The West Central Railway, one of the 19 zones of the Indian Railways, came into existence on 1 April 2003. It is headquartered at Jabalpur. It was created by taking away two divisions namely Bhopal division and Jabalpur division from central railways and one division namely Kota division from western railway. The WCR zone provides rail route coverage to the west central region of India. Most of its route is in the states of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan with a very little portion in the state of Uttar Pradesh.

Rail transport in Madhya Pradesh began in the year 1867 when Allahabad–Jabalpur branch line was opened in June 1867. The Etarsi to Jabalpur section was opened on 7 March 1870 by GIPR, linking up with EIR track at Jabalpur from Allahabad, and establishing connectivity between Mumbai and Kolkata. In 1903, with the introduction of Delhi-Chennai rail route through the state and Bhopal Junction railway station, the state got a good rail connectivity. Presently major portion of the state's rail connectivity is provided by the railway zone called West Central Railway.

Balaghat Junction is situated on the Jabalpur–Nainpur–Gondia section of South East Central Railway, in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Rail routes through the junction include routes towards Jabalpur, Gondia, Katangi on the Satpura Railway. The "10001 Satpura Express", a narrow-gauge train, was started in 1901 by the British Government and completed 100 years of service in 2001. This train used to hold the unique distinction of operating first-class service on narrow-gauge track; it was the world's fastest narrow-gauge train.

The Jabalpur Metro, also known as Jabalpur Metro Rail, is a rapid transit system proposed for the city of Jabalpur in Jabalpur Metropolitan Region in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The project was announced by state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on 13 March 2014. The Chief Minister has again declared in a meeting at Jabalpur on 27 September 2023 that Jabalpur will get Metro Railway.The feasibility of this project was being questioned through a study. The work for the feasibility report has been completed in December 2017 and report was released in January 2018.
