Judith Wyder (born 25 June 1988) is a Swiss orienteering and ski orienteering competitor and runner. Her achievements include gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships and the European Orienteering Championships, both individually and with the Swiss relay team.
As a junior, Wyder won World Championship medals in both orienteering [1] and ski orienteering.
She won a bronze medal in the middle distance at the 2011 World Orienteering Championships in Chambéry, a gold medal in the relay at the 2012 World Orienteering Championships in Lausanne and a bronze medal in the relay at the 2013 World Orienteering Championships in Vuokatti.
Wyder had a very strong start to the 2014 season, becoming the dominant Swiss female orienteer after the retirement of Simone Niggli. She dominated the European Orienteering Championships in Portugal where she won gold in both the sprint and in the long distance. She also won the World Cup sprint race ahead of WOC in Italy – a very technical sprint in Imatra, Finland. After that she achieved three gold medals and a bronze medal in the 2014 World Orienteering Championships in Asiago-Lavarone showing her incredible talent. [2]
In 2017, she took a break from competing in Orienteering in order to have her first child. [3]
In 2018, Wyder won a bronze medal in the sprint distance [4] and a silver medal in the sprint relay [5] at the 2018 World Orienteering Championship in Riga.
Wyder began to focus on trail running and skyrunning in 2019. She set a new course record at the DoloMyths Run, [6] finished second at Sierre-Zinal [7] and won the Ring of Steall Skyrace, also in a course record. [8] She then won the Annapurna Trail Marathon which gave her the overall women's victory in the Golden Trail World Series. [9]
Following the 2019 season, pregnant with her second child, Wyder suffered a stroke on Christmas Day following severe headaches. Wyder returned to training following the birth of her second child in June 2020, but has a permanent spot on her right eye where she is unable to see, which has affected her map-reading for orienteering, and has memory problems which were not previously present. She won silver (individual and team) in the Trail Short during the IAU Trail World Championships 2023. [11]
Simone Niggli-Luder is a Swiss orienteering athlete who has twice won all four women's competitions at the world championships. She is widely seen as one of the greatest orienteers of all time.
Marie-Luce Romanens is a Swiss orienteering competitor and long-distance runner. She won the 1995 Short distance World Orienteering Championships. This was the first individual Swiss gold medal in the World Orienteering Championships. She also earned a silver medal in the 2003 Sprint Championships, and a Relay bronze medal from the 1997 World Championships.
Daniel Hubmann is a Swiss orienteering competitor. Hubmann is the most successful male Swiss orienteer of all time, with 9 Gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships. In 2023, with his victory in the relay at the 2023 World Orienteering Championships, Hubmann became the oldest competitor to win a gold medal at the World Orienteering Championships, at the age of 40 years and 61 days. Hubmann is currently the third most successful male orienteer of all time, behind Thierry Gueorgiou and Olav Lundanes, and has won more medals in total than any other male orienteer.
Olav Lundanes is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, hailing from Ålesund. He has won gold medal at the World Orienteering Championships ten times and the European Orienteering Championships four times. He competes for Halden SK.
Magne Dæhli is a Norwegian orienteering competitor, ski-orienteer, and cross-country skier. His achievements include five medals in the relay at the World Orienteering Championships, of which three are gold medals. His best individual performances include a silver medal in the long distance from the European Orienteering Championships, and a bronze medal in the middle distance from the 2019 World Orienteering Championships.
Maja Møller Alm is a Danish orienteering and Athletics competitor who has won seven World Championships and two World Games titles. She is especially known for her four gold medals on the sprint distance, where she has won the title four years in a row: 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018. She is also a medalist from the Junior World Championships. Since 2006 she has been coached by Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. Alm is remarkable for her dominant running speed, which gives her a great advantage over other competitors at the sprint distance.
Christine Schaffner is a Swiss mountain bike orienteer and world champion. She has participated in all seven World MTB Orienteering Championships from 2004 to 2010, and won gold medals in the long distance four times, in 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
Adrian Jackson is an Australian mountain bike orienteering competitor and World Champion. He has won individual gold medals at the 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010 World MTB Orienteering Championships.
Ida Bobach is a Danish orienteering competitor who was Junior World Champion in 2009, and became triple Junior World Champion from 2010, when she won the sprint, long distance and the relay. She represents the club OK Pan Århus, and since 2007, has received training from Danish national coach Lars Lindstrøm. In 2015 she won gold medals at the World Championships in the long and Relay.
Tove Alexandersson is a Swedish foot orienteer, ski orienteer, skyrunner, trail runner, ski mountaineer and skysnow runner. Alexandersson has won gold medals at world championships in five different sports plus a silver medal in a sixth sport, and has won a total of 21 gold medals at the World Orienteering Championships, making her the second most successful orienteer in history by number of gold medals at World Championships, behind Simone Niggli-Luder. Alexandersson holds the record for the number of gold medals in a row at the World Orienteering Championships, winning 11 in a row between 2018 and 2022.
Matthias Kyburz is a Swiss competitor in orienteering and athletics. In orienteering, Kyburz has attained gold medals in the Junior World Orienteering Championships, European Orienteering Championships and the World Orienteering Championships. In athletics, Kyburz is a long-distance specialist; Kyburz attained the world record in 50 km on a treadmill of 2:56:35 on 16 April 2020, breaking a record held by Florian Neuschwander. On 7 April 2024 Kyburz ran 2:07:44 in his Marathon debut, becoming the third fastest Swiss athlete of all time over the distance after Tadesse Abraham and his coach Viktor Röthlin, and achieving the qualifying standard for the 2024 Olympic Games. In the Olympic Marathon, Kyburz finished in 30th place.
Natalia Mikhailovna Gemperle is a Russian-born Swiss orienteering competitor. She competes for the clubs Alfta-Ösa and OLK Aargus
Florian Howald is a Swiss orienteering competitor. At the 2016 World Orienteering Championships in Strömstad he won a silver medal in mixed sprint relay with the Swiss team, along with Rahel Friederich, Martin Hubmann and Judith Wyder.
