Jason Tarver (born August 28, 1974) is an American football coach who is the linebackers coach for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders. Tarver also coached at Vanderbilt, Stanford, UCLA and West Valley College.

Early life and playing career

Tarver attended Foothill High School in Pleasanton, California and graduated in 1993. After graduating from high school, he attended Santa Clara University from 1992 to 1997. Since Santa Clara had cut their football team after the 1992 season, Tarver decided to play defensive back at West Valley College for the 1994–1995 seasons. He graduated from Santa Clara with a bachelor's degree in biochemistry in 1997. [1] Tarver maintained a close relationship with West Valley's football program and advocated against the cutting of the school's football program, until it ultimately was cut in 2014.

Coaching career

Early career

After his playing career ended, Tarver served as outside linebackers, defensive backs, and special teams coach at West Valley for the 1996 and 1997 seasons, and as a graduate assistant at UCLA for the 1998 through 2000 seasons, while pursuing his master's degree.

San Francisco 49ers

In 2001, Tarver was hired by the San Francisco 49ers as an offensive quality control coach. In 2004, he was promoted to assistant running backs coach. In 2005, Tarver was promoted to outside linebackers coach.

Stanford

In 2011, Tarver was named co-defensive coordinator on David Shaw's staff at Stanford. [2]

Oakland Raiders

In February 2012, Tarver was hired by the Oakland Raiders as their defensive coordinator under head coach Dennis Allen. [3] In Tarver's first season as Raiders defensive coordinator, the defense improved from 29th overall in 2011 to 18th in 2012. He made multiple media headlines in 2013, when, during a 21-18 Raiders win over the Steelers, cameras picked up Tarver yelling and making obscene gestures towards the referees after Oakland cornerback Mike Jenkins was flagged for hitting a defenseless receiver. [4] [5] He apologized after the incident, but was still later fined $15,000 by the Raiders for his actions. [6]

San Francisco 49ers

In 2015, Tarver returned to the San Francisco 49ers and was hired as their linebackers coach under head coach Jim Tomsula. Tarver was retained under new head coach Chip Kelly in 2016.

Vanderbilt

In February 2018, it was announced that Tarver was hired as defensive coordinator under Vanderbilt Commodores head coach Derek Mason. [7]

Cleveland Browns

On February 18, 2020, Tarver was hired by the Cleveland Browns as their linebackers coach under head coach Kevin Stefanski. [8]

Personal life

Tarver and his wife Katie have two sons, Merrick and Keegan. They currently live in Cleveland, but have a vacation home in California that they go to during the summer. [9]

Charles Evans Bresnahan is an American football coach and former player. He was the defensive coordinator of the Oakland Raiders on two occasions and the Cincinnati Bengals of the National Football League (NFL) as well as the Florida Tuskers and Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League (UFL). He also served as defensive coordinator in the college ranks at the University of Central Florida, University of South Florida and University of Maine. Bresnahan also served as an assistant coach with the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts of the NFL and the United States Naval Academy (Navy) and the Georgia Institute of Technology in the college ranks. Bresnahan also assisted in the Officiating Department of the NFL for 3 seasons. He is the son of Tom Bresnahan, a long time NFL assistant and Offensive Coordinator who coached 4 Super Bowls under Marv Levy (HOF-2001) with the Buffalo Bills.

The 2012 Oakland Raiders season was the franchise's 43rd season in the National Football League (NFL) and the 53rd overall. It was the first season under head coach Dennis Allen, who replaced Hue Jackson, who was fired one week after the 2011 season ended. It was also the first full season without the ownership of longtime owner Al Davis, who died on October 8, 2011, and the first season with a non-Davis family member as the general manager since 1972, as Reggie McKenzie was hired from the Green Bay Packers' organization by Al Davis' son Mark on January 10 to be the general manager of the team, and was given full autonomy over the football operations. McKenzie fired Jackson on his first day and hired Allen 2 weeks later. The Raiders failed to improve on their 8–8 record in 2011, securing them into their tenth consecutive non-winning season and the tenth consecutive elimination from postseason contention. The Raiders also clinched their divisional rank, securing their fifth consecutive season since 2007 which they finished third or fourth. This was also the first time since the 2009 NFL season that the team finished with a record below 8-8. The team did however upset the Pittsburgh Steelers, whom they also defeated in the 2006 NFL season, when the Raiders finished the year 2–14 and claimed the first overall pick in the draft.

Anthony Scott Dye is a former American football free safety. He played college football at UCLA. He was signed by the Cincinnati Bengals as an undrafted free agent in 2012, coming off a broken neck at UCLA. After missing the entire 2012 season due to ankle surgery, Dye was activated against the Cleveland Browns the following year, scoring a touchdown for Cincinnati on a 24-yard return of a blocked punt in his NFL debut.

Jim O'Neil is an American football coach who currently is the defensive assistant for the Detroit Lions. Previously he was the defensive coordinator at Northwestern University and as assistant coach in the NFL for the New York Jets, Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, the San Francisco 49ers and Las Vegas Raiders. He was a coach for numerous college football teams before that.

Joe Woods is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints of the National Football League (NFL). A coaching veteran of 26 years, Woods has previously served as an assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers, Denver Broncos, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as well as defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns.

Eric Sanders is an American football coach who is the defensive coordinator for the Eastern Washington Eagles. Previously he was the inside linebackers coach for Stanford and a defensive assistant for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL). Sanders was on the Oakland Raiders coaching staff when Hue Jackson was the head coach. He worked as a student with the UC Davis football program before graduating in 2005 with a degree in psychology with a biological emphasis.

Chris Kiffin is an American football coach who is the linebackers coach for the Houston Texans of the National Football League (NFL). He previously served as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He also coached at Florida Atlantic, Ole Miss, Arkansas State, USC, Nebraska and Idaho.
