The miniKORG 700 is a monophonic analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1973, marking their entry into mass-produced synthesizers and their first monophonic synthesizer. [2] [3] It was initially designed to be placed on top of an organ, so its controls are located below the keyboard facing towards the performer. An updated model, the miniKORG 700S, was launched in 1974, introducing a second oscillator that could be detuned, along with additional sustain and vibrato controls. [2]
In the early 1970s, Korg, then known as Keio Giken Kogyo Inc. and recognized for its rhythm machines, started development of a new electric organ, led by engineer Fumio Mieda. This led to the creation of a dual-manual organ that was based on analog synthesis elements rather than traditional tonewheel or transistor organ technologies, and was briefly marketed in 1973 under the name Korg, from the words "Keio Organ". Korg's owner, Tsutomu Katoh, recognized the potential of Mieda's organ prototype as a synthesizer in Japan's untapped market, which lacked any domestic synthesizer manufacturers at the time. This prototype was refined into the more compact, monophonic miniKORG 700, marketed in the USA by Univox as the Univox MiniKORG K-1. [4] [5] With a launch price of $995, the miniKORG was the first synthesizer to be priced below $1,000, setting it up as a competitive option against the ARP 2600, priced at $1,995, and the Minimoog, which cost $1,500. [6] [7]
The miniKORG 700 was designed with organists in mind and features a layout where controls are organized and spaced for tactile use. Controls are distinguished by colour coding, with loudness-related controls in orange, pitch controls in blue, tonal character in red, auto-retriggering in yellow and portamento in green. [5]
The 700's oscillator provides five waveforms: sine, square, sawtooth, and two pulse-width modulation waveforms named Chorus I and II, which create rich, swirling sounds. [4] Its envelope features an attack setting and a unique 'singing' control, which together serve as attack and decay stages from a traditional envelope generator. Additionally, a toggle labelled 'sustain' functions as a release control, with its duration set by the level of the singing control. [8]
The 'Traveler' control combines dual 12dB/oct low-pass and high-pass filters, designed so the low-pass filter cannot surpass the high-pass, preventing a configuration that would result in silence. These filters were capable of producing a vocal-like sound. [5] [8] An 'expand' toggle controls the amount the envelope modulates the filter's cutoff frequency, and a 'bright' toggle adds a preset amount of filter resonance. Other features include 'bender' for a pitch glide effect from below to the played note, 'repeat' for performing trills, a vibrato with adjustable depth, rate, and delay, and variable-rate portamento for sliding between notes. In 1974, Korg introduced the miniKORG 700S, an enhanced version of the original model with a secondary control panel named the 'Effects Section,' alongside an additional oscillator that could be tuned independently. The 700S also added white and pink noise generators, filter modulation termed 'travel vibrato', and a 'sustain long' option that greatly extended the envelope time. The effects section introduced three ring modulation modes, two of which followed the keyboard's notes for consistent timbres, while the third mode offered varied timbres for each key pressed. [5] [8] The 700S variant is the more recognized model to this day. [9] The 700S was used in 1978 by Daniel Miller to record Warm Leatherette. [10]
In 2021, Korg released the miniKORG 700FS, a modern reissue designed in collaboration with Fumio Mieda, the original creator. The 700FS version maintains dual oscillators from the 700S version and introduces a spring reverb effect and a joystick for pitchbend and modulation. Other new features include aftertouch, an arpeggiator, USB port, MIDI IN, a CV/Gate In jack as well as a memory button for saving patches. [3] [9] [11]
In 2022, Korg released a software emulator of the miniKORG 700S as part of their Korg Collection 3 plugin suite. The emulator offers enhanced performance controls, an arpeggiator, an extensive modulation matrix with new LFOs and ADSR generators, and a versatile effects board featuring six virtual stompbox effects. The Korg Poly-800 is an 8-voice analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1983. Its initial list price of $795 made it the first fully programmable polyphonic synthesizer that sold for less than $1,000. It was designed for portability, featuring battery power and a lightweight design that allowed the user to play with it strapped around their neck. It utilized digitally controlled oscillators (DCOs), and was a paraphonic synth with a single filter shared between its eight voices.

