ISNA Canada is a non-profit organization in Canada that offers many programs and services to the Canadian community at large. During the COVID-19 pandemic, ISNA Canada re-adjusted its services and programs to serve the community through virtual programs and drive-thru community experiences. ISNA has three centers in Canada, located in Mississauga, Toronto and Yellowknife.
ISNA Canada strives to help Muslims put their faith into action by offering a variety of volunteer, educational and leadership opportunities. [1] Some of these opportunities include: a monthly food bank that serves 600 families per month, programs like Walk the Talk that engage youth in community service, weekend Islamic and Arabic schools, Quran classes, kids camps and much more. [2] [3] With ISNA Canada's vision for a community powered by youth, they are always looking for new ways to empower and energize young people to be catalysts for positive changes in the community.
Some of the other services that ISNA Canada provides to support Muslims include marriage services, funeral services, Islamically-integrated psychotherapy and mental health counselling, Halal certification and Islamic bookstore. [4]
ISNA Canada was quick in its response to the COVID-19 pandemic with success in four different programs and services: the ISNA Canada Foodbank, the frontline workers meal program, the relief kits and the drive-thru Ramadan meals.
In mid-March ISNA Canada instigated the creation of the Canadian Muslim Response Network with over 40 organization and distributed 1420 hygiene kits, 1527 food kits and 3810 fruits and vegetables to those most vulnerable during the pandemic including seniors, single mothers of young children, immuno-compromised individuals and people with disabilities. [5]
The Foodbank usually serves families inside the Islamic Center of Canada. [6] As a result of the pandemic the foodbank team devised an alternative drive thru model to serve those in need. Volunteers wore masks and gloves and beneficiaries remained in their cars to limit contact and physical interaction. [7] They would simply drive up, have their information quickly verified and receive a grocery gift card. [7] During the Ramadan distribution they served up to 700 families. [6]
On March 21, 2020 ISNA Canada collaborated with local restaurants to provide free meals to healthcare front-line workers. [8] The program started with restaurants in the Halton and Peel regions but eventually reached Toronto, Waterloo and Windsor. [8] After a month's time the program was extended to provide meals to essential workers, including police officers, paramedics and shelters. [8] The program ran for 2 months and served over 8000 meals. [8]
Ramadan is a month of community and gathering for Muslims, however, the pandemic prevented that from happening this year. ISNA Canada decided to utilize the foodbank drive thru model to provide drive thru iftars (the meal for breaking the fast) and suhoors (the meal eaten early morning before starting the fast). There was an average of 1000 and 700 meals served at each iftar and suhoor, respectively. Throughout the month of Ramadan the Premier, MPs and MPPs attended these drive thru iftars and served meals to community members. [9] [10] The drive thru model was also successfully carried through to the Eid celebrations that commemorated the end of Ramadan, where the Mayor of Mississauga was present. [11]
An audit of ISNA Canada in 2011 found that only a quarter of the funds donated to the organisation went to help the poor. Charity donations were misdirected to private businesses. [12]
On September 21, 2013, the Canada Revenue Agency revoked the charitable tax-exempt status of the ISNA Development Foundation, [13] a charity that operated out of ISNA Canada's headquarters. [14] ISNA Canada was not affected by the move. [15]
On September 12, 2018, CRA suspended the organization for one year and ordered the charity to pay a penalty of $550,000. The CRA determined that "the society’s resources may have, directly or indirectly, been used the support the political efforts of Jamaat-e-Islami and/or its armed wing Hizbul Mujahideen." [16] [17]
The U.S.-based Islamic Society of North America, a distinct organization, noted association with ISNA Canada but emphasized its complete separation of governance, accounting, and auditing. [18]
Ramadan, also spelled Ramazan, Ramzan, Ramadhan or Ramathan, is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims worldwide as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer, reflection and community. A commemoration of Muhammad's first revelation, the annual observance of Ramadan is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam and lasts twenty-nine to thirty days, from one sighting of the crescent moon to the next.
