The 12011/12012 Kalka Shatabdi Express is a Superfast Express train of Shatabdi class belonging to Indian Railways that runs between New Delhi and Kalka in India. It is a daily service. It operates as train number 12011 from New Delhi railway station to Kalka railway station and as train number 12012 in the reverse direction. [1] The train is mostly used by tourists, along with Netaji Express, en route to Shimla. Thus, gaining its international patronage.
It is the fastest train on the Delhi–Kalka sector. It shares this distinction with its sister train 12005/06 Kalka Shatabdi Express. It covers the distance of 269 kilometers in 4 hours as 12011 Shatabdi Express (67 km/h) and 4 hours 5 mins as 12012 Shatabdi Express (66 km/h).
It is regularly hauled by a WAP-7 locomotive with HOG capability from the Ghaziabad Shed. It receives banker engines between Chandigarh & Kalka. Generally, these are WAP-4 or WAP-5.
Shatabdi Express are a series of fast passenger trains operated by Indian Railways. Shatabdi Express are day trains and mostly return to their origin station the same day. The trains run at a maximum permissible speed of 110–150 km/h (68–93 mph) with the Rani Kamalapati–New Delhi Shatabdi Express achieving the maximum permissible speed of 150 km/h (93 mph) between Tughlakabad and Bilochpura Agra.
The Taj Express was started in 1964 to serve tourists traveling from Delhi to Agra. It reduced the traveling time from over three hours to around two and a half hours. Taj Express was started along the lines of Deccan Queen- which ran as a high-speed commuter-special train between Pune Junction and CSMT Mumbai – and provided a quick and comfortable journey between Agra and Delhi. It was a very popular train especially among foreign tourists, before the Bhopal Shatabdi was introduced in 1988. The train was later extended up to Gwalior in 1985 and then to Jhansi in 2006. It was named after Taj Mahal.
