In These Black Days: A Tribute to Black Sabbath is the name of a six-volume Black Sabbath tribute series, released in the late 1990s as a series of split 7" singles by various artists on Hydra Head Records.

Contents

A double CD compiling all of the songs from the 7"s with additional Black Sabbath covers from other bands associated with Hydra Head Records was planned for years, but has not been released. [2]

In 2013, all six volumes were re-released in a 7×7" box set that is limited to less than 100 copies. [3]

Canceled CD

The unreleased double CD compilation was intended to be a split release between Hydra Head and Relapse Records, with additional Sabbath covers provided by Goatsnake, Isis, Agoraphobic Nosebleed, Amber Asylum, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. [2] Goatsnake's cover of "Who Are You" was instead included on a repress of the Dog Days EP; Isis' cover of "Hand of Doom" was included on the Sawblade EP; Amber Asylum's cover of "Black Sabbath" was included on The Supernatural Parlour Collection; The Dillinger Escape Plan's cover of "Paranoid" was included on a reissue of the Under the Running Board EP.

Botch is an American mathcore band formed in 1993 in Tacoma, Washington. The band, featuring Brian Cook, Dave Knudson, Tim Latona and Dave Verellen, spent four years as a garage band and released several demos and EPs before signing to Hydra Head Records. Through the label, Botch released two studio albums: American Nervoso (1998) and We Are the Romans (1999). The group toured extensively and internationally in support of their albums with like-minded bands such as The Blood Brothers, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ink & Dagger and Jesuit. Botch struggled to write a third studio album, and in 2002 the group broke up due to tensions among the band members and creative differences. Hydra Head posthumously released an EP of songs the group had been working on before they split titled An Anthology of Dead Ends and a live album documenting their final show titled 061502 in 2006.

Peter Marc Stahl is an American musician best known for fronting the Virginia-based punk/hardcore band Scream with his brother Franz. Early on, Scream also featured Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl on drums who credited Pete Stahl as the inspiration for the song "My Hero" for his tutelage.

Hydra Head Records was an independent record label specializing in extreme metal music, founded in New Mexico by Aaron Turner in 1993. It had another imprint, Hydra Head Noise Industries, which specialized in experimental and noise music. Turner announced he was winding the label down in 2012. In 2020, the label removed its catalog from Spotify and returned its album rights back to several artists.

<i>Sawblade</i> (Isis EP) 1999 EP by Isis

The Sawblade EP is a handmade CD-R made by Isis for their tour with Neurosis and Candiria, limited to 200 copies. It was sold at these shows at a limit of 15 per night, and the leftover copies were given to friends of the band as a year-end "thank you" gift. The vinyl run of this release was limited to 250 copies. As such, Aaron Turner doesn't consider this an 'official' Isis release, describing it as “more like a special artifact for us and the few converts we had at the time”.

Knut were a mathcore/sludge metal band from Geneva, Switzerland, formed in 1994. They started by playing in the local underground squat scene, publishing a couple of seven-inch releases as well as their first CD in 1997, titled Leftovers. This early material was put out on Snuff Records, which was run by Roderic Mounir and Didier Séverin. In 1998, Knut released their first full-length, Bastardiser, which showcased a sharper and more focused aggression, combining heavily distorted guitars, odd-time signatures, use of discordance and repetition, and harsh vocals.

Aaron Turner is an American musician, singer, graphic artist, and founder of label Hydra Head Records. He is most widely known for his role as guitarist and vocalist for the post-metal bands SUMAC and Isis, while also participating in several other bands and projects such as Old Man Gloom, Lotus Eaters and Split Cranium, a collaboration with Jussi Lehtisalo of Finnish band Circle who toured with Isis in 2009.

The discography of The Dillinger Escape Plan, an American mathcore band, consists of six studio albums, six extended plays (EPs), two split EPs, eight singles, one video album, 15 music videos and seven other appearances. Formed in Morris Plains, New Jersey in 1997, the band originally featured vocalist Dimitri Minakakis, guitarists Ben Weinman and Derek Brantley, bassist Adam Doll and drummer Chris Pennie; Brantley left after two shows and was replaced briefly by touring guitarist John Fulton, who himself left in 1998. Dog Days is an EP by American doom metal band Goatsnake, released in 2000 via Southern Lord Records. It consists of material recorded from 1997 to 1999. It was re-pressed by Southern Lord in 2004 on vinyl only and limited to 500 copies. The re-press includes a cover of Black Sabbath's "Who Are You". Also in 2004, Southern Lord repackaged the EP with Goatsnake Vol. 1 on a single CD.

Drowningman is an American hardcore punk band from Burlington, Vermont, which was active from 1995 to 2005. Formed in the fall of 1995 by Simon Brody, Denny Donovan, Javin Leonard, Dave Barnett and Todd Tomlinson, the band was heavily influenced by a variety of bands including Deadguy, Unbroken, Shotmaker, Unwound, Sunny Day Real Estate and Promise Ring. This musical amalgamation influenced the modern metalcore and mathcore musical subgenres.

Jesuit was an American hardcore punk band from Virginia Beach, Virginia. Active in the mid and late 1990s, the group released twelve songs but disbanded before recording a full-length album.