Eid al-Fitr, is the earlier of the two official holidays celebrated within Islam. The religious holiday is celebrated by Muslims worldwide because it marks the end of the month-long dawn-to-sunset fasting of Ramadan. It falls on the first day of Shawwal in the Islamic calendar; this does not always fall on the same Gregorian day, as the start of any lunar Hijri month varies based on when the new moon is sighted by local religious authorities. The holiday is known under various other names in different languages and countries around the world. The day is also called Lesser Eid, or simply Eid.

Fasting in Islam is the practice of abstaining, usually from food, drink, smoking, and sexual activity. During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Sawm is observed between dawn and nightfall when the adhan of the Maghrib prayer is sounded. Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim lunar calendar and fasting is a requirement for Muslims as it is the fourth of the five pillars of Islam.
Iftar, also known as ftoor, is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset. They break their fast at the time of the call to prayer for the evening prayer. This is their second meal of the day; the daily fast during Ramadan begins immediately after the pre-dawn meal of suhur and continues during the daylight hours, ending with sunset with the evening meal of iftar.
Sahūr or Suhūr, also called Sahari, Sahrī or Sehri is the meal consumed early in the morning by Muslims before fasting (sawm), before dawn during or outside the Islamic month of Ramadan. The meal is eaten before fajr prayer. Sahur is matched to iftar as the evening meal during Ramadan, replacing the traditional three meals a day, although in some places dinner is also consumed after iftar later during the night.
There are two official holidays in Islam, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha. Both holidays occur on dates in the lunar Islamic calendar, which is different from the solar based Gregorian calendar, so they are observed on different Gregorian dates every year. There are a number of other days of note and festivals, some common to all Muslims, other specific to Shia Islam as a whole or branches thereof.
Feeding America is a United States–based nonprofit organization that is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and other community-based agencies. Forbes ranks it as the second largest U.S. charity by revenue. Feeding America was known as America's Second Harvest until August 31, 2008.
During the entire month of Ramadan, Muslims are obligated to fast, every day from dawn to sunset. Fasting requires the abstinence from food and drink. Fasting the month of Ramadān was made obligatory (wājib) during the month of Sha‘bān, in the second year after the Muslims migrated from Makkah to Madīnah. Fasting the month of Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam.

Zakat Foundation of America is registered under 501(c)(3) as a non-profit charity organization.
The White House Iftar dinner is an annual reception held at the White House and hosted by the U.S. President and the First Lady to celebrate the Muslim month of Ramadan. The annual tradition started in 1996 when Hillary Clinton hosted a Ramadan Eid celebration dinner. The modern iteration of the reception is attended by prominent members of the Muslim American community including politicians, community leaders and students.
The East Plano Islamic Center (EPIC) is a mosque located in Plano, Texas. The current building of the masjid opened in July 2015, although the mosque started a decade earlier. The current Imam is Nadim Bashir, and the current resident scholar is Yasir Qadhi. The mosque is one of many mosques in the DFW area. In during the May 2021 Israel–Palestine crisis EPIC masjid actively spoke out on Palestinian rights
The Islamic Society of Baltimore (ISB) is a Muslim community center located in Catonsville, Baltimore County, Maryland, consisting of Masjid Al-Rahmah, Al-Rahmah School, and several other services. The society was founded in 1969 by three Muslim physicians and is known for then-President Barack Obama's visit on February 3, 2016. As of 2019, the society serves around 3,000 people.
Mohamad Fakih is a Lebanese-Canadian businessperson, and philanthropist. Founder of the Middle Eastern Halal restaurant chain, Paramount Fine Foods, Fakih is also known for his charitable work, philanthropy, and community service through the Fakih Foundation.
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted religion in various ways, including the cancellation of the worship services of various faiths and the closure of Sunday schools, as well as the cancellation of pilgrimages, ceremonies and festivals. Many churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples have offered worship through livestream amidst the pandemic.
The COVID-19 pandemic is an ongoing viral pandemic of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), a novel infectious disease caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The pandemic has affected the Cities of Mississauga and Brampton, and the Town of Caledon, within the Regional Municipality of Peel. As part of the larger closure decisions in Ontario, a stay-at-home order shuttered all nonessential businesses, and caused event cancellations.