The Roland Jupiter-4 (JP-4) was an analog synthesizer manufactured by the Roland Corporation between 1978 and 1981. It was notable as the company's first self-contained polyphonic synthesizer, and for employing digital control of analog circuits, allowing for such features as programmable memory, voice assignment modes, an arpeggiator, polyphonic portamento and others.
The Korg MS-20 is a patchable semi-modular monophonic analog synthesizer which Korg released in 1978 and which was in production until 1983. It was part of Korg's MS series of instruments, which also included the single oscillator MS-10, the keyboardless MS-50 module, the SQ-10 sequencer, and the VC-10 Vocoder. Additional devices included the MS-01 Foot Controller, MS-02 Interface, MS-03 Signal Processor, and MS-04 Modulation Pedal.
The Korg DW-8000 is a polyphonic hybrid digital-analog synthesizer released in 1985. It blends digital waveforms with an analog filter and amplifier, followed by a digital delay for adding echo effects. It boasts eight-note polyphony and its keyboard is equipped with velocity sensitivity and aftertouch.
The Korg Prophecy is a monophonic synthesizer released by Korg in 1995. one of the earliest commercial DSP physical/acoustic and analog "virtual" modeling sound synthesizers and Korg's first monophonic synthesizer since the Mono/Poly. The Prophecy employs Korg's Multi Oscillator Synthesis System (MOSS), which features digital oscillators capable of emulating synthesis techniques such as analog synthesis, FM and physical modelling. Emphasized for its portability, expressiveness, and engaging playability, a distinctive feature of the Prophecy is its multifunctional Wheel 3, nicknamed the 'log'.
The Korg Poly-61(PS-61) is an analog synthesizer manufactured by Korg between 1982 and 1986. It was the first affordable synthesizer to feature two oscillators per voice, and was Korg's first synthesizer to feature digitally-controlled analog oscillators (DCOs). The Poly-61 marked a significant departure in design philosophy from previous Korg synthesizers by replacing the traditional array of dedicated control knobs on the front panel with a digital interface that required users to select parameters individually for adjustment.
The Korg Polysix(PS-6) is a six-voice polyphonic analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1981. It was one of the first affordable polyphonic synthesizers on the market, and was released as a cheaper alternative to the Sequential Prophet-5 and Oberheim OB-X, priced at approximately a third of the cost of its contemporaries in the polysynth market. It includes one VCO per voice, enhanced by a chorus/ensemble effect for added richness. It also comes equipped with 32 program memories and an integrated arpeggiator.
The Korg DSS-1 is a polyphonic sampling synthesizer released by Korg in 1986. As Korg's initial entry into the sampling market, the DSS-1 combines sampling, additive synthesis, and waveform drawing with an analog signal path. The DSS-1 was released a time when major synthesizer manufacturers like Yamaha and Casio were beginning to explore sampling, an area of sound design dominated by companies like Fairlight, E-mu, and Ensoniq. Korg did not stay long in the sampling arena; the DSS-1 was the company's only sampler until 1998 when Korg introduced sampling options on their Triton and Trinity series of workstations.
The Korg DS-8 is a digital eight-voice FM synthesizer released by Korg in 1987. Following an agreement with Yamaha for access to its research and development facilities, it was designed using Yamaha components and constructed under a licensing agreement. It introduced an analog-style interface for controlling FM sounds and could play different patches on each of its eight voices, marking it as Korg's first multi-timbral MIDI synthesizer. Accompanying its launch was the Korg 707, a more portable version of the DS-8, lacking digital effects but equipped with strap pegs for keytar performance.
The Korg Mono/Poly (MP-4) is a paraphonic analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1981, bridging the gap between monophonic and polyphonic synthesis. Released in the same year as the Korg Polysix, as a complementary synth, The Mono/Poly is equipped with four VCOs and can operate as a four-voice paraphonic synth with limited capabilities, or as a monophonic synth using all four oscillators. The Korg PS-3300 is a polyphonic analog synthesizer released by Korg in 1977. It was released alongside the PS-3100, a more compact variant featuring a complete synthesizer voice board for each of its 48 keyboard notes. The PS-3300 essentially combines three PS-3100 units, triggering all voices simultaneously with each key press and mirroring the PS-3100's overall design, featuring a total of 144 synth voices. The PS-3300 uses the PS-3010, a detachable keyboard equipped with an assignable joystick called the X-Y Manipulator.
The AX60 is a polyphonic analogue keyboard synthesizer manufactured by Akai Professional in the mid-1980s. It was Akai's answer to the popular Roland Juno series synthesizers. The AX60 uses voltage-controlled analogue oscillators and filter circuitry based on the Curtis Electronics CEM 3394 integrated circuit.

The Z1 built upon the foundation set by the monophonic Prophecy released two years prior by offering 12-note polyphony and featuring expanded oscillator options, a polyphonic arpeggiator and an XY touchpad for enhanced performance interaction. It was the world's first multitimbral physical modelling synthesizer.

The Korg Minilogue is a polyphonic analog synthesizer released in 2016 by Korg. It offers users four-voice polyphony with two analog VCOs per-voice and was designed to be affordable. It was designed by Korg engineer and synthesizer designer Tatsuya Takahashi, who said "the concept of the Minilogue was to build an analog synthesizer that doesn't rely on the fame and success of an old synth".

The Korg Collection is a suite of virtual instruments and effects that emulate Korg's various hardware synthesizers. The original release included virtual versions of the MS-20, Polysix and Wavestation. Subsequent additions have expanded the collection to feature emulations of the Mono/Poly, M1, ARP Odyssey, Triton, miniKORG 700S, Prophecy and microKORG. The Volca Keys is an analogue synthesizer manufactured by the Japanese music technology company Korg. It was announced in April 2013 at MusikMesse and was at the time one of the few affordable analogue synthesizers available. The Volca Keys uses subtractive synthesis to create sounds and is three-note paraphonic, meaning that it can play chords with all voices sharing a single voltage-controlled filter (VCF).
