophobia, hate and racism through legal action, public advocacy, education, and media representation. NCCM's mission is "to protect Canadian human rights and civil liberties, challenge discrimination and Islamophobia, build mutual understanding, and advocate for the public concerns of Canadian Muslims."
Jami Mosque is a mosque in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Located just east of High Park, it is the oldest Canadian Islamic centre in the city and dubbed "the mother of all the mosques in Toronto".
Islamic Relief USA (IRUSA), based in Alexandria, Virginia, is a non-profit 501(c)(3) humanitarian agency and member of the Islamic Relief Worldwide group of organizations. IRUSA was founded in California in 1993. In addition to international relief and development initiatives, Islamic Relief USA also sponsors and funds domestic projects ranging from emergency disaster responses to assisting the American homeless population and supporting those who cannot afford basic healthcare.
The Ahlul Bayt Assembly of Canada is a federation of Shi'a Muslim organizations in Canada and includes 80 Shi'a Islamic centres and mosques in the country. The organization was founded in 1993 by Shia Muslim leaders in Canada. It had been registered with the Government of Canada as a charitable organization until 2019 when the Canada Revenue Agency stripped of the organization of its charitable status after it was alleged that the group was “acting as a facilitator organization to support the operational goals” of the Ahl Al-Bayt World Assembly in Iran, which has links to the Lebanese Hezbollah and its goal is “to facilitate the spread of the Iranian revolutionary ideology in Canada.”

Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind is an al-Qaeda-affiliated Islamist jihadist militant group active in Kashmir. The group's stated objective is to create Kashmir as an independent Islamic state under Sharia law and to fight jihad against Indian administration of Jammu and Kashmir.
Charities Directorate of Canada is part of the Federal Ministry of National Revenue, and is responsible for reviewing the applications for charity registration, as well as auditing and maintaining accountability through education and responsible enforcement. They work to count and monitor the registered charities operating in Canada in the fairest way possible. As of December 2014, there were 86,193 charities registered in the directorate. The Directorate is located in Ottawa, in the Canadian Revenue Agency offices.
