The ice sledge hockey competition of the 2010 Winter Paralympics was held at the UBC Winter Sports Centre in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, from 13 March to 20 March 2010.
For the first time, women were allowed to compete in ice sledge hockey at the Paralympic Games. [1]
Following high hopes in the host nation, Canada's defeat in the semi-finals was described as causing "national despair". [2]
Six slots were reserved for the top six finishers at the 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships, one slot was reserved for the winner of the 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Paralympic Qualifier, and one slot was reserved for the host country, Canada. Since Canada placed in the top six of the World Championships, the eighth slot was given to the second-place finisher at the Paralympic Qualifier.

It was reported that this decision was taken without consulting Canada, the reigning champion in the sport. Hockey Canada announced that there would be no women on the Canadian ice sledge hockey roster at the Paralympics, because no Canadian women play at that level. At the 2006 Paralympics in Turin, Sweden attempted to put a female player on their roster, but were not allowed to do so. [4]

Sledge hockey, also known as Sled hockey in American English, and Para ice hockey in international competition, is an adaptation of ice hockey for players who have a physical disability. The sport was invented in the early 1960s at a rehabilitation centre in Stockholm, Sweden, and played under similar rules to standard ice hockey. Players are seated on sleds and use special hockey sticks with metal "teeth" on the tips of their handles to navigate the ice. Playing venues use an ice hockey rink.
At the 2006 Winter Paralympics, the ice sledge hockey events were contested at the Torino Esposizioni.
The first IPC Ice Sledge Hockey European Championships was held between April 10, 2005 and April 16, 2005 in the eastern Moravian city of Zlín, Czech Republic. Participating 80 athletes from six nations: Czech Republic, Estonia, Germany, Great Britain, Italy and Sweden. The best European team joined the already qualified teams from Canada, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the USA and host country Italy to the Torino 2006 Paralympic Winter Games.
The 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships was the fifth IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships that took place in early 2009. The competition was divided into two tournaments, with Tournament B held from 15 to 21 March in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, and Tournament A held from 9 to 16 May in Ostrava, the Czech Republic. A total of thirteen teams participated; eight in Tournament A and five in Tournament B. The top six teams from Tournament A automatically qualified for the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The remaining two teams from Tournament A and the top two teams from Tournament B will play in the 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Paralympic Qualifier to determine who will take the remaining two Paralympic slots.
Para ice hockey at the Winter Paralympics has been held since the 1994 Winter Paralympics, when it was known as ice sledge hockey.
Taylor Chace is an American ice sledge hockey player.
The Canada men's national ice hockey team will participate in various events during the 2009–10 ice hockey season.
Japan sent 42 competitors to compete in all five disciplines at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver.
Bradley Bowden is a Canadian ice sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball player.
Gregory Westlake is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player.
Billy Bridges is a Canadian ice sledge hockey and wheelchair basketball player. Born in Summerside, he has spina bifida. On July 1, 2011, Bridges married former Olympic women's ice hockey player Sami Jo Small. He competed at the 2022 Winter Paralympics, in Para ice hockey winning a silver medal.
The ice sledge hockey competition of the 2014 Winter Paralympics was held at the Shayba Arena in Sochi, Russia, from 8 to 15 March 2014. A total of eight teams competed in the mixed team tournament.
The 2013 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships was the seventh IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships that took place in the SPART Complex in Goyang, South Korea from 12 to 20 April 2013. It was the first time that South Korea hosted the IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships. In the final match, Canada defeated the United States 1–0, to win their third title. Russia defeated the Czech Republic 3-0 for the bronze medal.
Manuel Guerra Jr. is an American former ice sledge hockey player. He has won medals with Team USA at the 2002 Winter Paralympics and 2006 Winter Paralympics.
The women's tournament in ice hockey at the 2018 Winter Olympics was held in Gangneung, South Korea between 10 and 22 February 2018. Eight countries qualified for the tournament; five of them did so automatically by virtue of their ranking by the International Ice Hockey Federation, one, South Korea, automatically qualified as hosts, while the two others took part in a qualification tournament. Under a special agreement with the IOC and the IIHF, twelve North Korean players joined the host team to form a united team.
